Tore Jonsen Grue, born 1778 on Gruva, d 1835, married Kari Embretsdatter, born 1789 in Tufsingdalen, Nordre Haugen [88-4], died 1885 at Tufsingdalen. Welfare receiptant [Legdslem] on Østre Bakken in 1865
- 1865 Norway Census has Kari Embretsdtr, age 76, as Legdslem on the farm Østre Bakken; head of household is Esten Olsen
-- note that none of the others in the household appear to be a relative;
Notes:
- Tore died in 1835, so she lived another 50 years after he died (she died in 1885 at 95 years old); it appears that Tore and Kari did not have or own land
- it's not clear where or how Kari lived after Tore died from 1835 to 1865, a period of 30 years
- by 1865 Simen and John and possibly Kjersti were in the Røros area; Karen and Gjartrud were in the Rendalen area; Ann-Margaret was; HOWEVER, the others were in the Os area
-- so WHY was it she became known as "Legdslem" in 1865 ---- I'm not clear on the actual meaning of Legdslem at that time - perhaps it was used to describe the care of someone for no charge or renumeration OR someone who can't care for themselves by working
- But still -- it was most common that an older parent lived and was supported by one the children, usually the oldest --- so why not in this case ?????
