Ancestors of Rueben D Grue


Welcome to the website dedicated to my parents, Oliver and Mary Grue. My database follows my four lines of ancestry. The Grue, Skaret, Lofgren, and Naslund families originated from Norway and Sweden with my Grue 2nd great grandparents emigrating to Minnesota in 1868, and then in 1894 to the Armena district in Alberta, Canada. My Skaret great grandfather emigrated in 1892 to North Dakota, and then in 1901 to the Armena district. My Lofgren and Naslund grandparents, Jonas and Anna Lofgren (nee Naslund), came from Vilhelmina, Sweden to the Hay Lakes, Alberta area in 1912.

CAUTION: Both Norway and Sweden used a patronymic naming system (“efternamn” in Swedish). Fixed surnames were relatively uncommon until around the middle 1800’s. At times researching ancestors in Norway and Sweden can be confusing due to the patronymic naming system. And sometimes further confusion is created since many of our relatives changed the spelling of their names when they came to North America, and in some cases used completely different surnames.

NOTES: On an individual’s page, there is a section titled “Research Notes”. The amount and type of information in the research note sections varies from person to person and may at times have some conflicting information, further research questions, and in the last year of so, I have tried to write a ‘summary’ for an indivial/family. I have also often written a ‘modified chronological’ list.

Genealogy is ongoing. It has been some time since I last updated the website, but I have continued to research, numerous family ancestors in Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, as well as families in the United States (mostly Minnesota, North and South Dakota and Washington), Norway and Sweden. In the last year I have concentrated on relations in Røros parish, Trysil parish, Engerdal parish and Rendal parish.
