The two parishes Särna and Idre were originally part of Norway but were occupied by an expedition of Swedish peasants from Älvdalen in 1644. In 1971 the three municipalities Särna, Idre (which itself had been split off from Särna in 1916) and Älvdalen were amalgamated to form the present municipality of Älvdalen.

Family history from Särnaheden (see below for notes)

A May day in 1859 drowned with horse on the Hedefjord at Heden Trång Jo Jonsson (born 1807) [d. Ä.] from Trånggården in Heden and his second wife, Kersta Toresdotter from Norway. They left 6 underage children in scarce circumstances, the last 2 were twins and only 3 years old.

For the children's upkeep it was common in the communities for those who were financially better off would help and assists others. It was an unwritten law, but an old moral order in such situations. For those living today, we have reason for quiet reflection to compare the future opportunities for contemporay large families. Then you realize perhaps better what circumstances were for a poor, orphaned minor brood must have been presented with.

Their parents had been over the lake by horse and on the other side they picked moss and birch (björkris, leaves or foliage but possibly birchbark or twigs) for feed for the cattle, since there was a feed shortage. On their return they came too close to the strong current (rapids) and drowned. Emergency calls were heard from the drowning, by the nearest neighbors, but no one appeared in time to their rescue.

Trånggården stood about 100 meters north of the present Klittgården in Heden. It was later sold and moved to another place within the village.

The future of the children, all of whom lived to an old age, told by Busk Jonas Jönsson in Särnaheden: The son Tobias moved to the village of Sörberget in Särna, eventually married and lived there. The son Emret moved to the village Gördalen i Särna, later married and moved to the village Linnäs on the other side the national border at Gördalen. The son Johan came to Sjögården, Heden, married a wife from Norway, and remained there [Sjögården]. The daughter Karin moved to Gördalen, returned to her hometown after about 40 years and died unmarried at Särna in an old age home. The twin brother Jo (Jon) first came to Holsgården in Särna, then to the Pingstegården in Östanomsjön, where he later married. The twin sister Sigrid came to Dammgården in Heden, where she grew up, later married with Jomo Jo Olsson in Heden. In addition, Jo Jonsson Trång's older son from his first marriage went by the name of Jo Lill Trång [Jo, little Trång] and was self-sufficent.

Jon Jonsson and Kersta Toresdotter (born 1816 in Norway) had 6 children. This documents says that the twins (Jon and Sigrid) were 3 years old, but in fact they were only about 2 weeks old when Kersta Toresdotter died.

The other children of Jon Jonsson (born 1807) and Kersta Toresdotter are living in the same place. By the time of the next volume, (AI:7, 1870-1880), Kersta's children are at various places with the exception of her son, Johan Jonsson (born 1849) living on the homeplace in Heden.

Biographical Sketch: 29 Nov 2017

Biographical Sketch: Kirsti Thoresdatter Grue (1816-1856)

Written by Rueben D Grue, 29 Nov 2016 ©2017, All rights reserved

Kirsti Thoresdatter Grue was a sister to my second great grandfather, Simon Thoresen Grue (1823-1903). She was born on Gruva farm, in Tolga Parish, Hedemark, Norway on 12 Feb 1816, the third child (of 14 children) of Thore Jonsen Grue and Kari Broen (Broplass). Kirsti's family moved a number of times while she was young with the last recorded farm as Norgaard (possibly Nergaard) when she was confirmed on 17 Jun 1932.

She is recorded as leaving Tolga parish on 4 Jun 1845 for Røros parish. However, the Røros parish records do not record her coming into Røros, nor is she recorded as leaving Røros parish. Three sources note that she had left Norway for Sweden (see my Legacy data for actual source citations). Klokkervang by Thoralf Grue notes that she "married and moved to Sweden". The Bygebok for Os says that she left Tolga for Røros parish in 1845. And, the Sweden Church records note that she had moved into Särna parish Kopparberg län on 14 Apr 1846 and moved to the village or locality of Heden. She subsequently is married to Jon Jonsson (Trång) on 2 Nov 1846. They lived at the farm known as Trånggården (I have not been able to find on a map the actual location of this farm in Heden).

Jon Jonsson and Kirsti Thoresdatter had 6 children (Jon Jonsson had 3 children with his first wife who had died in 1843). As with most people at this time and in most places in Särna parish in Sweden, life would have been quite hard and difficult. They likely had a small root vegetable garden, maybe had a horse, a cow or two, maybe some chickens, possibly a hog, and likley some sheep. Most of the time was likely spent trying to clear some of land of trees and shrubs, working at improving the land and maybe harvesting small crops. Of course, time was also spent hunting and fishing. I'm not sure of social gatherings, but there likely was some visiting with neighbors. There likely was some church activities locally, but they would have had to travel to Särna (a distance of about 10 kms/7 miles) for church, and this was likely at least a couple hours away on foot over a forest trail, so they may not have gone to the church often.

Through a general search, I came across a post of a short article from the Mora newspaper in 1951, "Family history from Särnaheden (written by Busk Jonas Jönsson; see Legacy data for a basic translation of this article). Reviewing the Sweden Church records, I have noted that there are some errors in this article.

In late Mar 1856, Jon Jonsson and Kirsti Thoresdatter had been across the lake Särnsjön (or Hedefjorden). It is possible that some of the older children had also gone with them. This was actually a widening of the river Störån that at places was at least 200 meters in width. They had gone over to the other side to gather moss and birch (björkris, leaves or foliage but possibly birchbark or twigs) for feed for the cattle, since there was a feed shortage. When they were returning, near rapids they had fallen into the river/lake and according to the article they were drowned. In the later part of March it would seem that the lake or river would have been frozen, but with this being a river, likely a current was flowing under the ice resulting in various thickness of the ice. However, using the Swedish "Kartoran" map there appears to be a narrowing a couple of kilometers or so north of the current village of Heden - it is possible that this is the location of the rapids noted in the newspaper article? And another question or possibility is that over the years the widening of the river may have been due to partial dams or locks that were built, and in the mid-1800's, there may have been a much more defined river channel.

The newspaper article notes that "they were drowned". The Sweden church records record Kirsti's death as 21 Mar 1856. This date is according to the death/burial records, but 25 Mar in noted in the Husförhör or household book. It is not clear if she died the day her and her husband came back from gathering foliage. Jon Jonsson's death is recorded as 13 Sept 1857, about 1.5 years after Kirsti's death; it is possible that Jon's death was related to injuries on the date of the drowning of Kirsti. The newspaper article implies that both Kirsti and Jon were drowned on the same day, since "emergency calls or screams were heard from the drowning, by the nearest neighbors, but no one appeared in time to their rescue." This is not likely the case, although the story may be only referring to Kirsti's drowning and over the years, it evolved to include both Jon and Kirsti.

Jon and Kirsti had 6 children. The oldest was Emret (or Embret) who was 9 years old when his mother died. The youngest children were twins (born 1856), Jon and Sigrid '96 they were only about 3 weeks old when their mother died. Sweden Church records show that after Jon Jonsson (born 1807) died in 1857, all of the children were living at the home place at Heden with Jon's oldest son (Jon Jonsson born 1833) and his wife. By 1899, Jon Jonsson and Kirsti's children had moved to various places/farms throughout Särna parish. You can view their families and descendants by following my Legacy data or viewing my genealogy web page at www.tree.grue.ca .

Further research regarding about Kirsti Thoresdatter Grue would included researching more information on her death, although it is unlikely more information could found. Perhaps a local history of the area may provide more information about the life of the Heden area.
