bullet  Research Notes:

NOTE [ 5 Jun 2020 ]:

Per Halstensson is often recorded in the the records in the US as Peter Halstenson. Some of his children in the US "adopted" a family surname of "Hanson", but I am not sure of a reason or how this surname came to be used.

I have used a few Family Trees on Ancestry as a starting point for research (see point 3). However, these trees are not always complete and can be confusing at times. With the hints from these FTs, I have been able to expand some information that are not recorded on the FTs - this information is most likely correct, but there are some gaps - further research is needed.

I have mostly used Brodin Ostlund FT (although at times it is confusing) and secondarily Benson Famly FT (some of it's information does not seem to correspond to other information. I have reviewed Manuel Aguilar Hendriksson FT on FamilySearch; however, he does not follow Per Halstensson family in the US (see point 1).

Another family Tree is useful for some of his descendants: Jones FT - see below.... ....
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[3 Oct 2021]

Ancestry has close to 100 Family Trees (FTs) for Per Halstensson. Many do not record a date of death. Those that do record a death date, record his death as Jan 1905, BUT do not record any source citations, other than referencing other FTs with no source information. On 3 Oct 2021, I reviewed all of these FTs hoping for a source for his date of death - nothing. Some of these FTs also record the wrong date of death for his 2nd wife, Karin Nilsdotter. They record her death as 1917, but that is not correct - see reseach notes for Karin Olofsdotter, 1823-1917 - she was the mother of Jon M Andersson and Johan Aron Andersson (see Johan Aron's research notes).

There is one Ancestry FT that references the death of Per Halstenson (b 1823): Whole Family FT [Jessica Cieslinksi]; access 30 Sep 2021
https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/86565221/person/410247161633/facts

On this FT, click on his son Nils H Hanson (should be recorded as Nils Uranus Hanson, 1864-1902), and this page has a reference to Ancestry's collection, U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007. Clicking on this link, Ancestry provides a number of other possible "hints" - the first one references a "Findagrave" post of Nels Uranius Hanson (id, 222175531).

Clicking on this findagrave post, Nels Uranius Hanson's burial is linked to his father, "Pere Halstensson (id, 214033666), buried at Riverside Cemetery, Eddy Co, ND with his birth as 14 May 1823 in Sweden and death, Jan 1905, at Sheyenne, Eddy Co, ND. "Pere" Halstenson Hanson post also has some notes: "Pere was born in Sweden to parents Person Halstensson and Stina Johnsdatter. He married Ingeborg Jonsdatter on 22 Oct 1844 in Ostmark, Sweden. She passed away and he remarried to Karin Nilsdatter on the 9 Dec 1860 in Sweden. The family immigrated to America in 1864, with their son, Nels Uranus Hanson being born on the journey over onboard ship. His children from his first marriage came along also. Pere changed his last name to Hanson. He might also have used Peter as his first name. His grave is assumed to be unmarked." This information above agrees with my information, other than the year 1905 - I have not found any direct or original record of his death. The note to this findagrave source is " 214033666, Jonelle Hvindin" and was added on 2 Aug 2020.

However, "Pere" Halstenson Hanson's post is also linked to his wife, Karin Halstenson [actually Karin/Carrie Nilsdotter] born in 1833 in Sweden. Karin's [id, 135009779] findagrave post, also has a brief note: "... married Pere Halstenson/Hanson on 9 Dec 1860 ... their first born [Nels Uranus] was born while crossing the ocean." This note was also made by Jonelle Hvindin, and added on 28 Aug 2014.

BUT, there are 2 problems with this findagrave post. [1.] Nels Uranus Hanson was "Pere" Halstenson and Karin Nilsdotter's 3rd child. The oldest was daughter Caroline Persdotter born in 1860 and traveled to MN with her parents. The 2nd child was Halsten Persson (b in 1862, but also died in 1862). [2.] The second problem with this post is that it records that Karin "Halstenson" died in 1917, but this is NOT correct. The person named Karin Halsten was actually, "Karin Olofsdotter" and she was the mother of Jon A Anderson and Johan M Anderson - she had remairred to Halsten Halstensson, b 1843 and they came to ND in 1900. When Karin Olofsdotter died in 1917, her husband returned to Sweden where he died [see Johan Aron Andersson research page and the information from the Sheyenne ND history book].

4 Oct 2021. I sent a message (through findagrave message) to Jonelle Hvinden
Jonelle replied:
It wasn't in the North Dakota Death Index directory. I have the Sheyenne History Book which has family histories. Perhaps it was in there. I am related to the wife of his son, Nels Uranus Hanson, whose name was Martha Hanson. I have a family history also about the Helland and Hanson family but don't know right off hand where my information came from. Sheyenne had a newspaper at that time and also there is a New Rockford, ND paper where obits can be accessed. Sorry not much info, Jonelle

7 Oct 2021. I sent a message (through findagrave message) to Jonelle Hvinden
"Hi. Thanks for getting back to me. If you do happen to find more information on his burial, please let me know.

I do have another comment on this. You have shown a link from "Pere" Halstensson Hanson to Karin Halstenson, 1833-1917 [id, 135009779]. Your comments note that she was the wife of "Pere" Halstensson Hanson. Your other comments correspondence to the information I have. However, my information is that Per Halstensson's (1823-1905?) second wife was Karin Nilsdotter born on 21 Aug 1837 in Sweden and according to the Östmark, Sweden parish records they were married 9 Dec 1860. They also had a son, Nils Uranus Hanson (b 1864) while they were traveling to North America. I think that Karin Nilsdotter died between 1885 and 1888 in MN since the Augustana and Grace Lutheran Church records note that Per Halstensson arrived in the Sheyenne area in 1888 and the church record does not include any other family members (Karin is recorded with Per in the 1885 MN State Census). But I have not found a funeral or burial record for Karin Nilsdotter.

The person you have indentied in the findagrave id (135009779) I believe was Karin Olofsdotter b 1833 in Östmark,
Sweden with her birth is confirmed in the Swedish Church records in Östmark parish. Karin Olofsdotter's second
marriage was with Halsten Halstenson (b 1843). Both Halsten and Karin Olofsdotter are recorded at Augustana and Grace Lutheran Church records on image 219. They came to the US in 1900. Karin Olofsdotter was the mother of Johan A Anderson (b 1872) and John M Anderson (b 1865). These 2 brothers emigrated in 1893 and came to Sheyenne, ND. Some of their "story" is noted in the book, "Our Heritage, 1883-1980, Sheyenne Area", Sheyenne Historical Society, 1980 (North Dakota) on page 222. On this page it mentions the arrival of their mother and step father in 1900, and it notes that their mother, Karin Halsteinson, died in 1917 [her husband returned to Sweden and died there]. Karin's death/burial is noted in Ancestry.com collection, North Dakota, U.S., Cemetery Records, 1877-1999, on image 517, 2nd col, 10th line - records the name, "Karin Halstinsson, 1833-1917". This corresponds to booklet "Cemeteries of North Dakota, Volume 11 (page 24) and with Riverside Cemetery on Sec 10. One other record [1900 US Federal Census, Eddy Co North Dakota, sheet 8B; image 7 on Ancestry] and notes that "Kari Halsteinson" (b 1833) is the mother the head of household, John [M] Anderson (b 1865).

Based on the above information, I think it is reasonable to conclude that the person, Karin Halstenson (1833-1917), and noted on the Findagrave id 135009779, was not married to "Pere" Halstensson Hanson and was not the mother of Nels Uranus Hanson (1864 - 1902).

If you have other information that disagrees with what I have outlined please let me know. Thanks. Rueben

Jonelle Hvinden's repsonse: Thanks for the information. Will get on it soon. Jonelle

[ *** 14 Feb 2023 - I reviewed the findagrave id, 1350009779: marriage to "Pere" .... she has not changed ... ]

Perhaps there is a record at Eddy County Recorders office that would confirm Per's death.

From Facebook post, I contacted. Date 14 Feb 2023 - his post was from 13 Feb 2023

Judah Zavalney. Hi. I have done research on his family in the United States and in Canada., about 3 years or so ago. I haven't done a lot since then. As indicated in other responses, Per Halstensson was married twice and had a number of children. If you want to look at my research, go to: tree.grue.ca. Click on the "surname" list at the bottom of the page and scroll to the surname "Halstensson" and then click - the last name is Per, b 1823. I have recorded the names of his children and by clicking on one of the children, you will find more information. However, I do not have much information on some of the children. I am distantly related to Per Halstensson (b 1823) on his mother's side to my 6th great-grandfather, Ivar Nilsson (1713-1787). Contact me if you have any questions.

**** Benson FT on Ancestry - says that Per Halstensson died 3 Dec 1901 at Fryksände parish, Sweden !! probably NOT the right person

NOTE; the family left Östmark on 28 Apr 1864 - so East Union is the first place in the US - and thus son, Nils may have been born in the US - East Union, Carver Co, MN. This would have to assume the voyage/travel from Östmark to North America and then traveling from a North American port (Quebec or eastern US port such as New York), was about 3 weeks [actually 19 days]. This seems very unlikely in 1864.

NOTE: I think that the East Carver church records, note Nils Uranus' birth as 17 May 1864 and baptized 19 May 1864, and this simply is a record of birth/baptism. The baptism noted was likely on board the ship .... and maybe the pastor had made a "formal" baptism when they arrived

However, I'm not sure of the meaning of "received" there are numerous people who were received - I'm wonder if it was the time Grace and Augustana combined and prior to this they were separate [Augustana was establish 1896]; no other family members are noted and because of this it is reasonable to assume that his wife, Karin Nilsdotter likely had died prior to 1904 [although the above 'Benson FT' notes that she died in 1917]*** ; deaths/funerals start in Jan 1911
- there is a 'one word' note on the far right column but it is difficult to make out the handwriting; almost seems to say "dead"; but if the word is dead, it is not clear when this occured, but either at or after being received. As I have noted a couple of FTs (Brodin... FT on ancestry) notes he died in Nov 1905, but no source is noted.)

* Karin Nilsdotter or Halstensson or Hallsten or Hanson is NOT named in the above church records for "funerals, 26 Oct 1910-1918"
(images 346 & 347) OR at Grandfield Lutheran Church funerals - 1910-1946 (image 58)

** daughter Ingeborg, born 24 Feb 1852 in Östmark; em 1864 with father and step-mother - see her research notes

*** this death is actually referencing to another person named "Karin Halstenson" and a link to findagrav for her with her birth in 1833 and death 1917. The Grace and Augustana Lutheran church records from Sheyenne (image 219) record her name as Karin Olsdotter b 7 Apr 1833 at Lekvattnet and married to Halsten Halstensson b 2 Jan 1843 [he is not a relation - his birth is recorded in the Östmark parish birth records (CI:3, page 189, 2nd side first entry) and his father was Halsten Ersson from Fäbacken]

6. US Land Records - Homestead and Track Books [ 26 Jun 2020 ]

Peter Halstensson, Eddy Co, ND; NE¼SW¼, Sec 3, Twp 150N, Range 66, 5 Meridian; patent issued 17 Mar 1892
- track book: Vol 73, image 74 (bottom of page)
- in fainter ink: Peder Hallstensson, 4-17 May 1889; 40 acres; darker ink: payment of $50.00 receipt on 2 Dec 1891 (#4180)
- below this, is NW SW, with ditto under name Peder Hallstensson, see.. ? "Vede, sec 4, HO 498" ??
- and then again, S½SW, with ditto under the name Peder Hallstensson, see .... Sec 10 [but nothing on Sec 10]

on SW¼ Sec 2, Twp 150N, Range 66, 5 Meridian: first recorded as Nels N Hanson with initial pay, 18 May 1889, but he cancelled; and then a final payment on 19 Dec 1891 by John Berglund [wife Tilda Hanson]. I'm not clear why his middle initial is 'N' since it should be 'U'. But note that this is the only reference I have found that likely links Nels Uranus Hanson to land in Eddy Co.

BUT on Sec 4 (image 75): is Hallsten O. Hallstensson [on GLO records, indexed as Hallsten O Hallstensen; homestead entry]
NW¼SW¼ Sec 3, N½SE¼ Sec 4 and Lot 6; Twp 150N, Range 66, 5 Meridian; 165.35 acres; paid $10, 9 Jul 1885
* son of Olaf Hallstensson [b 1838] and nephew to Per Halstensson, b 1823

AND then on the same page (Vol 75) and image 75: is Alfred Hanson
S½SE¼ sec 4 Twp 150N, Range 66 5 Meridian; paid $5, 26 Sep 1891;
* son of Per Halstensson, b 1823; and close to the same time as his father

A number of my relatives including Peder or Per Hallstensson, includes John P Hedman, John Berglund, Alfred John Hanson, Peter Hanson/Hallstenson and Hallsten O Hallstensson; Nels Uranus Hanson.

These parcels of land are all close to one another [including Sec 1 and 3 where John Hedman had land.
and that Olof Halstenson [b 1838] and Stina had land. Some of these quarters were taken over by John Aron Anderson and his wife Emilie, as well as the children of of Olof Halstenson.

---------------------------------------------

Peter Halstenson, Wright Co, MN; E½SE¼ Sec 14; Twp 118 N, Range 28 W; 80 acres; homesteady entry;
patent 17 Nov 1871
US Track Book: Minnesota, Vol 92, image 8
payment, $10 on 11 Jun 1866 (receipt 2385) and final 17 Nov 1871, with a note "add entry, Hed 22108, Dec 31-151-65. D La N.D." written above, F. C. 1035 (final certificate) 17 Nov 1871; then, "H. E. (or C.) 7942 - Devils Lake ND" -[no date is noted for this "note"]
- I don't know exactly what the "note" is referring to ...??; it seems to suggest that his land or possibly the other sections under the Eddy Co, ND notations from above were added to his land patent. BUT the numbers do not correspond and the patent from MN only includes the Wright Co MN; This "note" must have been added later, even as late as 1889, when he purchased the initial land in ND

- note: the US Census records do not include land description (sec, twp, range etc)

on Image 82 on Vol 73 (Eddy Co, ND) is the name Peter Halstens... (the last couple of letters are not visible; but the GLO records, Peter Halstenson)
E½SW¼ Sec 27, Twp 150N, Range 66, 5 Meridian; 80 acres: date of sale 3 Jul 1896 with final issue on 10 Jan 1901
- this is likely Peter Hanson, the son, b about 1866 in Cokato, MN; however, but it can't verfied, since the US Census records do not make note of land sections, etc. Peter Hanson is recorded in the 1910 US Census in Sheyenne Twp, Eddy Co, and so this is likely the land that he had first purchased from the US government in 1896
- Image 77: Peter Hanson SEofNE [80 acres], Sec 11; and SWofNW plus W½ofSW [80 acres] of Sec 12
: purchase, $200, on 5 Feb 1887 -- above this line in faint ink, Peder Halsten 20-25 Jul 1885

7. Ancestry.com Family Trees: Benson FT (other FT nothing much on children) - some information on his children:
- BUT note that many dates of death cannot be found in month year or location that is recorded

a. Nils Hanson b 14 May 1864 [ copied to his research notes, 5 Jun 2020 ]

1900 US Census; Two Harbors, Lake Co, MN; ED91; sheet 1A (ancestry), dw 8, fam 8, line 38 [ 40+ km north of Duluth ]

- no other census data
- notes that Nils had 5 sons and 2 daughters; FT records dates of birth and death, but no other descendant information

d. Thilda Hanson, b 1871 at Cokato, MN
- married to John Berglund, b 1866
- Canada Prairie Census, 1906 [Assiniboa East, sub dis 1, page 8, line 5; em 1902] ; and 1916 [ Qu'applle dis 26, sub 10; Rural Municipality of Wawken, p 9, dw 74 fam 78, line10; Thilda as head - husband maybe away ]
- findagrave id 110649550; Kennedy, SK - about 40+ km south of Whitewood, SK; there are other Berglund's and likely John Berglund born 1864 and died 1946

e. Christina (Stina) Margaret Halstensdotter (mother Ingeborg Jonsdotter); from Ancestry FT, Brodin.... - see her research notes

- but the FT is confusing: for example it records 3 different places for the 1900 US Census, but the records for Benson Co is likely more accurate

8. Per Halstensson's death - can't be verified. He is not recorded on the
North Dakota Cemetery Collection [ancestry], Section 10, Gates Township [Riverside Cemetery].
- Of course it is possible that he was buried at some other cemetery, but most of his related family record his death at Riverside 8859,8860,8861

bullet  Noted events in his life were:

1. Emigration - 1864: Leaving for North America, 26 Apr 1864, Östmark, Värmland län, Sweden. 8857,8862 Leaving Östmark parish for America, 26 Apr 1864. The Östmark moving out records notes his name, records that Per Halstensson is married and that 1 male and 5 females (Quinkön - Kvinnokön = female) traveling together: his wife Karin Nilsdotter, and daughters Kerstin (b 1849), Ingeborg (b 1852), Stina (b 1855) and Carolina (b 1860).

2. Death - uncertain, Between 1888 and 1905, Eddy Co, North Dakota, United States. Per Halstensson's (b 1823) is uncertain. I have not found any direct evidence of his death. The Augustana and Grace Lutheran Church records report that he had come to the Sheyenne, ND area by 1888 and confirmed by from the US Land Records (sale in 1889). The church record says that he was received by the church in 1904. This would imply that he was alive in 1904, but I'm not sure if this is correct - in the far right hand column something is written that looks like 'Dead' with no other information. Most of the Family Trees record his death as Jan 1905, but no sources are provided.

If he died in 1905, then he should be recorded in the 1900 US Census. But I have not found him recorded in the 1900 US Census in Eddy Co. Why? [post 26 Jun 2020]
