Brief Summary

Stina Persdotter was born in Östmark parish in Värmland, Sweden on 18 May 1855. In 1864, along with her father (Per Halstensson), her stepmother and siblings, she emigrated to America. By 1866, the family was living at Stockholm Twp in Wright Co, MN (south of the town of Cokato). Stina was married around 1874 to John Peterson Hedman (Jon Persson) who was born in 1851 Östmark parish. Around 1882, John Peterson Hedman, Stina and children left MN for North Dakota and lived in Benson Co in Oberon Twp (this area borders Sheyenne Twp, Eddy Co, ND where some other members of Stina's family had moved). From the US land records information, John and Stina had close to ¾ section of land - a cash entry and timber culture homestead and a pre-emption homestead across the Sheyenne River, and in Benson Co.

Stina and John Peterson Hedman had emigrated to Canada in 1902 and homesteaded in Saskatchewan in the south-east part of the province [around Kennedy, SK about 40 kms south of Whitewood]. Then around 1907-08, Stina, John and family moved to an area east of Enderby in BC. The community that they moved to was known at the time as Deep Creek, and it appears that they were ranching, with some crops. However, in Jul 1916 John Peterson Hedman died at the age 69. From what I have been able to research, Stina and her son Peter (he was not married) left BC in the fall of 1916. It is likely first went to area south of Mazenod, SK where Stina's daughter Lena (Carolina) was homesteading with her husband Daniel Warner. In the winter of 1916-1917 or in the spring of 1917, Stina and her son Peter had moved again to Sheyenne, North Dakota where her and her husband had also homesteaded for a few years earlier. However, I have not found Stina in the 1920 US Census or the 1921 Canada Census. BUT in the 1926 Census for Canadian Prairie Provinces, she is recorded with her unmarried sons (Peter and August), living in the Connaught Municipality, north of Tisdale, SK.

Stina died on 16 Mar 1931 according the ancestry FTs. She is likely buried at the Tisdale Cemetery (on the western side of the current town of Tisdale, SK) where some other family memebers are buried. However, she is not indexed on findagrave; nor are sons Peter and August.

- she posts a family photo that she labels as John Hedman family about 1893
- makes the following statement:
Applied for a homestead. This was the same block of land formerly homesteaded by their son William.

- But very little useful or new information

Actually, the Jones FT on ancestry has some information on Stina and her husband John Peterson Hedman.
Jones Family Tree [bagladytoo]; last accessed, 4 Oct 2021
https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/14961688/person/190157839/facts

Note: these FamilyTrees records dates etc. BUT it is very hard to find collaborating evidence or source information since often census data is not specific or even accurate (although the Jones FT has some evidence that can be collaborated).

For an unknown reason, Brodin ..FT records that Stina (Christina) was married to John P Hedman and they had one son named John William Hedman b 1874 in Wionna Co, MN (and died 3 Feb 1944 at Tisdale, SK, Canada). This FT then says she was also married to "unknown" and the rest of the children are recorded. The likely explanation is that the spelling of the family surname in the 1900 US census was "Headman" and maybe the FT was thinking this is a different person.

One major problem with these Family Trees is that both record that Christina and John P Hedman are recorded at least 3 different places in the 1900 US Census (Grant Co, South Dakota, but this has wife Christina b Nov 1861 in Sweden and emigrating in 1870; and another record for McPherson Co in Kansas and againg with wife Christina b June 1849 with immigration in 1870).
The third 1900 US Census is likely correct. This is for Oberon Twp, Benson Co, ND [this location borders the NW sections of Sheyenne Twp, Eddy Co); see below.

then, John Johnsson, uncle, b Jun 1835 in Sweden, age 75 em 1868, but marital status is obscure - 'automated genealogy" transcribed as a W for widow but ancestry transcribes as 'm' for married [ see Jon Jonsson's b 1835 research notes ]

NOTE: John Alfred Hanson b 1869 in MN (half-brother to Christina - John Hedman's wife) is recorded in the Lumby - Cherryville area in the 1911 Canada Census; John Alfred Hanson's youngest son was born Oct 1908 in BC - name is transcribed as Alph (Ralph?).

Thus, the family (and likely John P Hedman) came to BC around 1907 (1906-1908)

daughter Laura Hedman, born in 1895 but transcribed as 1904 but her age is given as 16, thus she would have been born 1895; as a domestic; 1911 Canada Census (BC, district 14-39 Okanagan; sub-district 1, ED 4, page 10 Spallumcheen - Armstrong

son Harold Hedman, b Feb 1893 age 18 b US; column for immigration to Canada - 1907, but the family actually emigrated in 1902 from the US, is this refering to when he came to BC ? ; 1911 Canada Census (BC, district 14-39 Okanagan; sub-district 1, ED 4, page 4, Spallumcheen - Armstrong, but in the residence column, Armstrong

Note that the Sheyenne River splits the two parcels of land: Eddy Co on the south side of the river and Benson Co on the north side and that some of the Benson Co land was or reverted at some point back to an Indian Reservation
