Summary:

Thilda June Hanson was my half-4th cousin 3 times removed. She was born on 23 Jun 1873 at Stockholm Twp in Wright Co, MN. Her parents were Per Halstensson (1823-1888/1905] and Kerstin Nilsdotter [1837-1885/1888]. Her parents had first come to MN in 1864 from Östmark parish in Sweden. Sometime between 1885 and 1889, Per and some of his children moved to Sheyenne, Eddy Co, ND. I think that Thilda's mother died between 1885 and 1888, although I have not found a death record. Per's family was living in Kandiyohi Co, MN in 1885.

On 12 Dec 1890, Thilda married John Erik Berglund in Sheyenne, Eddy Co, ND. John Berglund likely came to Eddy Co, ND as early as 1887, possibly a year or earlier or later. John had obtained a homestead in Eddy Co, about 2 kms - east of the town of Sheyenne. Tilda and John had 11 children all together, with one child dying as an infant. Six of their children were born in Eddy Co, ND. Likely in the spring of 1902, John and Tilda and their children left North Datoka to again homestead in the just east of the town of Kennedy, SK. In fact, John Berglund had bought a CPR ¼ [SE¼, sec 23, twp 12, range 4, W2nd] and likely had bought the NE¼ of section 24] - about 3kms west of the town of Kennedy on Twp Rd 124 [Bekeyer Rd] and Range Rd 2040. This area is about 160 kms east of Regina or about about 165 kms east and north of Weyburn.T ilda's brother, Alfred [John] Hanson had moved to this area around the same time - other relatives who had moved were the John P Hedman family and David Erickson.

Another 5 children were born at Kennedy, SK, with the youngest born in 1911.

John and Thilda's sons Walter, Willie [William] and Roland had gone to Alberta in the spring/summer of 1913. They all had obtained homesteads in the area just west of the hamlet of Hilda. Hilda is about 80 kms north of Medicine Hat. At some point, John Berglund also went to where his sons were - he is recorded in the Canada 1916 Census of the Prairie Provinces in this area. Tilda is recorded at town of Kennedy, SK in 1916, along with 8 children. For some reason, Willie/William was recorded in both AB and SK - he did join the military and had served during WW1.

From the available Canada census records [1916, 1921, 1926, and 1931] it is clear that Thilda lived in Kennedy, SK and that John lived just east of Hilda, AB. It is not clear if John lived in the the Hilda, AB area year round, and went back to Kennedy SK during the winter months.

As indicated above, Thilda and John, had 10 children that grew into adulthood. On my Legacy database I have not entered the names and dates of their children, or any of their grandchildren.

John Berglund on the same date since that was the date of John's first payment

7. From: "Grandma remembers", The Leader-Post [Regina, SK] issue 1 Feb 1949, page 2 [newspapers.com]

- took the family 14 weeks to cross the Atlantic [3.5 months]
- arrived at Quebec, Quebec - likely in later part of Aug [they left Östmark parish on 26 Apr 1864; 14 wks -10 Aug]
arrival at Quebec is probably correct
[ BUT note: Canada passenger lists start in 1865; from the Ships List, arrivals at Quebec in 1864 - in Aug, some of the ships are from Liverpool or Glascow; BUT there isn't a record of passengers for Quebec, 1864 on the Ships List;
through Hamburg ??? or Olso ???; Gotenburg ?? ]

- took a train to Minneapolis, with the cost of the trip a total of $21. In todays dollar, this would be closer to $400+;
this is likely for all of them, 2 adults and 3 children. [ See my document .... Family travels from Quebec to Minnosota [written in Aug 2023];
my PC .... Grue Family Tree ....]

- settled at Cokato ... many wolves and bears in the area
- her father [Per Halstensson, b 1823], hunted them since they were likely to eat sheep ... the settlers depended on sheep for the wool for clothing and for mats/carpets - sometimes they sold carpets for 35 cents a yard.
- Per Halstensson made bullets by melting down the metal spoons they had
- the above article says that neighbors of her parents were Jesse and Frank James .... but a very general google search doesn't mention living in the Wright Co area of MN .... Northfield is more like 150 kms or so south and east .... at one time they were captured at Medina, about 135 kms south .... it might be possible that that they stayed in the vicinity for a short time, but this may also be a 'story'
- came to Canada in 1902 ... on CPR land at Kincaid, later moving to Kennedy* was Kincaid a local community name or an early school district, although it appears there wasn't a school district called Kincaid [the town of Kincaid, SK is west of Assiniboia], but it is still possible there was a community district
