bullet  Research Notes:

Summary:

Nils Uranus Hanson was my 4th half cousin, 3 times removed. In Sweden, his name would have been Nils Halstensson, he used the name "Nils Hanson" in the US. He was born on 17 May 1864 during the vogage across the Altantic.

The 1875 MN State Census (for Stockholm Twp, Wright Co) has an interesting comment regarding his birth. It records that he is 10 years old and that he was born on the Altantic Ocean. It appears that under international law, he was considered to be born in the country that his parents left. We have records that the Per Halstensson family left Sweden on 26 Apr 1864 [ see point 5 on his father's research notes ] . Thus, Nils was born after that since the family traveling consisted of Per and 5 females (his wife and 4 oldest daughters).

It would not be correct to say that Nils was born in Östmark parish; therefore I have not entered a birth parish, although the family came from Östmark parish.

One of the earliest records in the US is from the East Union Lutheran Church records [US Evangelical Lutheran Church, Swedish American Lutheran]. This church is is about 10 kms south east of the current town of Carver, MN. According to this record the Pehr/Per Halstenson family arrived in America in 1864 and it appears that they first came to the area of Carver Co, MN, likely the area around Watertown.

It is interesting to note that both Per Jönsson Modig and his wife and family left the Fäbacken farm in Lekvattnet parish
on the 15 Apr 1864 and the Per Halstensson family left Östmark parish on 26 Apr 1864. I haven't found a ship manifest for either, but I think it is reasonable to say that the two families traveled together. Kay Breding Netz states that the Per Jönsson/Jansson Modig family arrived at Quebec and then travelled to Carver Co, MN where they lived for about a year. We also know that the Per Halstensson family was at Carver Co, MN since they are recorded in the East Union Swedish Lutheran Church records arriving there in 1864 and then they left at the end of Aug 1864 for Moores Prairie in Stockholm Twp in Wright Co, MN [north west of Watertown, a distance of about 40 kms]. Per Jönsson Modig family left the Watertown area in 1865, also for Moores Prairie [it seems that the original spelling was Mooers Prairie.

I have not found a family relationship between the two families [25 Jul 2023]. However, there were a large number of families from the Östmark area that settled in Stockholm Twp or surrounding areas.

In the East Union Lutheran Church records, Nils Uranus is recorded as a son of Per Halstenson and Kristen Nilsdtr, along with his siblings. He is also recorded with the family in the Stockholm Lutheran Church records [Wright Co, MN].

Many Family Trees on Ancestry do not include any information on Nils Uranus. Many record Nils' brother Peter but name him as Nils Peter Hanson. I think what has happened is that Nils Hanson 'seems' to have not been included in the family. Is this because there is no common birth record in the US or in Sweden, because he was born during the voyage across the Atlantic? And so someone simply started to name Peter as Nils Peter and others followed suit - those that followed do not typically record the birth of Nils Uranus Halstenson/Hanson.

Based on the posted "Family history pages" on Family Search id LYH6-6BW [poster, JoanneDeGarimore], it seems that Nils, and his father, and arrived in the Sheyenne around by 1887. They also had a general store in the Sheyenne area - this is not noted in the Sheyenne local history. Joneel Hvinden [a poster on Findagrave] had indicated that Nils and his father had sold the store to the Garnas Bros - the Sheyenne history book has a little information on the Granas / Garnaas store, but nothing on when it was purchased or from whom.

¹ The Two Harbors Iron News, [Two Harbors, Lake Co, MN] issue 17 Jun 1902, page 6, reports that he died the previous day.**

² Family Search Family Tree [LYH6-6BW] includes a post regarding 2 pages on Nils [page 3 is a photo of Nils that has been copied to various family trees on Ancestry and also posted on his findagrave link [222175531]. I had contacted Jonelle Hvinden who posted the photo on findagrave. On 1 Aug 2023 she had written that the pages are from "our family history papers". Although the two pages from Family search appear to be from a printed booklet, it appears that this is not a published manuscript and only a few direct family members have a copy.

The pages posted on Familysearch have a missing page or top of page 2 has been cropped out. On page 2, the death of Nils is attributed to a heart attack - he was apparently walking home but fell ill and he then stopped at a friend's house. Nils laid down but later had died.

This is different from what was reported in the newspaper, noted above. But it is quite likely the 'official' cause of death was a heart attack.

The 2 pages posted on Familysearch also indicated that Nils ran a grain elevator and that he and his father had a general merchanized store at Sheyenne in 1887. Jonelle Hvinden reported that the store was sold to the Garnas Brothers.

I have reviewed the Sheyenne local history book, but there is no a mention of Nils Hanson in the book. There was a grain elevator that was called the "Farmer's Elevator" owned by the Richter family - perhaps Nils had operated the elevator for awhile. The above pages note that Nils was building a house east of Sheyenne, and then the top of the next page had been cut. It appears that the land that John Berglund and Tilda Hanson, a sister to Nils, had for awhile was initially homestead land of Nils Hanson's.

³ Martha was born on 24 Apr 1869. Her parents were Petter/Peter Hanson Myrman [b in Östmark, but no family relationship]. Martha died 22 Mar 1947, Devils Lake, Ramsey Co, ND. When Nils Uranus died in 1902, Martha and the children returned to the Eddy Co, ND area. On 3 Oct 1903 she was married again to John A Warner [1870-1936]. Martha and John had 2 children, half siblings to my cousins.

³ Wilbert. served in WW 1 as a private. Wilbert had taken out an Alberta homestead entry on 19 Apr 1913. However, he did not pursue the homestead and it was cancelled by the land dept. NE 32-38-7-W4th - this area is bet Hwy 884 and Hwy 24, Craigmillar, south and east of the Simon and Nels Prestlien homesteads.

2. Ancestry Family Trees: the following 4 FTs tend to be fairly accurate
- BUT still need to research to verify; the 1st FT noted seems mostly complete - the others, not so much

4. There is no record of a marriage in US Swedish Church Records, 1885-1890; also no record of confirmation, but the family may have already move to Gennessee Twp, Kandiyohi Co

5. Iron Range Research Center
Nels Hanson, death 16 Jan 1902, Two Harbors, Lake Co, MN

6. East Union Lutheran Church, Carver Co, MN - see point 5 on his father's research notes

7. Findagrave id, 222175531 for Nils Uranus Hanson, Lakeview Cemetey, Two Harbors, MN;
and a note: "Children include Howard, Florence Hanson who married Ira Webb, Wilbert Hanson, Earl Hanson, Ethel Hanson who married John J. Palmer and Shafter Hanson" ; and links to the children
- this findagrave id, also notes that Nils Uranus Hanson's wife, Martha remarried to John A Werner and they likely moved to ND, since it notes that she died in 1947 and is buried at Devils Lake, ND.

Note: this findagrave records 2 siblings for Nils ...baby girl 1871-1871. And Johan A Anderson 1872-1962 ...
BUT this is totally incorrect. See my Legacy database for Johan A Andersson, b 1872

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note: also links to his father,
Pere [?] Halstensson Hanson with death as Jan 1905 and notes:

"Pere was born in Sweden to parents Person Halstensson and Stina Johnsdatter. He married Ingeborg Jonsdatter on 22 Oct 1844 in Ostmark, Sweden. She passed away and he remarried to Karin Nilsdatter on the 9 Dec 1860 in Sweden. The family immigrated to America in 1864, with their son, Nels Uranus Hanson being born on the journey over onboard ship. His children from his first marriage came along also. Pere changed his last name to Hanson. He might also have used Peter as his first name. His grave is assumed to be unmarked."

BUT: .................. but this the wrong person - Karin was Karin Olofsdotter, b 1833 and she was the mother of
Jon A Anderson and Johan M Anderson - she had remairred to Halsten Halstensson, b 1843 and they came to ND in ... When Karin Olofsdotter died in 1917, he returned to Sweden where he died [see Jon A Andersson research page
and the information from the Sheyenne ND history book

and a link to Per Halstensson's wife, Karin with a wrong date of death in 1917, with the notation: She was married to Pere Halstensson/Hanson on 9 Dec 1860 in Sweden [wrong !!!!!! ]. She gave birth to her first child, Nels Uranus Hanson on board ship crossing to America. Her husband died in January 1905 and is buried in Riverside Cemetery."
the findagrave source/contributor is Jonelle Hvinden, and information added 28 Aug 2014
AND, this post also links to a "baby girl Halstensson" born 4 Nov 1871 and died 8 Nov 1871 and buried at Stockholm Lutheran Church cemetry, Stockholm Twp, Wright Co, MN

**** NOTE:

The above Nils Hanson 1910 US Census record may be correct --- Brodin FT has deleted 1910 record [24 Jul 2023]

According to the Brodin-Ostlund FT the youngest son Nils Hanson was Shafter (Dewey) Hanson and references WW 1 draft card (12 Sept 1918) reports that Shafter was born on 4 Jul 1898 in North Dakota and that his nearest relative was John Warner from Sheyenne, Eddy Co and that he was a farm labourer. Also if he was born in ND in 1898, he isn't recorded in the above 1900 US Census with the family - he would have only been 2 years old, so why would he not be with the family?

Also, many of the records that are referenced in the Brodin-Ostlund FT for Nils' children are confusing and conflicting. For example, the FT notes that son Howard (b 1893 in Sheyenne Eddy Co, ND) and died in 1902 at Two Harbors, Lake Co, MN. Yet the FT references both the WW 1 and WW 2 drafts records - if he died in 1902, he would could not have been drafted in 1918 or 1942.

Conclusion: Since I have no clear or collaborating evidence, I am not going to record Nils' death, his marriage or his children. Although it is likely some of the information from the Brodin Ostlund FT is correct, I need to find more convincing evidence of Nils Halstensson / Hanson. And 2 other FTs also record this - Helland and Whole FTs and much of it corresponds to the findagrave link for Nils U/H Hanson .....
