- my great-great grandfather Jon Jonsen Grue built this farm (Klokkervang) in 1822, and my brother Arne is therefore the fifth farmer on Klokkervang. John Jonsen Grue was a school teacher and sexton in Os from 1819-1862. He had no formal education, but was asked to take over these two jobs after his brother died in 1813 (Simen Johnson Grue, born 1766).

4. E. Sundt wrote in his book/report, "Røros and region" ["Røros og omegn"] in 1858:

... priests changed frequently, but Jon S. Grue managed the church books (klokker) and schoolteaching until 1806, when the roles were taken over by his son Simen Jonsen [ Jon S Grue died in 1807 ]. This occurred during the visitation to Tolgen by Bishop Beck who also had inserted in his order, "And the name 'Klokker' was then exchanged for the name' Kirkesanger'.' However the term Klokker continued to be used by the people here until 1813 [ this was when Simen Jonsen Grue died ]. But it has been written that a younger brother [ of Simen Jonsen ], Jon Jonsen Grue, who as a youngster had taken farm work in Melhus in Throndhiem, had then assumed the role of schoolmaster. He came and took over his brother's work, and until this day the people are satisfied with his work.

In the year 1822 however, there was a change with the Sexton/parish clerk (Klokker) role that related to the school ombudsman \endash it was split into two so that the actual Os community got a new teacher (a son of the late Simen Jonsen, Jon Simensen Grue, who was/is the teacher in Tolgen and also is a skilled man) but Dalsbygden had no specific or formal teacher. [ this is a bit confusing since the last couple of sentences in the above the paragraph indicate that Jon Jonsen Grue was the schoolmaster; however, based on the information from Per Harold Grue (see notes under Jon Jonsen Grue, Jon Jonsen Grue did not have any formal education, so it may be possible that Jon Simensen Grue (born 1804) was the formal or official teacher in Os and Jon Jonsen Grue was the unofficial teacher in Dalsbygda ]. Thus, the Os area, which in 1748 received his first schoolteacher, little by little has gained a third And for many småtræk [?] it has become clear to me that the culture and morals have evolved in the same proportion. Now with new progress in Dalsbygdens schools, this is likely to continue to be refined throughout life!

Sexton/parish clerk (Klokker) and the teacher in Dalsbygdens school district, Jon Jonsen Grue, went from farm boy to become a school master who had not, though at that time living quite nearby, had been able to attend a type of school teacher training college, which in 1802 or 3 was created in Trondhjem by Bishop Schjønheider, priest, later bishop Beck - who even as cantor Roverud in 1844 came to Tønset to give church teaching singers in choral music … [?] - this man managed in 1849 to send his son to Klæbo seminary/college and paid for his schooling there for 2 years with 94 spd. But now he has the pleasure - and I believe that the village shares it \endash that the son [ it's not clear if this is referring to Jon Jonsen Grue or his son Thore Jonsen Grue \endash the next sentence would imply Thore ] has been acting in the old school teacher post well. He took up his post during my stay in the village [ Eilert had completed his research in 1851 - Jon Jonsen Grue took up his post in 1813, so therefore, this likely means his son, Thore]. Since the next Sunday was church service and after the old custom here in the northern Baltic valley, the Sexton and parish clerk (Klokker) held a reading in the school room, so I felt movement [ emotion ] in many faces of the young hopefuls when the schoolmaster first intoned a psalm [ this implies the term churchsinger or kirkesanger ], and read out a sermon (Wexel's) and then all the people (including the children ) listening. Yet in Dalsbygden there is no real schoolhouse for the rather small [tætsluttede ?? ] village. But I know it will not be long before it gets one built. It is perhaps not many of our rural villages where one can find out about the village's school system's development from its first origins. But these and many other legends and stories about Dalsbygden are also carefully gathered into one beginning in the year 1700 "yearbook" by the aforementioned respectable Klokker (Sexton, Parish Clerk) Jon Jonsen Grue.

At various sm [?] in conversations with people in Dalsbygden, I felt that in the very close neighboring Os-village, swept along Glommen, has not retained or developed such a formation and morality as Dalsbygden. I suppose that some of this assessment was a result of my later review of the sheriff's records. But my stay in Os was too short for establishing a final comparison. After a day's stay at the rectory Tolgens I did again a detour up to Annexet Vindgelen where I made a pleasant acquaintance with the excellent skilled churchsinger
