Biographical Sketch for: Simen Mortensen Hulbaekdal (1680-1752)

Written by Rueben D Grue, 25 Jan 2013; revised 9 Oct 2013

The first known Grue ancestor was Simen Mortensen Hulbækdal. It is believed that he was born about 1680 in the northern part of Hedmark County, Norway at Øver Rendal parish (Upper Rendalen). Apparently there are no parish records for this area or time period. It is also believed he died about 1752 at Tolga. Most sources suggest that birth and death records for Simen Mortensen are not available. However, the Norway Digitized Probate Documents indicate his death in 1752. Some sources indicate that Simen Mortensen's father was Morten Knutsen Undset and that Morten's father was Knut Mortensen. Although this is likely to be true, I have not been able to find any collorabrating records of this. Ivar Sæter in his book, "Tolgen" (page 80) suggests he came from Gudbrandsdalen. This is quite a bit further south of the Rendalen/Tolga area and so this is unlikely. No other sources indicate this. Perhaps Simen Mortensen's ancestors had originally come from the Gudbrandsdalen area?

Simen Mortensen Hulbækdal came to the Tolga clerical district in the early 1700's. It has been recorded that he had first cleared land on the farm Haugene - this cleared land became known as Hulbaekdal (in the land register known as the "matrikkel", the farm was named as Hulbekkdalen). Locally, the farm was known as Simagarden. The tax appraisal/valuation of 1728 shows that Simen Mortensen was the owner of Hulbaekdal. He first lived in a mud hut and possibly he was one of the first to be involved in the copper smelter hut at Tolga (Ivar Sæter's book, page 80, 82-83). Simen Mortensen is recorded in the records/accounts of the Tolga smelter. It appears that he was a well respected since one of his jobs was to distribute pay to other workers. He was also the best salaried person at the smelter
(Klokkervang by Thoralf Grue, page 3).

Simen Mortensen Hulbaekdal was married twice. His first wife was known as Anne Andersdatter (born about 1684 in Tolga). Simen and Anne had 4 children: Anders Simensen born 1715, Eli Simensdtr born 1717, Guri Simensdtr born 1720, and Morten Simensen born 1722. I have not been able to confirm the birth dates of Simen and Anne's children. I also have found little evidence that Eli and Guri were children of Anne Andersdtr, however it is likely. Simen Mortensen Hulbaekdal's second marriage was to Magdalena Jonsdotter who was most likely born in Särna, Kopparberg County, Sweden. Apparently Magdalena went by the name Magnhild in Norway. Many sources have indicated that neither Simen or Magnhild were buried at Tolga. There does not seem to be an explanation for this in regards to Simen. A number of sources report that Magnhild had been living with her son, Jon Simensen Grue at Gruva and that one day she had decided to walk to Langen where there was a summer cabin on the grazing lands in the mountains. But she never returned and was not heard of again (this story was recorded by a number of sources, including Thoralf Grue, John Midtdal, and was told to me by Eliv Grue when I was in Norway in 1980).

1. source: Orville Movold (personal correspondence - 1983; photocopy of family history page; translation from Mary Grue, Oct 1983; Rueben Grue, January 2005 - basic/literal translation); photocopy pages - Orville Movold indicated a cousin (John Midtdal, a professor at the University of Olso), "has supplied me with over 90 pages of geneology, dating back to the 1700's";

Simen Mortensen born about 1680, died about 1752 was first married to Ane Andersdatter (several pieces of information missing).
They first cleared land and operated the farm Hulbækdal (Simagarden), Tolga.
Children:
1. Anders [Simensen], birth about 1715, burial, 1 Jan 1781; 65 3/4 years old
Anders was the next farmer on Simagarden.
2. Morten [Simensen], born about 1723, burial, 31 May 1801, 78 years old;
married to Berit Larsdtr. Nordvang, Dalsbygda, born about 1731, burial 16 May 1813, 82 years old.
Morten was the farmer of Mortensgard, partitioned or divided from Simagarden.

Simen Mortensen second marriage to Magdalena (Magnhild) Jonsdatter, born in Sarina in Sweden [see note below]
Children:
3. Jon [Simensen], born about 1729, burial 7 June 1807, 78 years old;
first married to Sigrid Estensdtr. Grue, born about 1734, burial 9 Jan 1774, 40 years old. Jon had good capability (intelligence) and was further instructed from priest, Schjelderup. Later he was sexton and teacher in Os. Farmer of Grue, Dalsbygda.
4. Eli, married to Ole Olsen Sæter, Vingelen
5. Guri, married to Ole Estensen Båtmann

Simen Mortensen obtained in 1728 from Tolgasgard's owner a plot of land cleared on Hulbækmoen and it was the farm Hulbækdal, in daily speech called Simagarden. Simen, according to tradition, is said to come from Rendalen. In Jacob B. Bull's book of family and relations in upper Rendal, one cannot find the name Morten, but in the payroll list for the Tolgen smelter, one can discover Simen Undset from Rendalen, the head of that smelter, and it is possible that it is the man that is the pioneer of Simagarden. ( from Tolga - Gards og Slektshistorie - * see below, point 3)

Under the farm Rugsveen nedre or (also known as) søndre Undset, is mentioned Knut Mortensen Undset, born 1614, died 1688. From a (solid/source) researcher, he was the building contractor for several churches, including Kvikne church in 1652 and Vingelen church in 1653 and Eidsberg Church. He had a son, Morten Knutsen, born 1630, died 1734 and there was a lodging/residence that was left behind to his son, Simen Mortensen, who is identical with the first farmer of Simagarden. This should agree with the age of the father who was born in 1630. This goes for the farm Rugsveen, and he was the cottager/farmer in 1695 (see Jacob B Bull). (*from Tolga - Gards og Slektshistorie * see below, point 3)

Magdalena was known in writing and speech in Norway as Magnhild. There is something mysterious with both Simen's and Magnhild's death. He is not found among the people buried in Tolga. Magnhild lived to be very old and lived in her later years with her son at Gruen. One summer day she wanted to go to Langen, where they had their sæter (cabin in the mountains where cattle grazed). So she walked to the farm [to the sæter], but was not heard from again.

*** NOTE:
- Magdalena's birth - Särna, in Älvdalen Municipality, Dalarna län (Co),
[abt 50 kms south and east of Irdre, Sweden where Esten Jonsen Grue, born 1754 had lived];

for genealogy purposes this area was previously covered under Kopparbergs län [ from - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dalarna_County ... "The Kopparberg's län (literally Copper Mountain County) was finally created by royal decree in 1647. In 1997, the name of the county was changed to Dalarna County.] [ according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Särna ..... "The two parishes Särna and Idre were originally part of Norway but were occupied by Swedish farmers in 1644. The 1645 Treaty of Brömsebro was ambiguous regarding the status of the parishes, but when the exact path of the border was to be decided in 1751 Norway accepted a border west of Idre and Särna." Särna/Idre is around 100 kms east of the Norway border and about 150 kms south and east from Tolga, Norway ].

- other sources have recorded her birth in Jämtland Co, Sweden but have not indicated a parish or town. Österlund, is one of the main centers in Jämtland, and is about 250 kms further north and a bit east of Särna (Österlund is about 250 kms east of Trondheim, Norway)

The first to clear land and countryside on Hulbækdal was called / had the name of Simen Mortenson. This is still known in everyday language as Simargarden. (Orville Movold's correspondence has the same paragraphs and so was likely copied from "Tolga - Gards ...) see above 2 paragraphs, under point 1)

Simen Mortensen was born about 1680 and was the first one that started or opened the smelter hut/cabin at Tolga in 1700.

The edition at UND and the page that I reviewed in May 2008 (under the farm Rugsveen Nedre) does not indicate a son Simen Mortenson - it lists 3 children of Morten Knutsen, born 1630 - Knut, born 1670 (but there is a question mark beside Knut); Berger, born 1672; Kirsten, born 1675; Peder, born 1679. page 80 (side 86) - Hulbækdal --- The first settler was Simen and presumbably he was from Gudbrandsdalen It is said that he had first lived in a mud hut. A son was in a horrible accident with a cow [?] and another [son] came to Mortensgaarden. Anders stayed home [at Simagarden-Hulbækal; NOTE: Anders Simensen Hulbædkal, born 1715; but in next following sentence, Ivar Sæter actually refers to a grandson, Anders Simensen who was born 1780]. He [Anders Simensen, born 1780] left a daughter Beret, and his widow was married again to Lars Knudsen from Vingelen (on page 80, under the farm Hulbækdal, the translation is "He died and his widow (Olava from Henriksgaard) married again to Lars Gammelstuen from Vingelen"), with whom she had 2 daughters - Anne and Ingeborg.

page 82-83 (side 88-89) - footenote ?

- With the appraisal / valuation of 1728, Simen Mortensen was the owner of Hulbækdal and from this [?] its name was probably Simagaarden. Approximately in 1800, it was farmed by Anders [Anders Simensen, born 1780]: he left a daughter Beret and his widow was married again to Lars Knudsen with whom she had 2 daughters - Anne and Ingeborg .... A daughter of his first marriage Beret married John Paulsen from Paulsgaard. They had 4 sons (Anders, Lars, Paul and John) and 1 daughter, Olava. Lars traveled to America in 1870. John, the youngest was a teacher. Olava married Nils Nilsen Bakken from Hodaien and they also traveled to America. Anders the eldest took over the farm after his father in 1888 and then gave/left half to his brother, Paul Johnsen and in the land register his farm was named Dalsgjelten. Anders died in 1892. He was married to Petronille Halstensdatter Lien; he left a son, Anders. His widow married in 1895 to John Olsen Perflatgard who died in 1904; he left a daughter.

page 80 (side 86) - Mortensgaarden - The first user/farmer was from Hulbækdal named Morten (hence, the name). After him, his son Per had gone to Røros to work and has since build Pederslien [likely Morten's son Per took over the farm Mortensgaarden when he came back from Røros]. [ Den første bruger var Hublækdal og heg Morten (deraf navnet ). Efter ham hans søn, Per, som maattesælge til Røros verk, og som siden byggede i Pederslien ]

page 77, 78 (side 83, 84) . The following were the other 10 cottage farmers or renters on Hulbækmoen : ... Simon Mortensen (Mortensgaard) [ ? - it should be Morten Simensen (the son of Simen) from Mortensgaard, since Morten`s daughter`s birth indicates residence as Hulbechmoen ??? ;; however, the reference here could still be Simon Mortensen since he may have lived also at Mortensgaard before or during the time that his son was there; the son could still have been at Hulbækmoen when the daughter was born. ??? it is not clear what year the comment "...10 cottage farmers ..." was made ]

It is stated in the tax statement [the year is not clearly stated, but a couple of sentences earlier the year 1728 is noted] that they (the workers) are readily prepared to pay a tax when they get logs from the forest that are necessary for household use. According to the order the workers owe: .... Neil Svendsens widow, Anne Jørgensdaatter and Simon Mortensen 1/8 calve skins each. Thereafter the name of the farm was Holbekmoen.

In the land book for 1728 it is stated that the common goods of the farmers of Hulbækmoen were 2 and 3/8 skins [the owners are listed]: ........... Anders Simensen's widow, Margrethe and Paul Hansen (it isn't clear if this refers to them together or if Paul Hansen is on of the other owners - 9-10 are listed if Paul is a separate owner).

8. Research Article, Guri Simensdtr and Eli Simensdtr Hulbaekdal - Grue [ 22 Feb 2015 ]

Conclusion - Guri and Eli Simensdtr Hulbækdal / Grue -- sisters to our Jon Simensen Grue, born 1729 ???

It is probable that Guri and Eli are sisters to our Jon Simensen Grue, born 1729, therefore the daughters of Simen Mortensen Hulbækdal, born 1680. However, at this point there is no convincing evidence of this conclusion. Further research is needed.

On my Legacy database, I have decided to include both Guri and Eli as 'half-sisters' to Jon Simensen Grue , born 1729. I have recorded their mother as Anne Andersdatter, citing IGI as the source, BUT this source has a low level of surety - #1, marginal evidence. Although there is little evidence of their mother, given the confirmation record on the Norway Parish Records with the birth of Guri around 1720 and the record of death for Eli (birth around 1717), their mother could not have been Magnhild Jonsdatter.

- point 9, see below - this supports Guren or Guri has the daughter of Simen Mortensen from his first marriage

9. Jan Erik Aas' excell sheet; http://www.jeaas.com/sk-roros.htm

** on these sheets, the date is usually the date that the event is recorded, so death or the change because of the death is 1752
- this isn't clear - it somewhat makes it appear that the death in 1752 is Magdalena - because the Tolga ... + " alive widow e / Simen Mortensen" --- this might mean, Simen Mortensen is a widow because of the death of his first wife
BUT, if this was the case, then the word should be enkemann, a widower, rather than enke

SO, the most likely conclusion is: Magdelena Jonsdtr; Tolga smetler/cabin and living widow of Simen Mortensen; so 1752 is likely the death of Simen Mortensen

levende - live or living
live - from liv, meaning life
enke - widow (A widow is a woman whose spouse has died); enkemann - widower
