Research Notes:
Summary:
Initially I had information on Morten Simensen Hulbækdal recorded based on the information from "Klokkervang" [Per Harold Grue, 1997 an updated version of Thoralf Grue's of Klokkervang published in 1922/23]. Klokkervang had recorded that Morten Simensen Hulbækdal's 2 youngest children dying young [død som barn] and then a 3rd daughter, Berit b 1772 married to Peder Andersen Lien. Per Harold's account of Morten Simensen's children is likely based on the information from Eystein Eggen Tolga Bygebok, published in 1968 [see below, point 6.b. ].
In early Jan 2025, I reviewed this information again, and noted that the youngest was recorded born in 1763 and Berit b in 1772, 9 year gap. This is a fairly big gap. And so I developed 2 goals:
[1] determine if other children were born Morten Simensen Hulbækdal and [2] determine if there was a connection between the information I had found about a person named Lars Mortensen Holbekkmoen from Tolga - he was the father of my 3rd great grandmother, Ingeborg Larsdtr and she was married to Mikkel Nilsen [1797-1869]. I had found this from the Bygebok for Engerdal vol 2, page 205.
In April 2012 and again in 2013 I tried to search the Tolga parish Register, but the handrwiting for the volume for the years 1763-1770 is very difficult to read. However, a researcher/transcriber, Marie Tollman, had transcribed this volume and and in Jan 2025 I searched this record on Norway's Digitalarkivet, I found a birth for a boy, Lars Mortensen with his parents as Morten Simensen and Berit Larsdatter. The year of birth for this Lars was 1770. On 17 Jan 2025, I continued to research Marie Tollman's transcriptions to see if I could find records for the children of Morten Simensen, b 1723. The initial link to Marie Tollman's transciptions is: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/source/9218 These is the results for register, 1733-1767:
1. Anna /Anne Mortensdatter, baptism, Ous church: 6 Aug 1760 [https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/255/pd00000005444196] 2. Simon Mortensen, baptism, Tolgen: 17 Apr 1763 [https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/255/pd00000005445096]
NOTE: there are no further births for father Morten Simensen in this volume/register .... BUT looking at the next register:
These are the results for register, 1768-1786 3. Lars Mortensen, baptism, Ous/Tolgen: 4 Mar 1770 [https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/255/pd00000001638765] ... his birth is also noted on in the parish register Chronlogical list Tolga Parish register (official) no. 2, Chronological list] 1768-1786, p. 22 no 16 4. Berit Mortensdtr, baptism, Ous/Tolgen: 15 May 1772 [https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/255/pd00000001639886] ... also in this volume: Simen Mortensen, deaths/burials: 28 Mar 1773, age 9 yrs 50 days [https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/267/pg00000001055050]
... also in this volume: Anne Mortensdtr, Confirmation, Ous 4 Oct 1778, age 18 [https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/279/pk00000000317761]
and then the results for register, 1787-1814:
Lars Mortensen, confirmation, Vingelen; 19 Oct 1788, age 18 ¾ [https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/279/pk00000000765130] * Berit Mortensdtr and Per Andersen, marriage, 24 Apr 1801; [https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/327/pv00000000583716] * Vingelen church is about 10 kms to the east of the Tolga church
My conclusion: [1]. children of Morten Simensen. It is very clear that Morten Simensen Hulbækdal had at least 4 children. However, reviewing the births, there is still a gap of about 5-6 years [early 1764 to fall 1769]. I don't have a good explanation. It is possible that there was at least one other boy named Lars that could have been born in 1764 or into 1765 - this would then correpond with the information from the Tolga Bygebok and Per Harold Grue's Klokkervang. But why wasn't he recorded in the parish register either as a birth or as a death? Possibly because he was stillborn and the family noted his name as Lars, or possibly the parish priest had mistakenly not recorded the birth/death.
A note on Norwegian naming patterns [from an older website, Ancestors from Norway [https://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/index.html ... and an article by John Føllesdal, "Norwegian Naming Patterns"]: "...we can say that prior to about 1900, rural Norwegians did not have surnames, unless they were members of the educated upper class (priests, high ranking civil servants, etc). City dwellers, including members of the educated upper class, did have surnames. The rural Norwegian farmers had a first name, and sometimes a middle name, which they were baptized with. They added a patronym and a farm name to that first name in their everyday interactions with other people. The fact that neither the patronym nor the farm name was treated as a surname ... And, further the oldest son was named after his paternal grandfather, and the second son after his maternal grandfather. Likewise, the oldest daughter was named after her paternal grandmother, and the second daughter after her maternal grandmother. In Morten's family, the first daughter was named Anna/Anne [Morten's mother was Ane Andersdtr]; the first son was named Simen after Morten's father; the second son was named Lars, after the maternal grandfather, Lars; and the second daughter was name Berit - I haven't found the names for Morten's wife's parents. If there was a boy named Lars and this Lars died very young, it was common that the next son born would be also named Lars [John Føllesdal ... if a child died, the next child would be named after the deceased child].
I should also note that if fact "Hulbækdal" is not a surname even though I and other family researchers have treated it as such. "Hulbækdal" is really a name of a farm or more likely a general area, about 2 kms to the north west of the village of Tolga. Additionally there are a number of variations of the farm/area: Hulbechmoe, Hulbeckmoen, Hulbexmoen, Holbeckmoe, Hulbekkmo. From the Tolga bygebok [page 260, 261] ... Simen Mortensen [Morten's father] obtained in 1728 from Tolgasgard's owner a plot of land cleared on Hulbækmoen and it was the farm Hulbækdal, in daily speech called Simagarden ... and, it was said "his first home was a dirt hut by Hulbækken" [dirt hut may have been more of a 'dugout'; Hulbækken appears to be a small stream in the area]
My conclusion: [2]. Are they the same person? This much more difficult to reach a definitive conclusion. I think the answer is most likely yes, they are the same person: Lars Mortensen, the son of Morten Simensen Hulbækdal, and Lars Mortensen Holbekkmoen from Tolga, the father of my 3rd great grandmother, Ingeborg who was married to Mikkel Nilsen [1797-1869]. My reasoning: .. the date of birth, 1770 .. both are most likely from the same area, only a spelling variation of separates the two ... general area of Hulbaekmoen. .. Ingri or Ingeborg [spelling variation] are the same name with the same birth and likely both born in Tolga parish .. Lars Mortensen Hulbækal was born in 1770 and did not die as a child .. he was alive in 1888, almost age 19 ... it would not be unusal that he moved to the area around Sylen in Røros, since many people from Os-Togla moved to this area to work with Røros Copperworks or to work supplying wood or charcoal to the smelter hut at Fedmundhytte in Røros parish .. it is too much of a coindence that they are not the same person
However, I do not have overhelming evidence that two Lars Mortensen's are the same person. BUT at this time, I will conclude that they are the same and record Lars Mortensen Holbekkmoen [as recorded in the Bygebok for Engerda], as the son of Morten Simensen Hulbækdal. This means that Lars Mortensen Holbekkmoen was the grandson of Simen Mortensen Hulbækdal, 1680-1752, my 5th great grandfather. I will use the 'surname' Hulbækdal for Lars Mortensen [noted in the Bygebok for Engerda], but also known as Lars Mortensen Holbekkmoen.
It is quite possible that at some time in the future, I will find convincing evidence.

As mentioned under Hulbækdal, Morten and Anders Simensønner divided their father's farm between them. Morten built his own home, and it became Mortensgård. In 1759 he married Berit Larsdatter Nordvang from Dalsbygda. They had sons Simen and Lars, both of whom died in childhood. Their daughter Berit, born in 1772, grew up. Morten Simensen died at the age of 78 in 1801 and Berit Larsdatter at the age of 89 in 1813. Their daughter Berit Mortensdatter married Peder Andersen from Lien øvre. The Røros Works archive states that after the widow Berit Larsdatter had died in 1813, this man [Peder Andersen] had arbitrarily and without authority taken possession of the part or 1/4 calfskin in the farm Hulbækmoen to which the Røros Works' participation had the right of ownership. A case was brought against Peder Andersen, and at the Bergretten he was sentenced to tidy up the property, pay 1 spd. to the poor fund, pay the costs of the case with 4 spd. and vacate the farm with a deadline of the first Monday after the verdict was given
Peder Andersen had to obey the order, and he settled up in Lia, see Pederlien.
Mortensgård was leased and attached to Tore Estensen Flatgård [ mentions the terms, with date noted as 1817]
Tore Estensen ran Mortensgård as a subfarm of Flatgård from 1817 to 1876 together with his son Ole Toresen. His great-grandson Paul Olsen, bought the farm from the Røros works and put the land under Flatgård. All houses were removed, and the memory of the regulations that Røros Verk imposed on its tenants remains. The case against Peder Andersen shows that the Verk wanted to have both ends meet when it came to basic rights.

Conflict: Morten's birth
- 1723 - 1801 Census - 1721 - Klokkervang by Thoralf Grue and Per Harold Grue - 1723 - death/burial - 18 Jan 2025 ... Marie Tollman's transcription: buried 31 May 1801 at age 78 years ... birth abt 1723
As of 1 Oct 2012 - there is no good way to resolve the conflict without reviewing the birth records - perhaps the LDS microfilm for Tønset/Tynest might work (see John Simensen Grue, born 1729).
In the meantime, I have concluded his birth to be 1723, since it is likely that he (that is, Morten or the mother) reported his birth in the 1801 censes.
