Jon Jonsen Grue (1822-1876) Biographical Sketch

Written by Rueben D Grue, 18 Mar 2013; revised 27 Sep 2014

Jon Jonsen Grue was born on 5 May 1822 in the parish of Os in Togla, Hedmark, Norway. His father was also named Jon Jonsen Grue (1783-1863) and he who was the youngest son of Jon Simensen Grue (1729-1807). Jon Jonsen's mother was Aagot Larsdtr (1789-1837). Jon Jonsen (1822-1876) grew up on the family farm known as Klokkervang, a few kilometers west of the town of Os in northern Hedmark county (this area also is referred to North Østerdalen). Jon Jonsen's father (Jon Jonsen Grue 1783-1863) grew up on the farm known as Gruva or Gruben, a few kilometers west and a bit south of the town of Os. Jon (1783-1863) took over the job of teacher and Klokekr at Os after his brother Simen Jonsen Grue (1766-1813) died. A son of Jon (1783-1863), Tore Jonsen Grue (1831-1906) continued with the job Klokker (sexton/clerk and church precentor) and Teacher in the Os area. It is likely that the children of Jon Jonsen Grue (1783-1863) were taught and given religious instruction by their father.

Jon Jonsen Grue (1822-1876) left Os-Tolga parish in 1843 going to Kristiansund (sometimes spelled with the first letter as "C"). Kristiansund is in the county of Møre og Romsdal and is about 250 kms west from Tolga. It is not clear why he went to Kristiansund. He had an uncle (Christen Jonsen Grue, 1780-1864) who was a Klokker in Molde, Møre og Romsdal; his younger brother, Lars Jonsen Grue (1826-1877) had also gone to their uncle's place in 1839 (shortly after the death of their mother in 1837). Kristiansund is about 100 kms further north of Molde and on a different fjoird. Thoraf Grue, the author of Klokkervang, reports that Jon Jonsen Grue (1822-1876) worked as a trader with the company Borthen at Kristiansund. A general 'goggle search' records Johan Margido Borthen (1837-1916) who was Handelsmann or a merchant, trader and he is also recorded as a wholersaler and fish exporter from Kristiansund.

It is likely that Jon Jonsen Grue (1822-1876) lived at Kristiansund most of his life. He was married twice. His first marriage was to Trine Margrethe Olausdatter (possibly her surname was Vigen). Unfortunately many parts of the the pages of the Norwegian Parish Registers for Kristiansund parish for this time period show the results of the fire damage - because of this, I haven't been able to find a date of marriage. The registers do show that Jon Jonsen Grue and Trine had 2 children. The oldest was Anna Sophie Grue. She was born in 1852 and the birth was recorded as illegitimate; she died in 1860 at the age of 8. Their son, Johan Anton Grue was born in 1860 (records show his birth was legitimate), but only lived for 10 months, dying in Jan of 1861. Trine died in May of 1860, so it is likely she died due to complications from the birth of Jonas. I could not find the death record for Trine, but her date of death is recorded on the record of burial for their son, Johan Anton Grue.

In the 1865 Norway Census, Jon Jonsen Grue (John J Grue) is recorded living in Kristiansund with his occupation listed as foreman or supervisor - the records says on or at Pakhuss. It is not clear what is meant by Pakhuss, but it likely means packing house, likely for fish. Kristiansund was well known to be the center of large exports of dried and salted cod in the late 1700's and likely into the 1800's. Jon Jonsen is also listed as a widower in the 1865 Census.

On 6 Jul 1867, Jon Jonsen Grue was married a second time to Karen Persdatter Svorkås (1832-1905) at Kristiansund. Karen was born at Orkdal in Sør Trøndelag. Jon and Karen had 3 children. Johan Carl Magnus Grue was born in Kristiansund on 9 Apr 1868; he died at the age of 5, on 17 Apr 1873. Agathe Jonsdtr Grue was born on 19 Jun 1870 in Kristiansund. She died on 3 June 1921 at Dade County, Florida, United States (see her file for her Biographical Sketch). Jon's third child was Reinhardt Jonsen Grue and he was born in Kristiansund on 16 Jun 1872. However, I haven't found any record of his death. I also have not found any other information on Reinhardt - he is not recorded in the 1900 Norway Census. I have assumed he died as a child, but as indicated above, many of the Norway Parish Registers for Kristiansund had been damaged by fire.

On 12 Mar 1876, Jon Jonsen Grue died; he was buried on 12 of May at Edøy Parish, Møre og Romsdal. Although the handwriting is quited difficult to read, the death/burial records shows a residence of Skarpsund - Skarpsundet is likely a farm or rural community and is situated on the island of Smøla (now referred to as a municipality), about 100 kms or so from Kristiansund. It is likely Jon had a cabin or hut at Skarpsundet, but his family lived in Kristiansund. According to Thoralf Grue (Klokkervang), Jon Jonsen had died at sea during a business trip.

The 1900 Norway Census shows that Karen Grue was living in Kristiansund and was a widow. She died in Kristiansund in 1905. The 1885 Census for Kristiansund record Karen and daughter Agathe.

2. Klokkervang, page 56 [ basic translation by Rueben D Grue ]

"He later lived as a trading agent for merchant Borthen in Kristiansund, on Smøken and during a business journey, he perished at sea." "He was 2 times married. In the first marriage all the children died. By another marriage there was a girl name Agate who married a carpenter and traveled to America, where they have the good comment / commentary about him."

+++ note: by 1742 Kristiansund area was known as the largest exporter of clipfish (dried and salted cod) exporting mainly to Mediterranian countries - this continued thoughout the 17th and 18th centuries. (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kristiansund)

b. Ancestry.com - Nils Oliver Botten family Tree; BUT no sources given -- see 'to do list'

- Jon born 1822 at Klokkervang

- Jon Jonsen Grue marriage #1 to Thrine Margarethe who died in 1860 (death not recorded, 1860-1861, Edøy parish*); 2 children Johan Olaf Johnsen, died in 1863) BUT dates do not correspond to the parish records - I have concluded that the dates and names in the Norway Parish Records are likely to be more accurate

[ 23 Mar 2013 ]

Anna Johnsdtr born 1852 and died 1855 [ 17 Mar 2013 NOTE: Kristiansund Ministerialboks (death records) have fire damage so some parts, mainly the bottom 1/4 of the pages are mostly missing;; birth pages have more damage
-- birth - Anna isn't clear, but likely; middle name, Sophie, is clear; parents are clear - John Johnsen Grue and Trina Margrethe Olausdtr Vigen [??]; difficult to make out, but it appears that she is recorded as ugaete [sp ?] or illegimate
-- death, 6 May 1860 - Kristiansund Ministerialbok - 1855-1865; p 35 --- this is more likely to be correct that the data from Nils Oliver Boten family tree

--- Johan - 1860 - Ministerialbok records birth and death and name as Johan Anton - parents John Johnsen Grue and Trine Margrethe; due to some fire damage the actual date of birth on the birth record isn't there but is recorded on the death/burial record; it appears that he was born legitimate

--- Trine's death in 1860 - recorded with on the death record for Johan, but she isn't recorded on the death pages - BUT on page 34, 2-3 lines are 'burned"

--- John and Trine's marriage - can't find a marriage record (Kristiansund), 1848-1861, so likely reason is the fire damage to the parish registers

- marriage #2 to Karen Pedersdtr Svorkås (born 1831, died 1905; 3 children, Johan Carl Magnus, born 1868 and died 1874 (birth and death in Skarpsundet Smøla, Norway is not recorded 1873-1874 Edøy parish*, but are recorded at Kristiansund) ; Agathe Jonsdtr born 1870, death in USA; Rienhart Johnsen, born 1871 (birth and death in Skarpsundet Smøla, Norway; birth not recorded 1870-1872, Edøy parish* ??) * 7 Dec 2012 -- couldn't find on scan on registers, so either the family was living someplace else or the dates indicated are not correct

-- BUT, Jon's death is recorded in Edøy, but children Johan Carl, Agathe and Reinhardt's birth in Kristiansund; so again the Norway Parish Records are likely to be more accurate
-- it is possible the family moved here after the birth of the children, or more likely, Jon had a small place on Skarpsundet, but the family lived in Kristiansund

--- Skarpsundet is likely a farm or rural community on the island of Smøla (now referred to as a municipality), about 100 kms or so from Kristiansund, Møre og Romsdal, with Hopen the adminstrative center; it was formed in 1960 from the merger of muncipalities of Edøy, Brattvær, and Hopen (Norway Parish Registers record these as separate sogns or parishes)

3. Bygdebok for Os, p 180

- Trading agent/assignee [ handelsfullmektig ] in Kristiansund; left in 1843 to Molde

3. Death - Digitalarkivet

- residence at death - Skar ..... ? [Skarpsund?]; gives an 'occupation', but I can't make it out; also in comments .... ??? something .... from Christiansund

4. 1865 Norway Census

farm # 394, Street Søgaden, Christiansund

- John J Grue, husfader (the father of the house or the owner of the house); occupation - formand paa et Pakhuss (foreman or supervisor on Pakhuss - the name of company? or packing house -- huss/hus meaning house; pak/pakke meaning pack); martial status - 'e', stands for widower [ widow from his 1st marriage; married Karen in 1867 and then had three more children ]
age 43 <1822> born in Tolgen parish
- Siri Englesdtr. Vigen, husholderske (housekeeper), age 65, born in Ørkdalen
- Sivrine B. Vigen, sypige (seamstress), age 28, born in Christiansund; logerende (lodger)
- Johana Jensdtr. Ørgevig, frit Verelse (free room), age 70, born in Christiansund ; under the column Farmer it is noted Ørgesvigs enken, so it is likely that John is staying the farm/house (likely in the town of Christiansund) of the Johana, a widow of Ørge

5. 1900 Norway Census [ 4 Dec 2012 ]

- Karen Grue [Jon's wife], born 1832 Ørkedalen, living at Kristiansund on 394 Hollahaugen St (apartment?); farm house Vaaningshus
- widow, Bondelogi ? (bonde usually means farmer or owner of a farm; logi ? logere - stands for lodge ???0;
** 1885 Norway Census

6. Karen's death:

Kristiansund Ministerialbok, 1903-1916, Døde, 1905 year, line 102

Karen Grue, enke, died 8 Nov 1905; residence Hollahaugen; birth 2 Nov 1832
- something is written underneath the name, and in the 6th column, but I can't make it out

7. general - see, http://www.pergjendem.com/?p=257; Historieportal, Per Gjendem

- brief discussion about the author's great grandpa "Skole-Neils" Pedersen Y Hoem, 'got his exam' at Proste Seminarium in Molde in 1841. This 'strictly religious school' was started in 1837 by Peter Vogelius Deinboll. .... Cand Theol (likely meaning Theological Candidate) Peter Ulrich Stabell and church aidee Jon Grue were regular teachers.
--- I'm assuming that this refers to Jon Jonsen Grue (1783-1863), but it doesn't seem right since Jon Jonsen Grue was at Os-Tolga and on the farm Klokkervang and had a number of children. There could be a mistake and this was meant to be Christen Jonsen Grue, which would make more sense, but
--- it could also refer to Jon Simensen Grue, born 1804, since he had been in Molde for a bit teaching his uncle's children

- see, http://www.pergjendem.com/?p=3109
- regarding a bapitism - witness... Klokker Grue, 1 Jan 1829 ??? -- likely Christian Jonsen Grue

-- there is another report of a baptism in Molde, with a witness by Klokker Grue; date of 1848 1454,4037
