There are at least 2 people named Karin Staffansdotter born in Frysände parish. One was born on 16 Mar 1713 and her parents were parents Staffan Persson and Karin Mårtensdotter from Multtjärn. Many other family researchers and Family Trees have recorded this person as a relation, my 5th great-grandmother and the 3rd great-grandmother of my Gramma Grue, Avey Rangborg Skaret. These include Family Trees on Familysearch and Ancestry FT such as the 'Mill släktträd owner milljanderberg," and other family researchers such as, Kenneth Bergman and a few family trees on Disbyt, and Manuel Aguilar Henriksson). In fact in June 2015, I first recorded this Karin Staffansdotter as my "5th great grandmother" who was married to Anders Andersson (b 1715), based on the initial information from the Mill släktträd FT on Ancestry).

BUT I was mistaken, as were others.

My 5th great grandmother was Karin Staffansdotter and she was born on 6 Dec 1709. Her parents were Staffan Bengtsson and Ingeborg Markusdotter from Rattsjöberg in Fryksände parish. I carefully reviewed the household records starting in Frysände parish and later in Östmark parish and I followed the family of Anders Andersson (b 1715) although his birth in the parish is most often recorded as 1714, and Karin Staffansdotter's birth is most often recorded as 1708. In the Östmark parish household record (AI:1 (1773-1778) Page 42 at Långerud) she is recorded with her husband, Anders Andersson (b 1715). Her birth is noted as 1708 then to the left in handwriting that is somewhat faded, "död 1774". Her death/burial record from 1774 says that she died at age 70, and this would mean her birth around 1704, but the age at death is likely not correct (see, Östmark deaths/burials (S) CI:1 (1765-1818) Image 178 / Page 363, no 20). The reason I think the age is not correct is that the Fryksände birth/baptism records her birth as 6 Dec 1709. This date is likely the most accurate since it would have been recorded close to the time of the actual event [see, CI:1 (1707-1732) Image 24 / Page 39 no 57].

The church records result in a couple of discrepancies. Her birth is recorded as 1708 in the household records, but birth is actually in 1709. Her death record records her age at death as 70 years, with her birth then being around 1704. These discrepancies cannot be easily explained, other that the priest likely guessed her age at her death. From my review of many household records, I have seen in a number of situations that the year of birth is about 1 year or so off of the actual birth given in the birth and baptism records (and other researchers have noted this type of discrepancy in the household records).


Is there any other evidence that would support Karin Staffansdotter birth as 6 Dec 1709?

There are 2 family trees (FT) on Disbyt that records Karin Staffansdotter was born in 1709 and married to Anders Andersson b 1715. These 2 FTs are: Roger Olof Holmstrand, id 5430 [although no longer active]; and, Anders Nyström, id 21185 and updated on 23 Feb 2016. Both of these FTs record information on their children that corresponds to the Fryksände parish records. However, both of these Disbyt FTs (family trees) say that she was also married a second time in 1753. This is cannot be correct, since the household records for Östmark parish note that she and Anders Andersson are recorded together (he is also recorded as "Soldator" Anders Mark, a soldier name) until she died 1774. In fact, the person named Karin Staffansdotter with a second marriage mentioned in these Disbyt FT was born 1730 (see notes on point 2 below).

My 5th great grandmother Karin Staffansdotter, born 1709, had at least 4 siblings (Bengt Staffansson, b 18 Jun 1711; Markus Staffansson, b 1 Apr 1713; Henrik Staffansson, b 2 Sep 1715; Maria Staffansson, b 2 Apr 1718). A geni.com FT records a person named Matthes Staffansson born 1699 as an older brother, but I have not been able to verify this (see link below). This geni.com FTrecords Karin Staffansdotter's birth as 6 Sep 1709 (see point 3 below). However, the birth/baptism clearly notes birth and baptism was in Dec 1709.

According to the geni.com FT (see point 3 for link to this FT), Staffan Bengtsson (Karin's father) also is known with a Finnish family Name of "Manninen" (Roger Olof Holmstrand, no longer active) and Anders Nyström FTs on Disbyt also uses this Finnish family name (see below, and also records ancestors). It should be noted that the geni.com FT does not record a marriage or descendants for Karin Staffansdotter born 1709.

Both the geni.com FT and the 2 Disbyt FTs noted above, record 'our' Karin Staffansdotter's (1709-1774) father's ancestors. The earliest ancestor is Hindrik Larsson (Manninen), b abt 1590 at the farm Djuprämmen, Rämmen parish, Värmland and he died about 1638 at Fryksände parish [see his page on my Legacy database]. The geni.com FT has a comment, "... occupied and built Djuprämmen ". [the earliest household records for Rämmen parish is 1785]. Hindrik Larsson (1590-1638) was married to Kerstin Bengtsdotter (1600-1669) and they had at least four children: Jöns Hindriksson (1629 - ?); Henrik Hindriksson (1630 - ?); Marit Hindriksdotter (1631 - ?); and 'our' Bengt Hindriksson (1628-1690)

Bengt Hindriksson's efternamn or patronymic name was also spelled Henriksson and it appears that it is this spelling that continued to be used most often in the parish registers. Bengt Henriksson was born about 1628 at Djuprämmen, Rämmen parish in Värmland and he died about 1690 at Rattsjöberg, Fryksände, Värmland. Note that at Frysände parish, the earliest birth records start at 1707 and death/burial records also in 1707, although the transcribed records has a few names from the village of Bada, from 1696-1706. The geni.com FT also makes a comment on Bengt Henriksson's page that says, "In mantal i Rattsjöberg 1676-1689". I have looked at the taxation records (Mantalslängder collection at the Swedish archives, Riksarkivet and on Arkivdigital) but the handwriting is very difficult to make out and so I can't verify this date.

The earliest household record book for Fryksände parish is for the year 1698 (vol AI:1), but the book is severely damaged. Additionally it only records names and sometimes only a given name with no other identifying information such as a birth year. I have reviewed these pages, but could not find any of the family names (as with most of the early parish books, reading the handwriting is a challenge). The next couple of volumes only record some names and some place names, but I have not found any record of Karin, her parents or her siblings. See her husband's research notes - starting with vol AI:4. p 97 (likely) and then vol AI:5, page 83, and they start to record her birth as 1708. The handwriting is quite clear.

Additionally, I am quite sure that Karin Staffansdotter's (b 1709) brother Markus Staffansson and his family, along with her mother Ingeborg and her brother, Hindrik are recorded at Rattsjöberg in the household records for Fryksände parish (AI:4 (1741-1749) Image 130 / Page 251). Her brother Markus and his family is recorded Rattsjöberg or Rattsjöberget (as it is sometimes called) throughout the household records (see his research notes).

Karin Staffansdotter's (1709-1774) mother was Ingeborg Markusdotter. Her death/burial record is: Fryksände (S) CI:2 (1733-1749) Image 162 / Page 311. She died on 13 Feb 1748 at the age of 63, meaning her birth would be about 1685.

Other evidence: the only evidence that I found for the person named Karin Staffansdotter born 1713 is in the birth/baptism. But as I have indicated below (see point 7), it seems that this Karin had likely moved with her parents to Norway.


Conclusion: The most reasonable conclusion after an extensive review, is that My 5th great grandmother was Karin Staffansdotter and she was born on 6 Dec 1709. Her parents were Staffan Bengtsson and Ingeborg Markusdotter from Rattsjöberg in Fryksände parish. Karin Staffansdotter died 10 Jun 1774 at the farm/village of Långerud in Östmark parish.

- there is a marriage of a person name Karin Staffansdotter in 1753 to Henrik Michaelsson or Mickelsson, but this has to be someone else.

- the Fryksände household record [ Fryksände (S) AI:6a (1752-1757) Image 176 / Page 180, Röjdäsen ] records Henrik Michelsson b 1711 and dies 1758; his wife is Karin b 1730 but no efternamn is recorded; a number of his children are recorded and then daugther Marit b 1755 and Per b 1756
- the transcribed birth book records the birth of Maria (or Marit) on 1 May 1755 and then the birth of Per on 1 May 1756, both born at S Röjdäsen and both with parents Henrik Michelsson (Mickelsson) and Karin Staffansdotter.
- Maria's birth/baptism, Fryksände (S) CI:3 (1750-1763) Image 75 / Page 143 no 70; Per's birth/baptism; Fryksände (S) CI:3 (1750-1763) Image 89 / Page 171, no 64;
- the Fryksände household record, AI:7 page 99 for S Röjdäsen records Henrik Michelsson b 1711 dies 1758, wife Karin b 1730 and a number of children; and then there is a reference to page 253 and below that number is 254; so page 254 is another page for S Röjdäsen and at the top of this page is Michel Henriksson b 1737 - he is the eldest son of Henrik Michelsson and his first wife; he is married with a couple of children and a couple of his siblings are recorded.
- then on line 18 on page 254, is Johan Johansson Bork b 1731 and wife Karin b 1730 and then a daughter Karin b 1760 and son Per b 1756; is this Karin Staffansdotter b 1730 ??? --- just below the number "254" (hard to read) move to Me.....? ; I used Slaktdata.org - Släktdata [ https://www.slaktdata.org/index.php/regsearch ] website and searched "Per Johansson" and found a death record, died 19 Apr 1757 at Mellmarkskogen at age of 6 ve (6 weeks) ; however, I can't find a placement for Mellmarkskogen in household records [AI:7 (1757-1765)] or under the pages under Mellmark


--- the place name of Röjdåsen is not recorded in the Fryksände parish records from 1764 to 1772 and then in 1773 the place name is in the first volume for Östmark (AI:1, 1773-1778) - on page 34, Michel Henriksson (b 1737) family is recorded, but Karin Staffansdotter b 1730 is not recorded; -- he is likely the son of
a daugther, Karin Johansdotter, was born 25 May 1760 and another daughter, Annika, is recorded as born on 15 Jan 1764, both born at S Röjdåsen - see transcribed births at Fryksände website, but I haven't found anything further

Thus, I haven't been able to follow this family any further, but at any rate, we have this Karin Staffansdotter as being born in 1730 (and married in 1753 to Henrik Michelsson b 1711) and thus CANNOT be the the same.

BUT, searching by parents name, the next children, all born at Mången:
- Elisabet b 2 Jan 1733, Kerstin b 2 Jun 1734; Annika b 15 Mar 1736; Henrik b 20 Feb 1742; Mårten b 5 Dec 1742; Gertrud b 1 Nov 1745

Either the parents of the named Karin Staffansdotter b 1713 are not the same as the other children starting with Elisabet b 1733(BUT why the 20 year gap?) OR the name of the parents for Karin b 1713 are wrong (although the actual birth book (CI:1) records those names]

Also: the marriage record for Staffan Persson and Karin Mårtensdotter is recorded as 7 Jun 1731

Also: there is no record in the transcribed death book for Staffan Persson or Karin Mårtensdotter, and none of the deaths noted at either Multtjärn or Mången

- this FT only records one child: Per (Peder) Steffansson born 1701 at Multtjärn and died 1748 at otneberget, Grue Finnskog, Grue, Hedmark, Norway

Thus, it is likely the people named Staffan Persson and Karin Mårtensdotter and recorded as the parents of Karin Staffansdotter born 1713, had moved to Norway, perhaps to their son Per. However, the above FT on geni.com does not make mention of daughter Karin born in 1713, so it is a bit harder to conclude if this Karin Staffansdotter also moved to Norway but it is likely. I have not found in any Swedish records anything about Karin Staffansdotter b 1713.

Reviewing "Skogsfinska Släktnamn" by Niclas Persson and ....., the FFN of Navilainen (also considered, Nauualainen) is mostly used in Norway, although there are some from South Finnskog in Väarmland. There is an entry for Anders Marksson Nauualainen at Rattsjöberg in 1725.

The Staffan Persson family in Mången is likely a totally different family from the family of Karin Stafffansdotter b 1713 ⁵⁷³⁷

Karin married Anders Andersson, son of Anders Andersson and Karin Larsdotter, on 18 Jan 1736 in Fryksände, Värmland län, Sweden.⁵⁷³³ (Anders Andersson was born on 10 May 1715 in Fryksände, Värmland län, Sweden ^5338,5734, baptized on 15 May 1715 in Fryksände, Värmland län, Sweden ⁵⁷³⁴ and died between 1787 and 1810 in Fryksände, Värmland län, Sweden.)
