Rangela Andersdotter

Summary

As I have indicated in the Legacy database, Rangela Andersdotter was born on 5 January 1739. She was married to Samuel Larsson Kahrinen (some researchers use the Finnish Family Name [FFN]) although the correct spelling is likely Karhinen. They had at least 4 children, with 2 children named Karin Samuelsdotter. It is unusual for two children to have the same given name, although sometimes it occurs when a younger child died and then another child is given the name of the child who died. However there is no record of the death of a person named Karin Samuelsdotter (between 1767 and 1774). The other possible circumstance is when the parents follow a more traditional naming practice or custom. That is, the first daughter is named after the mother's mother - in this case, Rangela Andersdotter's mother was Karin (Staffansdotter); the first son named after the father's father. The second daughter was named after the father's mother. I haven't found Samuel Larsson's parents (no child Samuel born according to transcribed births), but if they followed a very traditional pattern, then her given name would also be Karin. Thus Rangela's first daugther was named Karin (b 1767) and the second daughter named Karin (b 1774). In Norway and Sweden sometimes the first child is known as the "elder' and the younger is known as "the younger".

Since both daughters had the given name of Karin, there has been a great deal of confusion for me and for other family researchers. But by carefully following the Household Records (see below for details) we can conclude the following about their children:

Karin Samuelsotter, b 1767 - she is recorded as being born in 1767 with the first 2 volumes (Östmark, AI:1 and AI:2) for the years 1773-1787. Then in volume 3 (AI:3, 1788-1793) she is recorded with a birth year of 1771 (along with Karin b 1774). But then in the next volume (AI:4, 1794-1799), she is recorded with the birth year as 1767 (the image looks like the priest may have written something first, and then over that in darker ink is the year 1767, and the birth year of 1767 is recorded in the remaining books. Following her and her family through the years, we can see that she was married twice. Her first husband (Erik Jansson) died in 1806 and about a year later she married Anders Jönsson. Most researchers with the exception of Kenneth Bergman record his name as 'Anders Jansson', but in the records the second vowel is more like the letter 'o' than the letter 'a'. Karin had lived most of the time at Käcktorp which is about 11 kms north of the village/farms of Östmark. She died on 20 May 1847 at Käcktorp at the age of 80 years.

Karin Samuelsdotter, b 1774. She is recorded in the first 4 volumes (from 1773-1799). Then in volume AI:5 (1800-1806) she is recorded with her parents, at least to the year 1801, when it appears that in the following years she has been absent (from the examination and communion). She is not recorded in the next volume (AI:6, 1806-1811). There is no death/burial record. I have not found any other evidence or information on her. She likely moved to some other parish or even possibly to Norway.

Rangela Samuelsdotter, 1780 - see her page for research notes. Rangela was also known as Ragnhild. She was married twice. Rangela's first husband died in 1830 and at that time they had 3 younger children. In 1831 she married again but did not have any other children.

Kenneth Bergman records the name Samuel Larsson with the Finnish Family name of 'Kahrinen', but likely Karhinen. He also records daughter Karin Samuelsdotter b 1767 with 2 marriages, but also notes the other children (including the birth in 1771 of Karin Samuelsdotter - see above. Kenneth Bergman does not include other descendants nor does he provide any other information.

[Per-Erik Svensson, updated 19 Feb 2018]. This FT does not record Rangela Andersdotter (b 1739) but only records the name of her husband, Samuel Larsson who was the father of Lars Samuelsson Öijenäs - see Lars Samuelsson's research notes (b 1770).

c. Disbyt FT's. There some FT's on Disbyt, but as I indicated above in the summary, a couple of them do NOT record the 'right' Karin Samuelsdotter b 1767.

d. FamilySearch. There is one FT (id, G94W-JMB) with owner Manuel Aguilar Hendrickson, 18 Apr 2019. However, Manuel does not record Rangela Andersson's husband or children.

I have recorded Samuel Larsson birth as 1726, his marriage in 1766, and the birth of the two youngest children based on the household records from Östmark parish books.

NOTE: I have not found a "Rösberget" in the Frysände parish household records
- I have reviewed the household records for Frysände parish, volume AI:8, 1764-1768: the handwriting is quite legible, but I could not find Samuel Larsson b 1726 or Rangela Andersdotter b 1739 recorded [reviewed 2 Mar 2019], and they are not recorded under the farm/village of Mellmark
- Samuel Larsson b 1726 is NOT recorded in the transcribed Frysände birth book
- I could NOT find a marriage record for them in 1766 in the Frysände marriage book, but the handwriting is quite difficult to read; marriage of 1766 is recorded based on other researchers and that the stated birth of Karin and Lars
- I could NOT find the births of Karin b 1767 or Lars b 1769 or 1770 Frysände

A possible conclusion is that Rangela b 1739 and Samuel Larsson b 1726 were living in another parish during the years 1766-1773. Of course it is possible that they were not recorded, but I don't know a reason for that. From a general google search for the place name of Rösberget is in the parish of Malung, Kopparberg county. Rösberget is about 90 kms south and east of Östmark. However there is no evidence that they were living there.


NOTE: in the Östmark household records vol AI:13 (page 436, Käcktorp), Samuel Larsson (b 1726) and Rangela Andersdotter's (b 1739) oldest daughter, Karin Samuelsdotter (b 1767) is recorded with her 2nd husband, Anders Jönsson (b 1777) and in this volume the priest had recorded the birth year and the place of birth. On page 436, Karin Samuelsdotter's birth is recorded as 1767 at Klåggestranden. The Östmark parish birth book's (CI:1, 1765-1818) first pages are somewhat damaged and on page 5 on the right side is 1767 but starts with line or number 30 with births starting in Jul 1767. On the left side of page 5 the births are from the year 1766 and the last visible line or number is '39', about mid-page. It seems that the first 6 months of births for the year 1767 are missing. Karin Samuelsdotter is not recorded for the remaining years. Also it should be noted that the first Östmark parish household record starts in 1773, but Östmark farm/village and surrounding areas are last recorded in the Fryskände Household records from 1764-1768 (AI:8) and so there is a gap of about 5 years from 1769-1772. There is placename of Klåggestranden in Fryksände records for volume AI:8 but Karin Samuelsdotter is not recorded. In the next Fryksände record volume of AI:9a or 9b, Klåggestranden is not recorded in the register.

Klåggestranden is noted in the earlist Östmark parish household record (AI:1, 1773-1778), but the farmily is at Rösberg (see below).

The most likely conclusion is that Samuel Larsson (b 1726) and Rangela Andersdotter's (b 1739) were living at Klåggestranden, at least for a few years between 1769-1772, the missing years for records.
