Summary: [written by Rueben Grue, 19 Jul 2019. Copywrite. All rights Reserved]

Markus Olofsson (b abt 1638) was likely born at the farm/village of Vitsand or sometimes called Vitsanden. Vitsand is about 30 kms or so east of the town of Östmark. Vitsand became a separate parish around 1922; prior to this, the area was under Östmark and even earlier under Fryksände parish.

Markus Olofsson's father was Olof Nilsson (birth/death uncertain, but possibly around 1610), but according the Mantalsländger (taxation records), Olof Nilsson was lived at Vitsand as early as 1653, although he likely was there earlier. Olof Nilsson was likely married to Karin Benalsdotter, but date of birth/death or location is unknown.

Olof Nilsson's father was likely Nils Jönsson and again his birth and death are not known, although one FT (see point 3) records birth about 1580 and death about 1660. He most likely was from Överbyn [about 7-8 kms south of Vitsand]. His name is mentioned as early as 1634, according to some earlier court records (see Family Tree researcher, Bo Brunzell's page for him). Nil Jönsson had started to clear some of the land in the area of Vitsand sometime after 1634, but it wasn't until his son (Olof Nilsson) moved to Vitsand that some buildings were constructed. Olof Nilsson had at least one son, Markus Olofsson b 1638.

Markus Olofsson (b 1638) was married sometime prior to 1665 to Karin Jönsdotter b abt 1648 at the farm/village of Oleby in Fryksände parish [Oleby is about 25 kms south of Vitsand, next to Torsby]. Her father (Jöns Bondesson, died abt 1653) and grandfather (Bonde Nilsson, died abt 1610) who was from the farm/village of Utterbyn, about 20 kms south of Vitsand.

Markus Olofsson (b 1638) and Karin Jönsdotter (b 1648) had 9 children. Likely they lived most of their lives at the farm/village of Vitsand. All of the children were born there. I have recorded the children's names and if they were married, but and for some, I have reviewed and noted under the 'research notes', information about them through the parish records [For the most part, I have relied on the information from Bo Brunzell or from Kenneth Bergman].

NOTE: I have NOT found a Finnish Family Name associated with Markus Olofsson or his ancestors/descendants. It is likely that he did not descend from Finnish ancestors. His family was mostly likely "native Swedish" although I do not have any direct evidence of this.

NOTE: Bo Brunzell and other FT researchers often use the current parish for births/deaths, etc, but at this time frame, all of the areas were under the records for Fryksände parish. I have chosen to record on my Legacy database the Fryksände parish and when appropriate in the source citation, the farm/village. On the research notes for individuals, I usually record the the current parish and as much as possible the farm/village that they lived at

Bo Brunzell , id 26229, update: 1 Jun 2017 [ http://www.brunzell.org/Bosses/000/004/661.htm ]
- website is easier to nagivate

- includes some notes for Markus Olofsson (b 1638), his father Olof Nilsson, and Olof's father Nils Jönsson
- also shows Fryksände parish Household record, AI:1, page 15 and notes: "The attendant provides scant information about the family": he notes
Markus Husb.
Karin Hustrun.
Benard. Brodern.
Jöns sonen.
Ingr˙ dott.
Kierstin dott.
- when I look on Arkivdigital AI:1, page 15, the 1st side has a lot of damage and I can't make out the names above; the 2nd side is better, but I still can't make out the names.

from the court records: and on Bo Brunzell's page for Olof Nilsson
1649, 38. Since Nils Jönsson in Överbyn did not put any tennant (åbo) in the cottage on Vitsand, when
the Finn was worked there, but he allowed his son Olof Nilsson to move there. Olof (Nilsson) who has been there for 2 years, should be allowed to keep it.

1676, 21. Olof Nilsson in Vitsand is recommended to acquired by his son Per Olofsson, who is thought to have (suspected) fallen an elk. (See son Per Olofsson).

A review of the mantle for Vitsand in Fryksände gave the following results, Vitsand is listed for the first time in the mantle in 1653. The spelling on the new site varies but:
Olof/Oluf Nilsson: 1653, 1656, 1657, 1658, 1661, 1663
Markus Olofsson: 1664

there is no direct link; at start: search Markusdotter, Ingeborg]
- his website has more information - I there is a direct link so go to start, search for Markusdotter, Ingeborg 1685-1748

- Kenneth Bergman has a post on Anbytarforum, 31 Mar 2013. He mentions Karin Benalsdotter but no birth/death. He suggests that she was the mother of Karin Olofsdotter b abt 1655 at Vitsand, and this Karin Olofsdotter was married to Halsten Jönsson b abt 1655 and who died 2 Jan 1727. This Karin Ololfsdotter had a daughter named, Elin Halstensdotter (b abt 1688 and died 26 of Apr 1741 at Oleby.
- Kenneth Bergman does not note in this post that Karin Benalsdotter was married to Olof Nilsson from Vitsand
