bullet  Research Notes:

1. Edmonton Journal - 18 Dec 2008 - Leila's obit
- 4 Nov 2014 - Norman's obit (not a lot of new information)

Norman was born in 1920; he was about 5 years younger than my dad. I don't know what year the photo (attached to his obit) was taken, but probably at least 10-15 years ago. The photo reminds me so much of him. Unfortunately he probably had some Alzheimer's, probably about for the last 5 years. In 2011 when I was at David's we visited with Gerry and Dan (my cousins) for a bit - they said that when they went to see their dad, most of the time Norman didn't know who they were, but a couple times, he seemed to remember something; he was at a nursing home, and not able to do much. Barbara had also told me that he wasn't well and didn't remember much (she also said that for her mom's memory was going before she died and she may have Alzheimer's or at least an early type).

I remember Norman as always fit and muscular, as if he had worked out in a gym; off the farm, he was always active, camping, hunting and hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter, many times down-hill at Banff. As a kid, we had spent a lot of time at Norman's - they lived about 8-9 kms (abt 5 miles) from us.

Dad and Norman did a lot of farming together, at least all the harvest work - Norman coming to our place and helping out; Dad going to Norman's. We always knew when it was close to harvest, since Norman was at our place alot, working and repairing the old Massey Harris combine - that combine broke down so many times during harvest, even though Norman and Dad spent hours repairing it before combining (this would have been in the middle 1950's). My brother Glen said that he thinks that Dad and Norman had bought this new in the late 1940's or early 1950's; but it still broke down a lot [Gerry has said that too]. Glen said that the motor and the capacity of the 'grain drumb' was too small, and so the driver of the tractor had to go very, very slow.

2. Hay Lakes history book, page 427 (likely submitted by Leila)

- Norman returned 13 Sept 1945 from oversears
- spring 1946, he purchased his dad's farm - through Veterans Land Act

-- from TheCanadianEncyclopedia.com -- Veterans' Land Act, passed 20 July 1942, following a Canadian tradition dating from the 17th century of settling ex-soldiers on the land. With only a small down payment, ex-servicemen could purchase land with the help of a government loan; additional funds were available for livestock and equipment. Repayment terms allowed settlers time to re-establish themselves without incurring heavy financial obligations.
