Daniel Norman Grue
- Born: 10 Feb 1959, Camrose, Alberta, Canada 268
- Died: 19 Aug 2024, Camrose, Alberta, Canada at age 65
Research Notes:
Summary: Dan was my 1st cousin. His dad Norman was my dad's brother. When I was young, our family and Norman's were together a lot. Dad and Norman shared some farm equipment together, most significantly the combine. The Massey Harris combine was forever breaking down, and many times Norman would come to our place and be working on repairs for the combine, particularly before the fall harvest.
Dan was younger than me by about 8.5 years [8 yrs, 6 mos, and 21 days]. Since he was younger, I don't remember being with him very much. Of course Barbara was the same age as me, and Audrey was about a year younger, and so I was with them alot. Gerry was about a year younger than David and David and Gerry were good friends over the years. Of course I knew Dan [and Doug about 4 yrs younger than Dan], but I can't say that we hung around much, even when he was older.
I believe that Dan had trained as an electrician, but I don't know if he had his journeyman papers. I remember him telling me that he would do a lot of work with a company that had contracts for hotel - I think it was in 2011 that he said he was working on a new hotel at Moosomen, SK.
Some time in the early to mid 2000s, he had built a cabin in the Battle River valley, about a half an hour east of Camrose. In early Sept 2011, David and I went out to his place. His cabin is very well built and I understand he did most of the work. His place was also was also completely "off the grid". He had built/installed solar panels for electricity and had a wood stove in the main room. I think he had a outdoor toilet, but if I remember he had built/rigged up a shower.
Dan was also an exceptional photographer. He took many pictures of wildlife that he saw in the valley, and would often lay or sit and wait for them to appear. He also used his canoe to paddle up and down the Battle River. When he started a Facebook page, he posted many of his photos, but he probably has thousand more.
Gerry had contacted Doreen and she then called me. I also sent an email to Barb. From what I understand Gerry one day in the week of Aug 11, had gone to Dan's to visit, but found that he had died inside the cabin. Apparently Dan had a heart attack.
Dan was not married and he did not have children. Gerry had mentioned and Barb had written "we are having a private Norman Grue gathering at his cabin and spread his ashes in the beautiful valley he loved".
Note: Dan's obit is posted on the Burgar Home Funeral website, along with a fairly current photo. I have recorded the place of death as Camrose, although this is not strictly correct. As indicated, I am not sure of the exact location of his cabin, so in the meantime I will use Camrose.
