b. Why did Ole come to Armena?
It is not clear or known why he chose Armena. The Canadian West was still in the early stages of early homestead in 1900, so how did he know to come to Armena, as opposed to other places in AB or SK or ? ... where many homesteads were avaible ?? Often, it is common that an emigrant would go to an area where they knew someone, but who would have been in Armena / Camrose area prior to 1900 that Ole would have known.

Note: Ole Skaret had the SE¼ of Sec 18, SW¼ and SE¼ of Sec 17. The NW¼ of 17 was purchased from CPR by Nils Dahl, Lars Scotvold, and Karl Anderson, on 16 Dec 1901. Nils Dahl had the homestead on NE¼ of Sec 18 (1904) - this is the home quarter of my Dad and where I grew up The NE¼ of 17 was purchased from CPR by Thore Throndson, 23 Dec 1901; Anton Throndson, homestead SW¼ of Sec 28 and Thore Throndson homestead NE¼ of Sec 28 The SW¼ of 20 was the homestead of Einar Broen, son of Christian O Broen. Tony (Anton) Broen was a brother of Einare and at some point purchased and build the buildings, etc. Christian Broen homesteaded the SW¼ of Sec 24, although initial homestead was entered by P Skalin. Thore S Grue purchased from HBC - SE¼ and north half of NE¼ and NW¼ of Sec 8 - home of Nels Grue in the 1950s. Across the road was Fridhem Church
See Alberta Twp Map from AB Provincial Archives; Map from 17 Feb 1894 compiled from land surveys - the 'red handwriting of names' would have been done at a later time, but the map does not note this, possibly about 1905-1906 since the names of homesteaders etc are noted; there are a number of maps - some showing water, trails, and creeks, etc - #7 and #8 show a branch of Embrass River cutting through section 18 (long gone in 1940s to 1960s) and to the east of Ole Skaret, "Hilly country covered with brulé [French for burnt] and and dense growth of Jackpine" - across a part of the map [#1 and others], "undulating country scattered with bluffs of small popular and williows"

- note O.O Skaret homestead on SE¼ of Sec 18 in Red ink, probably around 1905-1906; then on the eastern part of sec 17 is a line that I believe reads, "Beaver Lake Trail" - this would be a likely link to the Bardo Community. Just below Ole's name there is a darker line that seems to follow twp road 482 and then moves north at SW¼ of sec 16 [E Seversen]. I can't really make out the what the road/trail is called

- born in Norway; married in 1889; - in 1896, Ole, Kristina and two children emigrated to the US; in 1901 to Canada - surviving - his wife, and children, Mrs Lars Grue (Avey) of Hay Lakes, Mrs Anton Throndson (Mary) of Armena, Mrs Gust Ostrem (Ragnhild) of Preeceville, SK, Mrs Richard Erickson (Olga), Armena, Raymond and Richard (farming the home place)

12. The Centennial Reuion and Memoirs of the Skaret Family, 1967
- Ole left Sweden/Norway in 1892, at age 23 - left his family - landed in the eastern US - traveled by rail and wagon - came to Harvey, ND where he worked as a farm hand - about 2 years later <1894> his family came - three children were born in ND - Mary, Arthur Ole, and William - early in the spring of 1901, emigrated to Canada - homestead - the first land he ever owned [ ? but he received patent on the homestead land in ND]
13. the Grambo book, p 181-185 - sometime before 1889 he went Rulbo in Hälsingland [ province; Gälveborg is the county * ] - married in 1889 - in 1892, Ole left for America; landed in the eastern USA and ended up in Harvey, ND - worked on a farm; spent his first winter in America in a "lumber-forest" [ not clear where this would be - likely in nothern parts of MN ? ] - Kristina and the children arrived in 1893
** this area is near Lös, Sweden - about 20 kms to the east ;; Lös is about 200 kms to west of Ljørdalen or Skåret Norway (using today's roads from googlemaps) ;; thus, Ole would have walked over mountains and rough terrain, but I suppose some type of path or trail of some sort - it would have taken about 1 week to walk, assuming about 30 kms per day. [ 24 Mar 2015 ]
14. Emigration ?? 1892 or 1893 ??
- there is conflicting data - Memoirs of ... and the Grambo book indicate 1892 is when Ole left, but the 1900 US Census says 1893 (Canada census of course only records entry to Canada)
- Emigrants from Trondhiem - NOT Confirmed ... .... not enough identifying info. .... remember ... from Trondheim did not directly sail across the Atlantic. - Canadian Passenger Lists - NOT Confirmed - arrival 13 Sept 1892; Ole Olsen, age 24, ship Mongolian; it is doubtful this is our Ole - left 14 Sep, arrival 13 Sep [ thus this has to be someone ]
Conclusion: migration - 1892; leaving Trondhiem on 14 Sept 1892; leaving Los in Sweden, 8 Sep 1892

NOTE: no definite conclusion can be made: re, arrival at Quebec or someplace on US Easterm port, --------------------------------------------------
- US Land records and papers
Sweden Church Records
Note: some records record Ole went to Rulbo in Los, Hälsingland: Hälsingland is considered by traditional "province" in Sweden, but these provinces in Sweden had no administrative function, but only of a historical and cultural context; currently Gävleborg County has the municipal administrative function for most of the area of Hälsingland
15. a. Marriage, Vigselbok, Los, Gävleborg, Sweden - marriage date: 19 Jul 1891; "Lysnings dager" [announcement or proclamation on intent to marry): 21-28 Jun 1891 [Ole]; 6 Jul 1891 [Kristina]
- Ole is recorded as Drången [male worker from Grufbyn ] and Kristina is recorded as: Brukaredotteorn [daughter of farmer from Hivåsen]
- marriage of 1891 conflicts with "family records" or family "tradition" that they were married on 19 Jul 1889 (Memiors of the Skaret family, 1967); Grambo book; and obits, although the obits differ - Ole's obit reports marriage in 1889; Kristina's obit, in 1888) and the 50th wedding aniversary, "Mr., Mrs. Ole Skaret Fifty Years Married" reported in the Armena News in The Camrose Canadian, 5 Jul 1939, page 6 col 3 [ 50 years of marriage would put the marriage in Jul 1889 ] - Memiors of the Skaret family, 1967 and in "Grin and Skaret" DVD, 2000 that records marriage on 19 Jul 1889 and that the marriage took place at the home of Torgal Persson (Skaaret). The church books do not record place of marriage, so it is possible that the marriage was at Torgal's home; however, there was a church at Los so I'm not sure why the actual marriage wasn't at the church; the other information in the church record is that the marriage was performed by Olaf Nordland or Nordlandn or Nordlandes. I'm not sure if Olaf was the priest, but his name is recorded on numerous times in the marriage books.
Note: Ole died on 1 Jan 1940. Barbara had posted a photo of Ole and Kristiana with the date of 19 Jul 1939 and labelled as "50th anniversary " [but of course it was only their 48th anniversay] .... IS it possible that the family celebrated their 48th anniversay in Jun/Jul 1939, possibly because Ole wasn't feeling well ?? and somehow, family members started recording the date as the 50th anniversary
**** See, my document "Marriage - oäkta" initally written on 19 Jan 23019 with some additions on 2 Mar 2019. Saved on, my PC [ C:\\Users\\ruebe\\Documents\\~Genealogy - general resources\\Learning - E Book, gen pdf, webinar\\Sweden - marriage, öakta ]
== Genealogical Proof Standard
The most reasonable Conclusion is that their likely marriage date is 19 July 1891; this is based on: - the most "orginial" document, that is, the marriage record from the Vigselbok, Sweden Church Records - surity or confidence level - 2-3 (with 4, the highest)

15. b. Husförhör (Household examinations), AI:11, 1885-1890, page 48 Los, Gävleborg, Sweden; farm Grufbyn
- top of the page is Torgal Persson Skaaret, wife and 3 forsterchildren; Torgal is recorded as a Handelsman (merchant or trader) - three lines down (line 8) is Ole Olsen Skaaret, born 16 Jan 1969 in Trysil and arrived on 20 Sep 1888; Ole is recorded as 'Handelsm...? Gårdsbrukarenson - or a farmer; then on 9 Oct 1889, Ole moves to page 42 ... this is another house? still at Grufbyn [bottom of the page is Olaf Skaaret and wife] [ see research notes under Torgal Persson Skaaret regarding a summary of "Skarets first arriving in Los parish Sweden" ]

c. Husförhör (Household examinations) , 1890-1894 (AI:12), page 51 Los, Gävleborg, Sweden; farm Grufbyn

- starting with line 29, Ole Olsen Skaret, born 16 Jan 1869 in Trysil, Norge [Ole is also recorded on page 44 on his own] then Kristina Eriksdotter (married 19 Jul 1891) and his daughter Avey Rangborg (born 13 Sep 1890) and son Olaf Arthur (born 1 Jan 1893). - there is a note written under Kristina and above Avey - "antr nunt" ????? - I can't a translation; 'antr' is the beginning from some words, meaning to "enter into", but 'nunt' [maybe a shorten form of 'trolovning' ???? ;; 'antr nunt' likely means, to enter into an engagement / betrothal ** the actual phrase is "ante nupt."
- on the far right column, this record also shows Ole leaving for North America with a date 8 Sep 1892 and Kristina, Avey and Olaf Arthur on 29 Jun 1893. It is likely that Kristina, Avey and Olaf Arthur continued to reside at Grufbyn from 1891 (when Ole left) until 1893 when they left for North America. - Kristina and Avey are also recorded on page 134 under the household of her parents, Erik Andersson line 4 - the last 2 columns of this record is "see p. 51, 14 Jul 1891" - page 51 under Grufbyn (Ole and Kristina were married on 19 Jul 1891;; ** under Kristina it is written "hemmes oä D. ... Avey Ragnborg" - I believe this means, her "illegitmate daughter" with oä as an abbreviation for "oäkta" ;; Kristina is only recorded for the year, 1890 [ she then moves to Grufbyn on 15 July and is married on 19 Jul 1891 and this is why I thing Kristina and Avey stayed at the home of Torgal Skaaret,.

15. d. 1885-1889, farm Grufbyn (register or index starts at image 37)

This likely refers to leasing farm/land, likely from his uncle Torgal Persson Skaaret
- page 42, farm Grufbyn) Ole Olsen Skaret, born ..... under Flyttat column, see 48, 9 Oct 1889 BUT, prior to name is the word 'Bokhållaren' which translated as "Bookeeper or merchant's clerk" ; clearly the second letter is 'o' not 'a'
Farm/locality of Grufbyn or also spelled as "Gruvbyn". Prior to Ole's (on line 17) name is the word "Bokhållaren", translated as "bookeeper". A basic translation of "Grufbyn" (Gruvbyn) is "mining village". Ole Skaaret from the Østerdølenes Saga by K G Nilsen: 20 Oct 2024, Minnesota, United States
Østerdølenes Saga by K G Nilsen. Fuhr Publishing and Printing Co. Duluth, Minnesota. 1938. link, http://www.dxhansen.com/osterdolenes-saga.pdf
It is not clear who had written this submission. In the "recognition page" [image 2], the author notes that Mrs K G Nilsen and Mrs Mina Kjernet Foss had traveled for several months around the Østerdølenes settlements in many states and collected information for the book and they also organized several Østerdal teams. This implies that the submission for Ole Skaret is most likely based on direct information from Ole and Kristina, with some editing. And some of the details and places noted also indicate that Ole and Kristina had given direct information for this book [neither the booklet, "... Memories of Ole and Kristina Skaret, about 1967" or the submission in the Armena History book, 1981 contain these details]. It's likely the information is from about 1935-36. However, it is also clear that I have no direct evidence that Ole and Kristina provided the information, but it is most probable.
Ole Skaaret submission is on page 362 of the book; the following is a translation with some added notes by myself:
Ole Skaaret is the son of Ole P. Skaaret and Gjertrud Pedersdatter Grambo. He has much to tell about the hardships of the journey to America and the struggles of pioneer life. He spent his first Christmas in America in the timber woods [note that Ole had left Los, Sweden on 8 Sep 1892 and Kristina left on 29 Jun 1893]¹ . He worked and cried all Christmas Day, but it was necessity that drove him. Then he left the woods for Leeds, North Dakota [Benson Co; about 200 west of Grand Forks, ND] , and when the ticket was paid, he had exactly 25 cents left in his pocket. With this amount, he bought a Norwegian book. He arrived in Leeds without money, hungry, and disheartened. He walked around the town looking for someone who could speak Norwegian².
Yes, there were a couple who were struggling to harness the horses to the sled, and during this attempt, they spoke Norwegian so that it sang in the walls of the house. At least there were a couple who could speak Norwegian. He struck up a conversation with them to find out where his half-brother Nils Viken was ³. The end of the story was that he traveled with these people across the countryside since one of their neighbors wanted a boy [a worker] \emdash and there Ola stayed in the winter, working for food [this account does not note the exact location of the farm, but it is likely that it was not a significant distance from Leeds; it also implies that Ola/Ole was the 'boy' who was hired by the neighbor].
In the spring, he took a job with a Norwegian farmer near Grand Harbor, North Dakota. This man helped Ole buy a ticket so he could send for his wife, and he was happy in the midst of poverty when she arrived. The next summer, he rented himself out for 25 dollars a month, and his wife stayed at the same place, receiving a white cow as payment. Then he acquired land [homestead in Wells Co, ND], bought shares, and progressed step by step. Now he lives in a good home in Canada.
¹ I have added some information to the narrative \endash this has been included in square brackets [ ] ² In terms of a timeline, Ole first worked in the the 'woods' and then around Christmas of 1892, he likely traveled by train to Leeds, Benson Co, ND. It's likely he had received some information that Nils Viken had been in Leeds, but it appears that Ole never found Nils. So it's likely that towards the end of 1892 or early 1893 is when he traveled with the 2 men in the wagon 'over the countryside'. Then in the spring of 1893, he went to work for a farmer somewhere in the Grand Harbor area. ³ Nils Viken was the son of Ole's father's second wife, Helene who was first married to Halvor N Viken.
Note: Østerdølenes Saga is written in Norwegian. I have used Google Translate and also the free version of Chatgpt for translation. The Chatgpt translation seems to be a bit better.
Note: an account of the Østerdølenes Saga is written in the "Grambo book ..." on page 182. It is not substantially different from the above, it notes a possible meaning for the title of the book, "The Saga of the People from Osterdalen".
Above copied with my notes complied, 20 Oct 2024 by Rueben D Grue ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My notes written on 27 Jun 2020. The above account implies that Ole randomly travelled thoughout MN and ND. However, I wondered if this would have been accurate. Although people from Norway or Sweden may have randomly travelled, it is more likely that they would have gone to an area where they had some connection, a connection through a friend or neighbor or some other family connection. Ole did not have many direct family connections, but there were a few: [1] aunt Oline Persdatter Grambo who was married to Ole Sogaarden and they lived at Holmes City Twp, Doulgas Co in MN - this is close to 500 kms from Ole's eventual homestead, east of Harvey, ND. Perhaps he had made a connection with them early and then made some type of connection for work in "timber forests" that was likely somewhere in either the north-eastern part of Minnesota, or in the band of land, known as the "Big Woods" - see below. [2] Ole had another aunt Pernilla Olsdatter Skaaret but she and her husband, Halvor Norby had settled in Mason Co, Washington after leaving Norway in 1887. [3] Ole's half-brother, Nils Viken. Nils Viken was NOT a half-brother, but could maybe labeled as a step-brother. Nils was the son of Helene Halvorsdatter (b 1838), Ole's father's second wife, but Nils Viken's father was Halvor Nilsen Viken, Helene's first husband. [see Nils Viken's research notes on my Legacy family tree].
Ole Skaret also had connections through his wife, Kristina Eriksson (Eriksdotter). These are a bit distant, but she had a cousin, Sigrid Jonsdotter b 1841 who was a 2nd cousin once removed. Sigrid Jonsdotter was married to Olof Halstensson, b 1838 (he was also a cousin of Kristina's - half-3rd cousin once removed). In 1892-93, Sigrid Jonsdotter and Olof Halstensson were living in Sheyenne Twp in Eddy Co, ND a distance of about 50 kms south-west of Devils Lake. The other possibility was a brother to Olof, Per/Peter Halstensson was also living in Sheyenne Twp at the time. It seems to me that that Ole Skaret may have visited the family of Olof and/or Peter while or after coming to the general area in early 1893.
Also Kristina's (Skaret) uncle Sven Anderson had homestead in Stearns Co, MN, not far from St Cloud, and her aunts, Helga (Hendrickson), Marie (Hanson) and Ingeborg (Olson) had homesteaded in the area around Cokato in Wright Co, MN. In 1892, they were still around the area (although Ingeborg may have moved further west to Renville Co, MN). However, it is unlikely that Kristina knew her uncle and aunts, since Kristina grew up in Los parish, Gävleborg Co and her father's brother Sven and his sisters grew up in Ostmark parish in Värmland Co, a distance of around 265 kms.
