Mikkel Johnsen Bakken

Summary:


Mikkel Johnsen Bakken is my 4th cousin 4 times removed. He was born in 1804 at Bakken Vestre in the Tufsingdalen area, around 20 kms or so from the current town on Os Hedmark Co, Norway [in north Østerdalen]. Mikkel died in 1875, also at the farm Bakken Vestre. He was married to Laurensia Andersdatter [the spelling of her given name varies in the records]. Mikkel and Laurensia/Laurentia had 8 children. Two children, daughter Kirsti [b 1835] and son John [b 1844] married and remain in Norway. The other 6 children, Ingeborg, Ingrid, Anne Lucie, Dorthe Marie, Anders, and Esten all emigrated to the United States. Additionally Mikkel's wife Laurensia also emigrated to the US in 1888. All eventually settled in Nelson County, North Dakato.

Mikkel Johnsen Bakken, b 1804, family relationship to my family is quite distant. But the family relationship is through the ancestors of my second great-grandmother, Berit Sophie Mikkelsdatter Midtdal, 1832-1899, who was married to Lars Mikkelson, 1830- 1922. Mikkel Johnsen Bakken was the grandson of Johanna Larsdtr Gammelstuen [1735-1822]. Johanna Larsdtr was the daughter of Lars Solandsen [1708-1774] and Lars Solandsen was the son Soland Mikkelsen [1678-1756]. Soland Mikkelsen, b 1678, was a brother to my 6th great grandfather, Lars Mikkelsen [1682-1752]. Mikkel Johnsen Bakken, b 1804, and my 2nd great grandmother Beret Sofe Mikkelsdtr Midtdal, b 1832 were the same generation and were 4th cousins.

To continue with my own relationship, my great grandmother Berit Sofie Larsdatter Mikkelson [born 1861] was the daughter of Lars Mikkelson and Berit Sofie Midtdal, and my great-grandmorthter was married to Thore Simensen Grue born 1853. Berit Sofie Larsdatter Mikkelson and Thore Simensen Grue had a son, Lars Thorsen Grue born in 1887 who was my grandfather. A son of Lars was my father, Oliver T Grue, 1915-1992.

Two of Mikkel's children stayed in Norway \endash daughter Kristi and son John. His other children all emigrated to the United States. Esten, Ingrid, and Ane Lucie left for North America in 1879. Daughters Ingeborg and Dorthe Maria left in 1881, but it is not known if they traveled together. Son Anders seems to have left Tolga \endash Os parish in 1872 for Sweden and he may have then emigrated from Sweden; he was in the US before 1 Jun 1880 since he is recorded living with his brother Esten in Waterloo Twp, Alamakee Co, Iowa. Also note that 2 of the children of Mikkel's son, John Mikkelsen Bakken also had emigrated to the Hay Lakes area of Alberta, Canada [Mikkel Bakken born 1879 and Sofia born 1873 and who was married to Ole Feragen - see their research pages for more detail]
