Summary:
Ingrid Mikkelsdatter Bakken was my 5th cousin, 3 times removed. My relationship to Ingrid is quite distant, but the family relationship is through the ancestors of my second great-grandmother, Berit Sophie Mikkelsdatter Midtdal, 1832-1899, who was married to Lars Mikkelson, 1830- 1922. See her father's page for an outline of my family relationship. She was born in 1841 on the farm Bakken Vestre in the Tufsingdalen are of Tolga parish. Ingrid had a daughter outside of marriage in 1867 [Gea]; she later married in 1870 to Johannes Narjord.
On 3 Oct 1870, Ingrid married Johannes Syndvisen Narjord, 1838-1886, who was my half 2nd cousin, 3 times removed. And so, the I have a double relationship with her and Johannes' descendants.
Ingrid came to the US with her husband Johannes Narjord in 1879. After arriving at Quebec, Quebe, they went directly to Waterloo Twp, Allamakee Co, Iowa. It is quite likely that they went to a cousin of Johannes', Elias Hansen Narjord, who left Norway in 1854. Later Ingrid and Johannes lived at or near to the town/village of Quantral in Waterloo Twp, where Johannes had a blacksmith shop. Johannes died in 1886, but I haven't found a cause of his death.
It appears that Ingrid, her daughters Gea and Johanna and her son Sonvis stayed in Iowa until around 1889 or 1900 or 1901. I have not found a 1900 US Census record in Iowa or North Dakota. However, it is likely that they had moved around to either Towner Co or Benson Co in North Dakota. Ingrid's sisters - Dorthe Marie and her husband Hans Paulson, Ingeborg, and Anne Lucie had likely moved in the later 1890s.
I have conducted a fair amount of research on Ingrid's daughter Gea, and her daughter Johanna Marie, and son on her son Sonvis. See their research pages for further information, as well as the research pages for her sisters.
The first record that I have found for Ingrid in North Dakota is the initial payment on 14 Feb 1902 for her homestead entry in Denhoff Twp, Sheridan Co, ND. Both Sonvis and Johanna Marie [Johanna used the given name, Mary, in North Dakota and possibly earlier in Iowa] also had homesteads in Denhoff Twp. It appears the Ingrid continue to live on the homestead, but it also seems that the three of them lived in the same house. The Bailey FT on Ancestry has posted a photo of Johanna/Mary and Ingrid that most likely was taken on the homestead, given the background prairie in the photo.
Ingrid died on 28 Aug 1928 on the homestead in Denhoff Twp. She is buried at the Denhoff Cemetery, about 1 km south of the homestead and just outside the town limits of Denhoff.
