Summary:

Dorthe Marie Mikkelsdatter Bakken was my 5th cousin, 3 times removed. See her father's page for an outline of my family relationship.
She was born in 1847 on the farm in the Tufsingdalen are of Tolga parish. Dorthe Marie was twin sister of Ane Lucie Bakken.

Dorthe Marie along with her son Mikkel left Tolga parish in 1881 for North America, but I have not found an emigration record for them [see his page for some detail on their emigration]. It seems that she first went to the home of her brother Esten in Waterloo Twp, Allamakee Co, Iowa. In 1884 she married Hans Paulson b in 1835. They initially lived in Caledonia Twp, Houston Co, MN just across the MN and IA state line in a general area often referred to "Norwegian Ridge" due to a large presense of Norwegians.

In the summer of 1887 Hans had travelled to Benson Co, ND and had initiated homestead papers. The next spring [1888], Hans and Dorthe along with their 2 young daughters had moved to West Antelope Twp in Benson Co, ND. They had first purchased through the pre-emption process land on Sec 18; then a Timber Culture Entry also on Sec 18; and finally a homestead split between Sec 17 and Sec 20. Hans and Dorthe continue to farm in West Antelope Twp. Hans died in 1907; Dorthe continued on the farm. Sometime after 1920, Dorethe moves into the town of Maddock and lives with her sister, Ane/Anna.

  Noted events in her life were:

1. Emigration, 1881, 1881, Tolga Parish, Hedmark, Norway. Dorthe Maria Mikkelsdatter Bakken born in 1847 and her son, Mikkel born in 1875 left Tolga parish for North America. However, I have not found them listed in the Tolga Parish, out-migration records, Emigrants from Trondheim - Norway Emigration Records collection on Ancestry [Trondhiem Politikammer] or on any ship lists. The emigration year is from the 1900 US census record. Her son Michael's [Mikkel Paulson] obit records his came to the US with his mother when he was 6 years old, and thus, the year would have been 1881.
