Summary:

Mikkel / Mike Paulson was my 6th cousin. He was born on 24 Mar 1875 at Os-Tolga parish, Hedmark Co. Mikkel's mother was Dorthe Maria Mikkelsdatter Bakken, b 1847. His mother was not married; his father was recorded as Martin Kristiansen. Mikkel used the name Mike Paulson in the US. His mother had married in 1884 in Houston Co, MN to Hans Paulson, and so Hans would have been his step-father.

Mikkel and his mother left Tolga in 1881. However, I have not found them listed in the Tolga Parish, out-migration records, Emigrants from Trondheim - Norway Emigration Records collection on Ancestry [Trondhiem Politikammer] or on any ship lists. The emigration year is from the 1900 US census record. Her son Michael's [Mikkel Paulson] obit posted on findagrave notes that he came to the US with his mother when he was 6 years old, and thus, the year would have been 1881.

Mike Paulson's obit on 1951 notes that he and his mother had lived for while at Quandahl, IA* and later at Spring Grove, MN**, but in 1888 he had moved to West Antelope Twp in Benson Co, North Dakota. Mike continued to live with his mother and step-father [see her page for 1900 US Cenus, and some others]. In Jun 1896, Mike took out homestead papers for Sec 18 in West Antelope Twp

On 15 Jun 1904, Mike married Inga Caroline Oseth, and they continued to farm on Sec 18 in West Antelope Twp. They had 4 children:
[1] Beatrice [1905-1986] married in 1951 to Melvin Simensen [1907-1975]; see her findagrave id 43299384. No children
[2] Henning [1910-1978]; not married, findagrave id 43298856. No children
[3] Manley Irvine [1912-1963]; married in 1940 to Agnes Liudahl [1916-2009]; see his findagrave id 43298879. 1 daughter
[4] Alvin Sanford [1917-1975]; married in 1947 to Carmen Togstad [1926-2022]; see his findagrave id 43298806. 1 daughter, 4 sons



* Quandahl - this likely refers to the farm of his mother's brother, Esten. However, from my research Esten and his family lived in the Waterloo Twp area from 1879 to around 1890. All of Esten's children were born in Waterloo Twp, Allamakee Co with the youngest son, Peter who was born in 1884. Esten Bakken died in 1893, and his mother continued to live on their farm for a number of years. I don't have an exact date that Esten moved to the farm near Quandahl in Highland Twp, Winneshiek Co, IA, but the family is recorded in the 1885 IA State Census at Waterloo Twp, Allamakee Co. In the 1895 IA State Census, Esten's wife and his sons are at Highland Twp.
** Spring Grove - this is also is not completely accurate. Mike's mother was married in Sept of 1884 and both her and Hans Paulson are recorded as living at Caledonia Twp, Houston Co, MN then and in the 1885 MN State Census. Caledonia Twp is about 16 kms north/east of Spring Gove, Houston Co.
