Research Notes:
Summary:
Anders Bakken is my 5th cousin, 3 times removed. See his father's page for an outline of my family relationship. In the US he used the surname, "Bakke"
From the information I have researched, it appears that Anders left Tolga parish in 1872 for Sweden. However, the out-migration records for Tolga parish do not record a location in Sweden, and I have not found any other records for Anders in Sweden or Norway.
From the Palmer family tree on Ancestry there is a link to the Canadian Passenger Lists for Anders M Bakke. Using this information, I found the passenger list from Library and Archives Canada. This shows that Anders M Bakke sailed on the Ship Columbus departing Bergen, Nor on 17 May 1872, arriving at Quebec, 1 Jul 1872. There is no age recorded for Anders, so it is almost impossible to prove that this person is in fact 'our' Anders. There is also no indication of his designation. Anders departing from Bergen is also questionable. The record shows that he left Bergen on 17 May 1872. As indicated the Norway Parish record is a bit unclear on the date for his leaving Tolga parish, but he is recorded with the date of 31 Dec 1872, leaving for Sweden. It is possible that he changed his mind and decided to emigrate, but if so, why would he travel all the way to Bergen to sail to N America and not travel to Trondheim? The only possible explanation that I can think of is that from Bergen you could sail direct, whereas from Trondheim you had to travel to Glasgow and then Liverpool. Of course, another possibility is that the record of 1872 sailing from Bergen is not 'our' Anders M Bakken.
Note: the 1880 US Census does not record a year of immigration and he died before the 1900 US Census. There is no 1875 IA State census and there is no 1895 ND State Census
Anders Bakken was living at Waterloo Twp, Allamakee Co, Iowa according to the 1880 US Census, but this record does not record emigration information. Anders was living with his brother Esten's family. Sometime after 3 Apr 1884, Anders left Iowa for the Nelson Co, North Dakota. He is recorded in the homestead records for Nelson Co, ND. He possibly traveled to the area in the summer or fall of 1884 and likely traveled to the family of his future wife, Tonnetta Arlien and her parents. Tonnetta is recorded living in Waterloo Twp, Allamakee Co, Iowa in the 1880 Census. The homestead records indicate that T Arlien [Thore] had first indicated his intention to file for a homestead on west half of the NW and SW quarters of Sec 22 but then submitted for the east half of the NW and SW of Sec 22. Anders then submitted payment in 1887 for the west half of the NW and SW quarters of Sec 22.
Anders Bakke [Bakken] married Tonnetta Arlien on 20 Jan 1885 at the Sheyenne Lutheran Church in Nelson Co, ND. The Church was started about 1882, and was located on Sec 2 of Bergen Twp. The Church and Cemetery are about 2.5-3 kms north east of Anders' homestead.
Anders Bakke [Bakken] died suddenly on 10 Aug 1897 at the age of 46 years. He is buried at the Sheyenne Lutheran Cemetery in Bergen Twp. His wife died in 1934 and is most likely buried at Sheyenne Lutheran Cemetery [see my notes on her burial].
Note: I have not research the children of Anders M Bakke [Bakken] or their descendants in any detail. Much of the information that I have recorded is from Brian Bakke's FT.

NOTE: an interesting side note. One of the pastors that served Sheyenne Lutheran Church, Bergen Twp was Benjamin Ostrem [image 766 of the above book], from the fall of 1939 to the fall of 1942. He was born in 1902 and died in 1977 in Millington, Kendall County, Illinois. Benjamin Ostrem was the youngest son of Thomas G Ostrem [ see Armena History Book, page 346-347 ]. This of course means that Benjamin was a brother of Gustav Ostrem [1896-1967] who married my great aunt, Ragnhild Skaret [1902-1990]. Benjamin was also a brother to Bertina Ostrem [1898-1989] who had married my great uncle Arthur Skaret [1897-1938]

Sheyenne Lutheran Cemetery, Bergen Twp, Nelson Co, ND ... Sec 2, SW¼, south west corner
.. after more than an hour googling for the location of the Sheyenne Lutheran cemetery, Billion graves gave the address: 10654 23rd Street NE, Pekin. But for a bit I could not see the cemetery on google earth .. then a family website for "b-b.family" [https://b-b.family/hb/showmap.php?cemeteryID=152&tree=BB], had somewhat of a link to the cemetery .. this actually highlighted "Bergen". I then asked for directions and then with enlarging the screen, finally I found the church and cemetery .. latitude: 47.74 646 .... and longitude, -98.300 [this is the same as findagrave] .... but that still doesn't match google earth: 47-44-50 and 98-18.00..... I don't understand why the difference .. ... directions to the cemetery using Google Maps:
1.go east of Pekin, abt .05 km on hwy 15 to the junction with hwy 1 2.south on hwy 1 [106 Ave NE] for abt 5 kms to the junction with 23rd St NE 3.east of 23rd St NE for a little more than 0.5 km and on the north side of the gravel road, you should be able to see the church and then to the north of the church, is the cemetery.
Anders M Bakke [Bakken], homestead Using the "land converter website", Sec 22, Twp 149N, 60W of the 5th:
1. from the junction of Hwy 1 and 23rd street NE, continue to travel south about 2 kms to the junction of: 106 Ave [hwy 1] and 21 St NE [aka, hwy 18] 2. west on 21 St NE for abt 0.5 km .... to the south of the gravel road would be section 22 ... the north and western boundary of Sec 22 and the NW¼ would be at the corner of 21 St NE and 105 Ave NE. 3. from the plat of Bergen Twp, Anders received the patent for the W½ of NW¼ and SW¼ of Sec 22. Anders' father and mother in law, Thore and Anna Arlien had the E½. Viewing the 1909 plat of Bergen Twp on "historicmapworks.com" website * there is not a "dot" indicating a farmstead for Anders, but there is a dot for the farmstead of Anna Arlien. It is not clear if Anders and Tonnetta had actually lived with her parents, or if Tonnetta moved in with her mother after Thore died in 1888 or after Anders died in 1897.
The Nelson Co history book [vol 1, images 721-722] makes very little mention of Anders Bakke, only that he had married Thore Arlien's daughter and that he had the patent for the W½ of the NW and SW quarters of Sec 22. His children 'inherited' his land and eventually sold the land to others. *[ https://historicmapworks.com/Map/US/38001/Bergen+Township/Nelson+County+1909/North+Dakota/ ]

US Naturalization ... intention made on 3 Apr 1884 at Winneshiek Co, IA "... intention to become a US Citizen" and declaration on 13 Jun 1890 at the court at Nelson Co, ND .... name as Anders Bakke 2640
Noted events in his life were:
1. Emirgration, unknown, Unknown, Sweden or Norway.
2. Disproven Emigration, 1872, 17 May 1872, Bergen, Norway. There is only one record for the emigration of a person named Anders M Bakke, leaving Bergen, Norway and arriving at Quebec, Canada on 1 Jul 1872. However, the Canadain Passenger List record does not record any other identifying information such as age or desgination. Therefore, this may or may not be the record of Anders Mikkelsen Bakken, born in 1851. I have not found any other records for his emigration.
Anders married Tonetta Thoresdatter Arlien on 20 Jan 1885 in Nelson Co, North Dakota, United States.2637 (Tonetta Thoresdatter Arlien was born on 27 Jun 1850 in Oppland, Norway, died on 28 Aug 1934 in Nelson Co, North Dakota, United States 2641 and was buried in Sheyenne Lutheran Cemetery, Bergen Twp, Nelson Co, North Dakota, United States.)
