General Notes:
Christen Jonsen Grue (1780-1864) Biographical Sketch
Written by Rueben D Grue, 14 Apr 2013
Christen Jonsen Grue was born in Jan 1780 at Os, Tolga, Hedmark, Norway. He likely was born on the family farm Gruben, also known as Gruva. Christen was the second oldest son of Jon Simensen Grue (1729-1807) and Gjertrude Toresdtr Breen (1740-1828). Little is known of his early years, but it is likely he received schooling from his father.
Around age 20 (about 1800) Christen attended a teacher training college in Trondheim. According to Thoralf Grue in his book Klokkervang, this school had been set up by Bishop Schønheyder (he was the Bishop for the Dicoses of Nidaros (Throndheim) from 1788 until 1803). Thoralf Grue indicates that Christen then worked as a teacher in Frosta from 1804-1809 and in Skogn from 1809-1822. both Frosta and Skogn are in the county of Nord Trøndelag.
On 19 Jul 1811 Christen married Marta Andersdtr from Skogn. They were married at Alstadhaug parish in the Skogn clerical district of Nord Trøndelag. Around 1820, Christen moved to Molde in the county of Møre og Romsdal. Christen was a Klokker and School Teacher in Molde until the early 1850's (Thoralf Grue indicates until 1853). Christen died in 1864 at Molde; Marta died in 1871 at Molde. It is interesting to note that at some time while he was in Molde, Christen took Schmidt as his middle name. His death and burial records note his name as Christen Schmidt Grue.
In 1839 a nephew, Lars Jonsen Grue (1826-1877) came to live with Christen and Marta (this was shortly after the death of Lars' mother in 1838). Lars later moved to the Smøla area of Møre og Romsdal. It has also been noted by Thoralf Grue that John Simensen Grue (1804-1891) also came to live/stay with Christen for various periods of time. Thoralf noted that John had come to teach Christen's children; however, John is also recorded as being a teacher at the Proste Seminarium (Præteseminarium) in Molde as late as 1837-1841. John would have been a 'half' nephew to Christen (John's father Simen Jonsen Grue and Christen Jonsen Grue were half brothers).
Christen and Marta had 5 children. Jonas Anton Grue was born in 1812 at Alstadhaug, Skogn, Nord Trøndelag. Jonas Anton Grue (known as Anton) grew up in Molde, however, some time after his confirmation (in 1827 at Molde) he moved to Kristiansund, Møre og Romsdal (Kristiansund is is about 70 kms to the north of Molde in the Nordmøre district of Møre og Romsdal). Jonas Anton was known as a dyeing master (related to the colour or dyes of fabrics; in Norwegian, farvemester which translates as a colour master). In 1835 he married Anne Johanna Hinchen (1811-). Jonas Anton and Anne had 3 children. Their the youngest was born in 1835 and died the same day (he may have been still born); Claus Christian Grue was born in 1837, but died around age 13, probably in late Dec 1850; Johan Anton was born in 1841. Jonas Anton Grue died in June 1843 at the age of 31. I have not been able to find any further information on Johan Anton or his mother, but according to Thoralf Grue there were no living descendants. It is noted that the images on Digitalarkivet for parish registers for Kristiansund show signficant fire damage, so it is likely that the death/burial of both Johan Anton and his mother are lost (I have not found a record of them on the 1865 Norway Census).
Christen Jonsen Grue's (1780-1864) second child was Ove Kristian Grue. He was born in 1814, likely in Alstadhaug, Skogn, Nord Trøndelag. He died at age 19 in 1833 in Molde. Ove was unmarried. Christen's third child, Ulrich Leonard Grue was born in 1818 in Alstadhaug, Skogn, Nord Trøndelag. He died in 1837 at the age of 19. He was not married.
Gjertrude Marie Grue was Christen's fourth child. She was born 1822 in Molde. In May 1843 at Molde she married Johan Løckra. They had one child, Mathilde Marie, born in 1844. Mathilde had married Paul Magnus Lund (1842-) in 1866. In 1875 Paul and Mathilde are recorded in the 1875 Norway Census in the parish of Risør, in the county of Aust-Adger (about 250 kms south and a bit west of Oslo). He is recorded as a Sherriff (Lensmand) and a Skibsreder (Ship Owner). However, I have not been able to find any record of them coming into the Risør parish or leaving the parish or any records of their death in the area. I have not been able to find any further information on them in either the Risør or Molde parish registers. There is no record of any births of children, nor is there record of their death. Paul and Mathilde are not recorded in the transcribed 1885 Norway Census for this area. It is not certain what happened to them after 1875.
Gjertrude Marie Grue\endash Løchra lived most of her life in Molde. It is likely that she used the surname, Marie Løchra. She is recorded in the 1865, 1875 and 1885 Norway Census. The 1865 record also shows Mathilde at age 22 living with Marta Grue. In the 1875 record Marie is recorded as a Spiseværtinde \endash likely refers to a boarding house that serves meals (3 people are listed as lodgers). The 1885 records says Marie is householder. Gjertrude Marie died in 1892 at Molde.
Christen's fifth child was Karen Gurine Grue. She was born in 1826 in Molde and died at the age of 26, unmarried, in 1852.
Norway Parish Registers record that Christen Jonsen Grue died in 1864 in Molde. He was 84 years old. His wife, Marta, died at Molde in 1871 at the age of 88. Thoralf Grue in his book, Klokkervang, writes that all of Christen's descendants became "extinct" in Molde/Kristiansund.

In 1800 [Christen] was at the teacher education seminar [teacher training course] that Bishop Schønheyder in Trondheim had established and worked as [a teacher] in Frosta 1804-1809 [and] in Skogn 1809-1822. There he married Marta Andersdtr from Skogen [the forest]. 1822-53 [Christen was a] teacher and church singer/precentor in Molde, where he also trained teachers. Christian Grue must have had sturdy or vigourous character. His handwriting is similar to Isben's but is rounder and [?] his.

9. General notes:
- John Simensen Grue (born 1804) had spent some time, likely prior to 1833, with his half uncle Christen in Molde (according to Klokkevang) - Lars Jonsen Grue (1826-1877), went to live with Christen in Molde in 1839 - he was 12 and 3/4 years old when he left Tolga; this was shortly after the death of his mother in 1838. - see, http://www.pergjendem.com/?p=257; Historieportal, Per Gjendem ---- a brief discussion about the author's great grandpa "Skole-Neils" Pedersen Y Hoem, 'got his exam' at Proste Seminarium in Molde in 1841. This 'strictly religious school' was started in 1837 by Peter Vogelius Deinboll. .... Cand Theol (likely meaning Theological Candidate) Peter Ulrich Stabell and church aidee Jon Grue were regular teachers. --- see, http://www.pergjendem.com/?p=1041 .... Molde Præteseminarium started 1 Jan 1834 with assistance of Peter Ulrich Stabell and Tolga-klokkeren Jon Simonsen Grue [born 1804]
11. Alstadhaug i Skogn. Ministerialbok, 1810-1815, births - page 40-41, top of 2nd side -- unusual entry, ??? NOT Confirmed
- handwriting is very difficult to make out --- Christen Grue is quite clear, BUT ???? - it appears that the notation is a baptism notice - since it says Döbb which I believe is baptism , 31 Aug 1814 .... the words before Christen could stand of his status, but I can't see a name of the child --- it's possible that the child was baptism someplace else, but not recorded ????; but nothing recorded until 26 Dec 1814; also there is a signature - Priest ?????
- this is likely a notation for Ove Grue - according to his record, he was 18 yrs old when he died in 1833, making his birthday 1815 or 1814
-- nothing else to the end of 1815 [ 1 Apr 2013 ]
12. Leaving Entering
- not recorded leaving in Ministerialbok or Klokkerbok for Alstadhaug i Skogn - also not recorded entering in Ministerialbok for Molde i Bolsøy
13. Probate, Molde 1842-1867; there is only an idex, but none listed
