Alberta Homestead Records - Prestlien https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/60865/?name=_Prestlien&name_x=_1 general AB Homestead -
Iver M Prestlien, b 1845, was a 1st cousin once removed to his wife Kjersti Simensdatter Grue, b 1854, and also a first cousin once removed to my great grandfather, Thore Simensen Grue, 1853
1. Source (family correspondence, author unknown: handwritten notes titled "The Prestliens")
- Iver emigrated 18 March 1869 with parents to Tordenskjold Twp, Otter Tail Co, MN - 1883 to Montana, then in 1885 to Silvana, Wash [ BUT see point 8.b. - in WA by 1884 ] - About 1906 emigrated to Alberta, homesteaded; About 1926 returned to Silvana Wash - also: birth and death dates for children - son: Nils Prestlien, b 3 Feb 1892 and son Simon, b 3, May 1878 farmed/homesteaded in the Czar, AB area; daughters of Simon Prestlien, Leonora married Arthur Jay Flynn, and Ester married Alfred Edward Homan - both farmed in the Amisk, AB area
+++++ 1906 Census does not show him or any Prestlien in the AB, SK, or MB ; a viewing of Edmonton district, sub #8 (twp 29, range 12 - Whitecourt area) he is not located --- SO, the comment that he emigrated to Canada in 1906 is likely not correct; 1911 Canadian Census shows that he emigrated to Canada in 1911; Western Land Grants only show him homesteading in the Whitecourt area - but website list does not indicate years
2. Kirsti (Simensdr Grue) emigrated 1868 with her parents (Quebec Passenger Lists, 1865-1921)
-- Norway Parish Records - birth 21 Sept 1854 (family records have shown birth as 27 Sept); Sponsors as Esten Olsen Narjord, John Thoreson Grue, Anders Rasmussen Rosten, Ingeborg Olsdtr Rostbakken, Kari Hansdtr Korsjoen
Iver Prestlien - Norway Parish Records: birth/baptism - parents: Mikkel Nilsen and Anne Beate Iversdatter Prestlien [Prostelien?] - Prestlien is clearly written as a surname - witnesses: Goro Tollefsdtr [?] Søndmør, Sigrid Olsdtr. Grue, Sigrid Marie Iversdtr Prestlien (sister to Anna Beate), Kirksanger John S Grue (this is likely John Simenson Grue, born 1804 - his wife was Sigrid Olsdtr; he was known as a Teacher and Church singer - Kirkesanger), Jacob Nilsen Søndmør (brother to Mikkel Nilsen Sønmør), Ole Jonsen Nygaard
3. 1880 US Census for Tordenskjold Twp, Otter Tail County, MN lists Iver M Prestlien as a Blacksmith, age 34, with wife Kjersti, age 25, son, Mikkel I, age 8, Simon I, age 2, Andrew I, age 3 months; also lists Ole Kulberg, wife Malena and children Catrine and Ole in the same household (Peder O Kulberg, age 11, is listed as a servant to Simon T Grue - Peder O Kulberg is likely the son of Ole Kulberg) .... Iver's father Mikkel Prestlien (spelled as Prestlinen), age 68 (different household) (page 7, ancestry.com)
See Mikkel Prestlien for 1875 MN State
5. Emigrants from Trondhiem lists Mikkel Prestlien (age 56) and family (including wife Anne Beate Iversdatter Prestlien, and son Iver, age 24) as registered on 18 March 1869, home parish as Toglen, destination as St. Paul MN, ship Norway (**** same date and ship as Thore Simens. Grue); this is also the same ship as Nils Svendsen Jodet and with Sigrid Marie Iversdatter Prestlein (a sister to Anne Beate Iversdatter Presltien who are daughters of Gjertrude Persdatter Narjord and grand daughters to Sigrid Jonsdatter Grue and great-grand daughters to Jon Simensen Grue (born 1729)
NOT Confirmed: 30 Jul 2014 [ 27 Jun 2023 - Iver is not recorded in the parish register ++ NOTE: Iver is not listed with the other members of Mikkel N Prestlien leaving Tolga Parish for America in 1869 in the Norway parish registers; Iver isn't recorded as leaving Tolga Parish 1866-1869 (he is listed as living with parents in the 1865 Norway census, as 1 Jan 1866; on 30 Jun 1865, there is one Iver Mikkelsen Narjord, age 19½ <Dec 1845> leaving Tolga parish for Maalselvdalen (Troms Co - in the far north; according to Wikipedia, the area was "...mostly settled in the late eighteenth century by farmers from Østerdalen and Gudbrandsdalen .... the landscape is reminiscent of Østerdalen" ; and possibly traveling with Hans Olsen Nygaard a bit difficult to read the handwriting], but both leaving Tolga on the same date and going to the same place; in Norway Parish Registers for Troms Co, Målselv i Målselv, page 230, line 4, there is an entry for 12 Jul 1864 for Ivar Mikkelsen arriving from Tolgen and looks like a farm listing ?? , possibly Skjulfjord (line 1372 of Excel sheet, 1836 Matrikkel) ??? - there are a number of people/families from Toglen (1865 entry) ... surnames such as ..... Myre, Osmoen, Nygaard, Anders Rasmussen Rosten [ see Marit Svensdtr Nygaard - re; Sigrid Marie Iversdatter Prestlien; 16 Ded 2014 ],

6. 1900 US Census for Stillaquamish Precinct, Snohomish County, Washington lists family - dwelling 65, family 67
- Iver M Prestlien; listed as a widower; farmer; Owner of the farm, free of mortgage; farm schedule 47;
also listed is: Enine (but hard to read), mother, born in Norway, May 1826 (his mother is listed as Anna Beata, and is buried at Peace [Zion] Lutheran - Little Church on the Hill - Silvana, Washington; tombstone has birth as 1826; death as 1913); (his father died in Tordenskjold Twp, Otter Tail Co, MN - burial at Tordenskjold Lutheran Church Cemetery, Tordenskjold Twp, Otter Tail Co; tombstone - born, 2 March 1812; died 28 April 1883)
also listed is: Marit Anderson, sister (born Sept 1853) and Cecil M, niece (born, 8 July 1891)
also listed is: brother-in-law, Cornelius Grue (born April 1863), emigrated 1868, farmer; married 1 year, wife Sina (born May 1866; emigrated 1891)
7. Source: Scandinavians on the Pacific (Stine), 1900 (with a photo), p 166-167
"Iver N. Prestlien, the pioneer of Prestlien Bluff, so named to perpetuate his memory, was born in Norway, and settled on his present location, 1885, when the inviting slope was a gloomy forest. He has done much for the upbuilding of the community, educationally and otherwise"
- the photo clearly shows 2 houses/homes and a number of farm buildings (barns, sheds); in the backgound there are a number of buildings, but difficult to make out if there are homes; a lot of clearing of trees, fallen trees, etc; appears that this is close to the side of the hill, but still on the edge of the flats; this photo also indicates that the school is behind the stump (Prestlien School?) but it is not clearly visible; another picture of a number of people on/near a large tree stump
8. The Prestlie Bluff - Grue Family Papers and Records; article, Oct 2010
- oultines information on the Prestlie Bluff - appears that the land was mostly likely the cash entry grant for Nils Mikkelson Prestlien, although it is possible that both Nils and Iver built their orginal homes on the Bluff
Additional notes:
- 1900 US census indicates that Iver M owns his land and that Anders M (dweling 74, family 76) rents his land. The 1910 Platt for Twp 32 N, Range 4E, Snohomish Co, WA shows Anders (A M Prestlien) on 20 acres on Sec 34 and 20 acres on Sec 27.
[ 4 June 2010 ] I had spoken with a current home owner, Warren (close to the corner of 36 Ave NW and Pioneer Hwy; Sec 34). Warren stated that he has lived there for 17 years and that there has been serious floods, over the 7 years he has lived there: the flood season is from Nov to Feb - heavy rains, warm "pinapple express", banking up against the mountain
== [ 4 June 2010 ] - I was at Stanwood Historical and spoke with Alex Gestad (his uncle and aunt were Simon Prestlien and Tilda Gestad); Alex's age is estimated to be in the mid-70's. When asking him about the Prestlie Bluff, he stated it was at the end of the Stubb Road (his manner was that he was very clear about this). I have photos of a bit of a clearing above the Pioneer Highway, taken from 28 Ave NW (sign post also states this Stubb Road); 28 Ave, appears to be to the dividing line between Sec 35 and 34 - Map of Greater Stanwood, NW Snohomish Co; 2005. I drove up to the area (land is for sale), but no one was at home. In reviewing the 1910 platt, A M Prestlien is listed on the 40 acres on Sec 34 (about mid-way; currently 36 Ave NW, also listed as Olsen Road) and with 20 acres on Sec 27.
Also listed on 1910 Platt is Sarah Wold with 40 acres on Sec 35 (right next to Sec 34) and 20 acres on Sec 26 and 20 acres on Sec 27 - this would correspond to the end of Stubb road and the clearing up the hill. Perhaps this is Prestlee Bluff? - Sarah Wold was married to Nels Prestlien about 1874; they had arrived at Silvana by 1885 (WA 1885 Census, but recorded as Nels Preston, Maria age 10, Ole age 7, Clara age 5 <1880>) --- note: did Nels M and Iver M Prestlien families travel from MN to WA together? Nels died in 1891; in 1892 his wife (Sarah) married Lars Vold who died in 1895; she had 2 daughters, Mrs Marie Botten in Norway and Mrs Clara Botten in Silvana - Clara was Clara Prestlien and married to Iver Botten (Botten's store in Silvana). She immigrated to the US in 1858 with her mother, Mrs Carrie Torgerson. In the 1934 Platt, this land (Sarah Vold) is listed as Iver Botten (wife, Clara, her daughter). Note: Sarah and her parents, John and Carrie Torgenson are listed in 1870 New Hope Twp, Portage Co, Wisconsin; in the 1860 US they are at Spring Grove Twp, Houston Co, MN; in 1880 they are at Tumuli Twp, Otter Tail Co, MN; Sarah and Nels M Prestlien are listed in Tordenskjold Twp, Otter Tail Co, MN in the 1880 Census (p1, ancestry.com), with 3 children, Anna Maria, age 4, Ole, age 2, and Clara age 11/12, all born in MN; Nels and Sarah are listed in the 1887 WA State Census (children, Ola, age 10, Clara age 8, Marie age 2 - all born in MN); NOTE: Carrie Torgenson - Ancestry.com Hawkins-Hansen family tree (John Hawkins - grandparents were Iver Botten and Clara Prestlien); she is named Carrie Vingelen, born 28 Oct 1830 at Troen, Vingelen, Norway; John Hawkins has a photo of Clara Prestlien and Iver Botten; also it is noted that another public member tree, Gilmer family tree, dixiemoon47, has added some photos
= to further determine Iver's land, I will need to research land records

8. b. "Norse to the New Northwest" by Bob H Hansen. The Seattle Times Magazine, 19 Oct 1975, p 9 [ article in Nils M Prestlien folder ]
- records that Nils Mikkelsen Prestlien was the first settler on Prestlien's Bluff - also records that a grandaughter to Nils Mikkelsen Prestlien, Mrs Jalmer I Moe, obtained copies of Nil's homestead application (1886) from the US National Archives
same article by Bob H Hansen referred above notes that Nils Mikkelsen Prestlien had in 1883 had cleared a homesite, built a lean-to and then a cabin. If Nils and Iver travelled together, then it is likely that Iver was in the Silvana area by 1883 --- it is also possible that Michael Anderson with wife Marit Prestlien (sister to Iver and Nils) may also have traveled at the same time - according to her obit, they arrived at Bellingham Bay in 1883

-- the 'official' dates for both Iver and Nils are the same; I suspect that both Iver and Nils came to the Silvana area at the same time and started to clear and build cabins, likely in the area known as Prestlie's Bluff; this was likely in the summer of 1884 or possibly 1883. The exact year that Iver and Nils came to WA State is not clear
Assumption: One Iver and Nils traveled/came together to Washington State some time in 1883 - apparently comments from the homestead records for Nils suggests that "...by the summer of 1883 ... cleared land ... built a lean-to ( see above point 8.b). Thus 1883 However, if Iver and Nils traveled together, the earliest would have been in the fall of 1883 when they arrived, since Iver's son, Iver, was born 28 Aug 1883 in MN - Iver's obit published in 1931 states that he left MN in 1883, but "The Priestliens" doc says they went to MT in 1883 and stayed for awhile - both families are recorded in the 1885 WA State census, as of 2 Feb 1885 - thus establishing that they were in WA prior to Feb 1885 sometime in 1884 - Iver operated a sawmill in the summer of 1884 - so it is likely he was in the area before 1884; but how did he get the engine - did he buy it (Bellingham? Seattle?)
Assumption: Two Iver, Nils, and Mikkel traveled together - Mikkel died in 20 July 1884 at Silvana, so they were in the area before this.
8. d. Stanwood Camano News, 29 Oct 2013 [ snip from NewsLibrary.com; 16 Aug 2017 ]
"News Files EARLY HISTORY. In 1883, Ivar and Kerstie (Grue) Prestlien came from Minnesota to Norman where they homesteaded and built a home which has since become called The Prestlien Bluff. Born in Norway, 1845, Ivar married Kerstie in 1874, and 10 children were born to their union. He was a leader in building both Lutheran churches at Silvana."
- also see my article from Oct 2010, "The Prestlie Bluff" ; This includes a link to the exact issue when this note was published
Conclusion: It is likely not possible to establish whether Iver and Kjersti were in the Silvana area in 1883 or 1884. I think they likely traveled west in the fall of 1883 and arrived in the area in the spring of 1884.

"Ivar Prestlien operated the first sawmill in 1884; its capacity was only 4,000 feet of lumber daily and its power was a 16-horsepower boiler and engine." --- see PDF page 511, Vol 1 - it is likely he must have purchansed the boiler and engine in Washington - Seattle? or from someone in the area?

SmallTown Newspapers ....] [also: Everett Daily Herald, 20 Nov 1931, p6 ... likely accessed at Everett Public Library] - Everett newspaper - - name as Iver Michael Prestlien .... interment at family plot, Silvana cemetery
- named spelled as Evar - pioneer of Stillaguamish Valley - born in Telgen [Tolgen] - emigrated 1869 to Otter Tail Co, MN - left MN in 1883 and settled at Norman, WA - homesteaded a tract of land & built a home, known as the "Prestlie Bluff" - sold the farm in 1903 and moved to Santa Rosa, California - 1905 moved to Alberta, Canada where he took up another homestead** (he still possessed [is in possession] until the time of his death ****) - 1926 moved back to WA and resided with his children in Everett - leading member in building both of the Lutheran Churches in Silvana; public spirited man, donating money and labor to the churches - reports "his remains were laid to rest at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery" +++ on the Peace Lutheran Church website [Sivlana, WA], under the 'associated ministries' and then 'our cemeteries' is the following: "...Zion Lutheran Cemetery (which includes the small, older cemetery of Pleasant Hill)..." [ link, https://plsilvana.org/cemeteries-2/ ]
** homestead in AB in 1905 ?? - must be a mistake, [8 Jul 2023] - I haven't found him listed on the AB homestead index - only in the Whitecourt area, twp 59 or in twp 39, the area that sons Simon and Nels homesteaded .... I also took a chance and view 1906 census for twp 39 [Strathcona, sub-dis 1] but nothing ... I also reviewed 1906 census for twp 59 in the Whitecourt area [Edmonton, sub-dis 26A] but nothing, in fact, only people are recorded in 59-12-W5th - on other occasions I have reviewed the 1906 Census record for the Armena/Hay Lakes area [Strathcona, sub dis 19A and 19B], but Iver is not recorded
-- it is possible that Iver Prestlien had gone to the Armena/Hay Lakes area [ie, Thore and Cornelius Grue lived there in 1906] and it is possible that Iver had gone to look homesteads, but did not take out an entry .... beginning with the 1911 Canada census, Iver's son Nils is recorded as being born in US and emigrated 1904 - is it possible that Iver and son Nels came to Armena area even in 1904 and at some point, Nels stayed with Cornelius Grue ??? [note that neither Nels Prestlien nor Cornelius Grue are enumerated in the 1906 census]
**** homestead land in 1931 - I again reviewed the 1931 census record for Iver's homestead land in the Whitecourt area. Iver is not recorded, nor is there anybody recorded on sec 19 or sec 20, twp 59, range 12, W5th [sec 19 was the homestead land of son Michael, and sec 20 was Iver's homestead land] [note, in 1931, son Michael Prestlien was living on the quarter section of land that brother Andrew I Prestlien homesteaded ]
- it may be possible that Iver still owned the homestead land, and it was "rented" to someone but that person was living someplace else in Jun 1931
18. ++++++ see research notes for Iver M Prestlien's father (Mikkel N Prestlien, <born 1812; died 1883>, etc, under Ole Olsen Vestgård (father of Olava Olsdtr Røstbakken) ++ This research has BEEN done - see his research page ==== will need to research to determine if Mikkel N Prestlien's is the brother to Kirsti Nilsdtr Søndmør
19. Memories and Milestones, Amisk-Hughenden, pages 1015-1016 (submitted by Jean Bridge)
- In Oct 1910 Iver applied by proxy on homesteads for his sons: Michael, Andrew, Christian, Martin, Nils and Nelvin at Whitecourt

Funerals - Kjersti's funeral is NOT recorded (see image 103); nor is Iver's funeral in 1931 recorded
Our Savior's Lutheran Church Index; ancestry; generally baptisms, marriages, funerals, confirmation/communion, BUT it is questionable if years are complete
"Book 1"images 5-55; yrs abt 1876-1891 "Book 2"images 58-135; yrs as early as 1894-1927 "Book 3"images 136-170; yrs about 1924-1930 then, "Book 2"images 172-897; actually these images are mostly minutes starting in 1930 EXCEPTimages 725-736 - "60th anniversary booklet, 1876-1936; [11 Oct 2022 - no longer on these images] .. notes congregation formed in Aug 1877 (but a minister was there in Aug 1776, but may not have been resident) .. first called Stillaguamish Norwegian Luthern Church, then "subsequently changed to Trinity Lutheran Church (year not recorded); .. cemetery established south of East Stanwood, known in 1936 as Lutheran Cemetery .. Rev Jorgerson came in 1878 and the "field" [likely a missionary field] he was assigned was a large territory '96 Oregon, Washington and British Columbia
.. .. NOTE: some records record "Norman", but doesn't specially record the church or cemetery there.
Zion Lutheran, Silvana
Records the Congregation Constitution (but this doesn't record the year). The first image records that it was formed in 1884 (this is a typed note and likely was added at a different time); images 3 and 4, record the names of members (age 21 years). Included Iver Prestlien med Familie, John Engebretsen med Familie, Cornelius Langsjoen John Langsjoen med Familie, Lars Wold med Familie (Nils Prestlien, died Jun 1891)
.. Image 6, with a date of 26 Feb 1885, notes: "afhalstse aarsm in '84" c then, Iver Prestlien med familie c ? The rest of the images are minutes of meetings, all in Norwegian
.. .. image 94-121 Ministerial "type of book" - baptism (images 96-103), marriages (images 114-116), funerals (images 118-121) ;; some dates as early as 1894 BUT Kjersti's funeral is NOT recorded, nor is Nelvin's birth in Jan 1899
11 Oct 2022: it is a bit confusing with the two Zion church books - Silvana and Standwood???
24. How did Iver and Kjersti travel to Washington? [ 7 June 2010 ] ; did they travel with the Nils Mikkelsen Prestlien family? with Mikkel Mikkelsen? Michael Anderson family?
