Ingeborg Larsdatter

  Research Notes:

Ingeborg Larsdatter, 1851-1905, was my 5th cousin. Ingeborg was on 7 Sep 1851 likely at the farm Lia-Hornset in Ytre Rendal parish. My relationship to her is on the Skaret side of my family. Her father's ancestors can be traced back 7 generations to my 8th Great-grandfather, Gjermund Halvorsen Hammersgaard, born 1634 in Trysil parish, Hedmark.

In 1876, Ingeborg married Sæmming Sæmmingsen, b 1846 at the farm Bergset, (just a few kms north from Ingeborg's home). Sæmming was also known as Semming Semmingsen Hornset and in the US with the surname Bergseth. Ingeborg and Semming had 9 children born in Norway with 2 children dying in infancy. In 1889, Semming and Ingeborg left Ytre-Rendal parish for North America. Unfortunately, I have not found an emigration record - the family is not recorded on the "out-migration" records for Rendal parish. The year 1889 is from the information in the Ytre Rendal bygebok, page 669.

The earliest record that I have found for the family in the US is from the Shiloh Lutheran Church, Elmore, Faribault Co, MN [see Ancestry link below]. This record records the birth of their son Oscar on 18 Mar 1892. The family is next recorded on the 1895 MN State Census for Elmore Twp in Faribault Co, MN. Semming is recorded as a farmer. The family as a whole is not recorded in the 1900 US Census, but 4 of the children are noted in Faribault Co. And in the 1905 MN State Census, some members of the family are recorded at Elmore twp, Faribault Co - Ingeborg and three children. It should be noted that 3 children were born in MN - Oscar, Sam Julius, and Karl Edwin.

From the Shiloh Lutheran Church records for Jordfæstede [in the US records the date of death and funeral] records the death of 7 members of the family, all from "comsumption/TB": Semming, Simon, Sigri/Sigrud, Ida, Ingeborg, and Helga/Helen, and Enga/Inga Sofie. The is a newspaper article in The Bricelyn Sentinel, issue 19 Jul 1907, page 6 for Inga Sofie Bergseth and in this article, it notes "she is the ninth one of the Bergseth family who have died from the dreadful disease, consumption". Of the remaining 4 children, we know that son Sam Julius died in 1918 in France during WW 1. We also know that son Carl Edwin died in 1913, but I do not know what he may have died from. But the newspaper article was written in 1907. I haven't found a death record for Ingeborg's son Lars, b 1876 ... thus he may have died before 1907

If we count Lars dying from TB before 1907, he would be the 8th member of the family to have died of TB: Semming, Simon, Sigri/Sigrud, Ida, Ingeborg, and Helga/Helen, and Enga/Inga Sofie, and Lars. So who was the 9th member?? It may be possible that a baby had been born and died but not recorded [between 1890 and 1891] or the newspaper has an error. Karl Edwin died in 1913, possibly from TB; Sam Juluis died in 1918 in France during the war. Oscar was likely alive in 1910, but I don't know when he died. Since I haven't found a death record for Lars, I am going to record his death as "between 1905 and 1907".

It is most likely that daughter Anne is the only child that lived beyond the 1910s - she died in 1950. See her file for detail. Anne was married and had 9 children, many who also had children.

So inconlusion, TB caused the death of almost all of Ingeborg and Semming's family. Their 'dream' of a new life in the new world vanished.

Ingeborg Larsdatter Bergseth's date of death was on 29 Sep 1905 - see MN death cert and the record from the Shiloh Lutheran Church. However, there is no record of her burial at Riverside Cemetery in Elmore Twp, Faribault Co, MN. But she was most likely buried there with her husband.

  Noted events in her life were:

1. Emigration, 1889, 1889, Lia, Ytre-Rendal, Hedmark, Norway. ¹⁰⁵²² Ingeborg Larsdatter b 1851, and her husband, Sæming Sæmingsen [Semmingsen] Bergseth and their 8 children left Ytre-Rendal parish in 1889. This years is noted in the Ytre-Rendal bygebok on page 689 under the farm Lia, part of the main farm Utstu Hornset. However, I haven't found theire 'out -migration' in the Ytre or Øvre Rendal parish records. Nor have I found them in the Norway Emigration Records on Ancestry.
