1. 1900 US Census for Eden Twp, Polk Co, MN indicates that Thron was born in Sweden; emigrated in 1868 (this may explain why there is no listing for Tobias Movold or family in 1865 Norway Census); However, "First 100 years, 1883-1983, Fosston, MN" excerpt states that Thron was born in Trondheim, Norway

NOTE: there is M S Movold on Sec 32, next door [ 6 Dec 2011 who is this - Marit ??, but initial S -- Mark Sheldon Movold wasn't born until 1935; one of Tobias' nieces, nephews? ]

page 228, col 1&2, 1908; "... K. B. Erickson bought the restuarant of T. Movold early in December 1908. Mr Movold went to Canada ..."
- this is the only entry - no mention of when he went to Maddock or how long he was there. He and his family are recorded in the 1905 MN State Census for Eden Twp, Polk County, so it would have been between 1906-1907. It is not clear if all of the family had moved to Maddock. Maddock is less than 50 kms to the north/west of Sheyenne, Eddy Co, ND.

- lists family, gives Thron's birthplace as Norway; emigrated to Canada in 1908 (prior to April 1908, since Edna's birth is listed as Alberta)

+++ Tobias Movold Obit of June 1907 - says that Thron "is farming in Virginia"

- Thron's country of birth is listed as Sweden (same as 1900 US census), racial origin as Swedish,
- occupation as farm; same "works as own accord OA"

9. 1921 Canada Lethbridge, sub 18

40 Mile Municipality; Sec 4, Twp 7, Range 11, W4th. This location is about 5 kms north of Foremost on Sec Hy 879 and then about 8-10 kms east on Twp Road 70 (about 1-2 kms north of Chin Coolee and about 5 kms north of Etzikom Coolee). 9. source: "Wagons to Wings", Warner and District Community History Book [likely submitted by Bernice Thompson]


- family of 19 children - 7 boys and 12 girls
- indicates that the family moved to AB about 1902 (re: write-up for Leo Movold) (not indexed on listing on the 1906 Canadian Census, District #18 (southern Alberta) [ the year 1902 is wrong, a misprint, or he came for period of time in 1902, but returned to the states)
- family lived in the Masinasin area; 1909 moved to Lethbridge; 1912 to homestead on the Hawkeye Ranch (children went to Kippenville School)
- Thron died in 1922; after this Lena and the girls moved to California
- also includes a write-up for Leo Movold and Bernice Movold (married to Tillman Thompson), but nothing about Lewis (Lewis is listed on the Western Land Grants for a homestead next to Thron) or any other of the children


10. From Standstones to Settlers, Masinasin Country [submitted by Bernice Thompson]

- 1902 - came to Alberta to the Writing-on-Stone area *** (1911 and 1916 Census give 1908)
- 1908 - settled on the NW quarter of Sec 18, Twp 2, Range 12 W4th - - had a store (this is different from the 1911 Canadian Census and the Western Land Grants - Sec 19, not 18) - near Masinasin Cemetery
- [1909?] - Lethbridge - set up a meat market on 13th Street and 2nd Ave; family lived on the upper floors
- [year not given, but by 1916/1917 - page 3] - Hawkeye Ranch on Sec 18, Twp 3, Range 13 - children went to Kippenville School]
- 1917 [1920 - page 3] - Foremost, NW & NE Sec 6, Twp 7, Range 11
- 1922 - Thron died and buried in the Foremost Cemetery
- 1922 - Leo moved to the Coulee Ranch [ Wrentham area, south of Taber ] and worked for the Olsen's
- 1923 - Lena and the girls moved to California

** Bernice Thompson (Sandstones...), says Selma #1, died in infancy at age 1.5 years in Fosston, MN; Since the 1900 Census indicates 9 children and 9 living and lists 9 children, it is likely she was born after 1900, but it would seem strange that she would have been named Selma, since they have a child by the name of Selma living in 1900 and in 1911; the same conclusion is for Martin #2


11. 1930 US Census for Oakland, Alameda Co, CA,

- lists Lena, along with Martina, age 27 and as waitress in a Candy Store; Lottie, age 24 and works as a telephone operator; Edna, age 20, born in Canada and works as a telephone operatorand Nora (born abt 1914 in Montana)

14. Residence in Alberta - Bernice Thompson has written that the family came in 1902; HOWEVER, Census information indicates 1908 - this is most likely correct; HOWEVER, it is possible that Thron moved around and had "explored" southern AB in 1902, but didn't establish a permanment residence until 1908.


15. Birth place for Thron

- only the 1900 US and the 1916 Canadian indicate birthplace as Sweden; others, including the MN State indicate Norway - note that the 1905 MN State is too difficult to read to determine Norway or Sweden

- - 7 Jul 1860; baptised 30 Sept 1860; birth in Särnia sokken i Sverige -- Thrond Tobiason Movald confirmation record, 14 Nov 1875 at St Olaf Lutheran Church, Otter Tail Co (image 18 [of 275], listed under Ashby, MN, Pelican Lake Lutheran, US Evangelical Lutheran Church of America records, - this listing has a number of confirmation lists for a number of years, but the organization the listings jumps years and then goes back and also the record has confirmation listings fro Rock Prairie Lutheran Church and for Pelican Rapids as well as some for St Olaf; it is likely that the pastor for Pelican Rapids took on the confirmation teachings of various congregations


[ 25 Sep 2013 ] Conclusion:

The evidence is convincing that the Tobias Movold family left Tolga and lived for a few years (maybe 10 years) in Irde parish in Sweden. See notes under his father; Husförhör book 1850-1860 - Tobais, Marit, Ole, Kirsti, Anna Maria born 23 Jul 1856 (här - here) and Thronn born 7 Jul 1860. And 1862-1882, page 73

This conclusion is based on the above Norway Parish Registers record (Leaving Tolga) and the Sweden Church Records - births for Anne, Thron, and Karenius. The 1916 Canada (Prairie Provinces) Census and the 1900 US Census records Thon's place of birth as Sweden; however the other census records for Thron and all the census records for Karenius record their place of birth as Norway.

Conflicts [ 14 Oct 2012 ]


1) Birth 7 Jun 1860

There are a number of sources (Ancestry Public Trees, census data etc) that records his birth location as Norway. But as indicated above, it is clear that his birth was in Sweden, 7 Jun 1860, Idre Parish, Kopparberg Co, Sweden. See point 14


2) Death. Conclusion: 1923. As of 3 Dec 2016, although there is no conclusive evidence on date of date, I have recorded it as 30 Jul 1923 (using the Findagrave post, last point below). Additionally, there is no conclusive evidence for burial, thus I have recorded burial at Foremost Cemetery. BUT:

Update: 24 Aug 2018. Findagrave website. A contributing member to findgrave, Linda, had posted a scanned copy of Alberta Registration of Death Certificate (saved in his folder on my PC); posted on 27 May 2018 . The cert was recorded on 30 July 1923 and the information is from 'informant', Leo Movold with his address as Foremost (Leo is the son of Thron)
- date of death is 29 Jul 1923 at age 63 years and 16 days; born in Tolgen, Norway [this birth location is not correct]; - died of heart failure
- place of death NW quarter of Sec 4, Twp 7, Range 11 (this should be about 5 kms north of the town of Foremost, at the junction of Hwy 879 and township road 70)n
- lived at location for 4 years <1919>; in Canada for 15 years <1908.
-place of interment - Municipal Cemetery

Note: 'Linda' likely received this death record from the Alberta Provincial Archives (see my document under Family Genealogy to see how to access the death index

NOTE: the findagrave post records "plot unknown"
On 27 Jun 2022: I walked the Foremost Cemetery and could find no indication of any grave marker. There were a number of grave outlines with no marker, and I suppose Thron was one of those




- Family History books, Sandstones ..... records the year 1922, but Wrentham ... records 1923 - both the submissions were made by Bernice Thompson (nee Movold) who is the daughter of Leo Movold who was the son of Thron Movold; however, some of the information submitted by Bernice have been found to be incorrect (for example, the submission to the Fosston, MN Centennial book
- myhertage.com - linda petsch - records death as 3 Dec 1922, but no evidence/source given
- Ancestry.com Siverson-Hove-Algaard-Dunrud - Public Member Family Tree - records death as 12 Mar 1922, but no evidence/source given; some other Public Member Trees (Lloyd Highet, Dumont, ) record 12 Mar 1922, but again no evidence/source given
- no record for Thron Movold - Alberta Genealogical Society Cemetery index "30 Cememteries in the Taber, Bow Island, Foremost Area, Index to Grave Markers and Burial Records", 1996; and |" Foremost Cemetery, NW-17-6-11-W4, Foremost, Alberta" (Judy Wasyenko1983), but in "10 Cemeteries in the Stirling, Warner, Milk River, Coutts Area, Index to Grave Markers and Burial Records",1996 - Leo Movold and wife are listed, as is Mervin Movold (for Masinasin)
- my review of images of The Lethbridge Herald (from www.ourfuturesourpast.ca), I did not find death notice or obituary in the following editions: Dec 4-9, 13, 15 1922, with reviewing the Foremost (Dec 2, 8) and Warner (Dec 6); Mar 15-20, 1922, including Foremost news 17 Mar; Mar 14-17, 1924; Dec 6-13, 1923; Mar 13-21, 1923 including Foremost news on 17 Mar
- Findagrave post notes that Thron died on 30 Jul 1923. Unfortunately there is no photo of gravestone making it unclear where the date is derived from, possibly on the tombstone or from the cemetery burial records.


Conflicting information (points 8 & 9)

1. Emigration to Canada

- these sources indicate arrival in Canada in 1902; BUT
(a) both the 1911/1916 Canadian Census notes that immigration to Canada was 1908
(b) Thron Movold family is recorded at Eden Twp, Polk Co, MN in the 1905 MN State Census (1 Jun 1905) and indicates he has lived in this jurisdiction for 14 years (possibly 17, although difficult to read)
(d) Ab homestead records: Thron reports that he made a homestead entry on 3 Nov 1908 and was resident as of 7 Jul 1909, although he may have stayed on the homestead the winter of 1908-1909 and the family came in the spring/summer of 1909

Thus the 1902 date is incorrect, although he may have been in the area working or scouting around. The most likely emigration is Jul 1909 when he states he was on the AB homestead in Jul 1909 ^398,1868

1. Confirmation - 1875, 14 Nov 1875, Otter Tail Co, Minnesota, United States. ¹⁸⁶⁴ Thrond Tobiason Movald confirmation record, 14 Nov 1875 at St Olaf Lutheran Church, Otter Tail Co. Thrond's confirmation record records his birth as 7 Jul 1860 and that he was baptised on 30 Sept 1860. His birth location was in "Särnia sokken i Sverige". In reality his birth and baptism record in the Sweden Church Records in Idre parish, in Kopparbergs county. Both Idre and Särna parishes were a part of Norway but came under Swedish control in the mid 1700's.

14. Death 1923, 30 Jul 1923, Foremost, Alberta, Canada. ¹⁸⁶⁶ Findagrave post notes that Thron died on 30 Jul 1923. Unfortunately there is no photo of gravestone making it unclear where the date is derived from, possibly on the tombstone or from the cemetery burial records. The local history book (Sandstones to Settlers) records his death as 1922 at one point and then later his death as 1923 (his article starts on page 506).
