[ 25 Sep 2013 ] Conclusion:

The evidence is very probable that the Tobias Movold family left Tolga and lived for a few years (maybe 10 years) in Sweden.
This conclusion is based on the above Norway Parish Registers record (Leaving Tolga) and the Sweden Church Records - births for Anne, Thron, and Karenius as well as the "household questioning: (see below). The 1916 Canada (Prairie Provinces) Census and the 1900 US Census records Thon's place of birth as Sweden; however the other census records for Thron and all the census records for Karenius record their place of birth as Norway.


NOTE: the line above Tobias Movold family in the Tolga Ministerialbok for "Leaving Tolga" is: Erik Eriksen Sagen, wife Nille Olsdatter, and son Ole Eriksen; also leaving for Idre. Nille is a sister to Marit and our family's Olava Olsdtr Røstbakken

5. 1870 US Census (as of 1 Jun 1870) for Tordenskjold Twp, Otter Tail Co, MN; also lists daughter Kjersti, age 18 (born abt 1852, Norway. HOWEVER, Anne is not listed --- ++++ --- therefore likely she died between 1868-1870 (1900 US Census notes 6 children, 4 living (Ole, Thron, Karenius, Kjersti);
if Anne died, making her the 5th child, then who is the 6th child that died???)

- also lists Peder A Grinde as a servant, occupation as farm laborer, age 62, Widower, born in Sweden, Natuarlization

1895 - Eden Twp, Polk Co - 12 years in this enumeration district <1883>
1905 - Queen Twp, Polk Co - person 41, BUT persons 37 & 38 are Torger and Kirsti Olson (39 & 40 are two of the children, Olaus and Arthur; BUT Marit is not listed with Tobias, Kirsti, Thron or Karenius




10. US Naturalization - MN Naturalization Records, 1854-1957

11. Armena History book indicates a daughter by the name of Kirsti (not listed in the 1880 US Census under Tobias' household). Kirsti is also mentioned in the "First 100 years, 1883-1983, Fosston, MN" - this source says she married Louis Torgerson of rural Fosston and had one son, Orrin Torgerson.

BUT:: MN Death Certificate Index for Louis Torgerson states that his mother's maiden name was Movold

12. Tobias had the first store in Fosston, Polk County, MN (tape by Martin Mikkelsen - personal correspondence - indicates this was a saloon?) and also homesteaded near Fosston. In the "First 100 years, 1883-1983, Fosston, MN", Tobias left Otter Tail Co in 1881, moved to Fertile, Polk Co, MN (merchandising business) and then 2 years later to Fosston [1885] - store. In the "history of Fosston" a drawing of Fosston town around 1887-1888, says, Toby Movold grocery (see article in folder)

13. death date for Tobias and burial from "First 100 years, 1883-1983, Fosston, MN". Kingo Lutheran Cemetary NE edge of Fosston, in Rosebud Twp; church address is 220 Johnsen Ave. S

- HOWEVER [ May 2008 ] - no tombstone at Kingo Lutheran Cemetery in Fosston, MN based on a walk through by Rueben D Grue, May 2008

NOTE: on the LDS (familysearch.org) website, someone has entered information on the Tobias T Movold family - this is indicates that Tobias and Marit were buried at Poplar River Cemetery, just north of Fosston - I can not confirm the accuracy of this

16. excerpt from "First 100 years, 1883-1983, Fosston, MN" was submitted (boards.ancestry.com) by Bernice B Thompson from Warner, AB, Canada; a great-granddaughter of Tobias Movold.

17. Marit Movold's obit from The Thirteen Towns, Fosston, 22 Apr 1904

- died due to old age on Friday, Apr 15 at 12:45 PM
- was healthy and strong until last fall [ 1903 ], but then confined to her bed
- born 18 May 1820 at Tolgen, Norway; in 1854 married Tobias Movold
- 14 yrs later <1868> emigrated, first to Otter Tail Co
- 1883 they came to Polk Co
- for 9 yrs [ 1883-1892 ] divided her time evenly between Polk Co and Otter Tail Co [ ? staying with son, Ole ? since it appears that he took over or bought his father's homestead in Otter Tail Co; of course she also likely visited/stayed with her sister, Ingeborg Narjord ? ; Olava Grue may have been around, but Simon and Olava, along with Thore had moved to Grant Co ]
- in 1891, they bought a farm in Eden Township - lived there for 7 yrs [ until abt 1898 ] and then moved to Fosston
- she leaves her husband, Karinius of Fosston, Mrs Torger Olson of this vicinity, Ole of Wetaskiwin, Alberta, and Tom Movold [ Thron ? ]

18. Tobias Movold's obit from The Thirteen Towns, Fosston, 14 June 1907

- Tobias was the first "to engage in business" 34 years seeing the town grow from his one store [ see point 12 above ]
- born in Tolgen, came to US in 1868, homestead in Otter Tail Co
- in 1881 came to Fertile [ Polk Co, MN; abt 50 kms west of Fosston ] - merchandise business for 2 years
- [ 1883 ] came to Fosston and carried on with the same business
- retiring [ no year given ] he went on an extended trip - Pacific Coast and then to Norway
- 1892 - returned to MN, he purchased land in Eden Twp - lived there for 7 years and then sold to his son, Thron and then moved to Fosston and under the 'care' of his son, Karinius
- survived by Ole, living in Alberta, Canada, Mrs Torger Olson of Turtle Lake, Thron who is farming in Virginia, Karinius of Fosston
- funeral was held Saturday

(death announcement on 7 June 1907 ); "Tobias Movold Dies"
- "...the end has been looked for [?]ere this time and he has been hovering on the brink for weeks"
