Ingeborg Thoresdatter Grue (Broen), 1821-1903

Written by Rueben D Grue, 25 Sept 2014; revised 21 Oct 2014

Introduction:

For some time I have been researching the family of Ingeborg Thoresdatter Grue, a sister to my great grandfather Simen Thoresen Grue (1823-1903). Ingeborg emigrated from Norway and along with her son, John E Broen came to the Armena, Alberta district in 1899. She died in 1903 and is buried at the Old Skandia Cemetery, just west of Armens. Her son John farmed in the Armena district until his death in 1933. What happened to her other son, Thore Olsen, and her daughter Tina? I have found very little information on these two family members; the majority of the this article revolves around these two individuals.

What I know:

The following outlines information that I have found that are likely to be highly accurate (source citations are provided with the Legacy family data)

.. Ingeborg was born on 26 Jul 1821 with her parents residence as Narbuvoll in the Tufsingdalen area, south of Os in Hedmark county, Norway
.. According to a number of documented sources she had a son out of wedlock. He was Thore Olsen, born on 6 Aug 1855.
.. She married Engebret Johnson Moen on 15 Jul 1863 at Os
.. John and Ingeborg's children were John Engebretsen Broen (born 13 Dec 1863) and Tina Engebretsdtr (26 Jun 1865). These births are documented in the Norway Paris Registers
.. Ingeborg's family was living on the farm Broplads nørdre in the 1865 Norway Census
.. Engebret died on 10 Feb 1866
.. after Engebret's death, Ingeborg rented a room on different farms (see confirmation record for both John and Tina)
.. In 1881 John E Broen left for North America. He first went to Grant Co, Minnesota (to his cousin, Thore Simensen Grue). By 1892 to La Moure Co, North Dakota and then in 1899 he and his family moved to Armena, Alberta, Canada
.. Ingeborg T Broen (Grue), daughter Tina, and son Thore Olsen left Norway in 1882, along with Thore's wife Marit Iversdatter born 1843 and daughter Olava born in 1876, for North America. Ingeborg likely first went to her brothers', Simen Thoresen and John Thoresen who were both living at that time in Grant Co, MN.
.. Later Ingeborg went with her son John to LaMoure Co, ND. John had been in ND by 1892 which is the date of his marriage to Mary (Maria) Eklund who had emigrated with her parents to ND from Sweden
.. Ingeborg received a patent for her homestead entry on 31 Jul 1896; John received his patent on 1 Apr 1899. Ingeborg's homestead was on the SW¼ of Sec 14, Twp 133N, Range 66W of the 5 th (160 acres); John's homestead was on the SE¼ of Sec 14, Twp 133N, Range 66W (160 acres). Both are in Lamoure Co, ND and are less than 5 kms north of Kulm, ND
.. in 1899, John and his family, along with his mother immigrated to Armena, AB and homesteaded
.. At least two members of the family (John and Ingeborg) adopted the family surname of Broen after leaving Norway. I am not sure of the orgin of Broen. Ingeborg's family was living on the farm Broplads nørdre in the 1865 Norway Census. This "cotter's farm" likely was at one time a part of the larger Moen farm in the Tufsingdalen area; the record indicates that they rented a room at the farm (likely in exchange for farm labor)

Possibilities:

The following comments are possibilities regarding Thore Olsen and Tina. For the most part, these possiblities are speculation particularly in terms of the "right family". I have found little evidence of any facts for either Thore Olsen or Tina.

Thore Olsen Broplads-Broen family

As indicated above, Thore along with his wife and daugther left Norway in 1882, but I have not been able to find a possible records for Thore Olsen in the US or Canada. The one possibility is from the 1885 MN State Census for Elbow Lake township in Grant Co, MN record for Mary Broen age 40 born in Norway [there is some other writing after Mary; maybe Maryit or "W J" or possibly even the letter "I"] and Olava Broen age 9 born in Norway. Mary and Olava are listed with the family of Ole A Berg, household #63. It is not uncommon in the US that the given name Marit is recorded as Mary, but this record has Mary's age of 40 meaning that her birthdate would be about 1845. Marit Iversdatter was born in 1843 according to the Norway Parish Registers, so it is possible that this is a different person. However with the recording of the surname of Broen (a fairly uncommon surname), it is likely the difference in the birthdate was due to an recording error in the MN State Census. Olava's record of age 9 does correspond with her her birthdate of 1876 (from the Norway Parish Registers).

Based on the above, I believe this is likely the correct family. If this is the correct family, why wasn't Thore Olsen also recorded? Since he wasn't recorded, either he was living and working someplace else or he had died. At this point, I have not been able to find further information for Thore Olsen or for either Mary (Marit) or Olava Broen-Broplads.

Tina Engebretsdtr Broen family

The available information for Tina is very little and although much of the following is speculation, I think that my final hypothesis is most likely correct.

There is a record for a person named Tina age 19 in the 1885 MN State Census for Stony Brook Twp, Grant County, MN. She is listed in same family (family number 58) as Lars E Wold (age 27) along with Isabel (age 62), Andrew (age 6 months thus his birthday in Aug or Sept 1884) and Emma (age 24); all individiuals are recorded with the surname Wold. This record has a number of interesting aspects. First of all, this family is recorded just after family #57, John T Grue (John T Grue was a brother to Ingeborg, Tina's mother) and on the prior page is family #43, Simen T Grue (my great grandfather and another brother to Ingeborg) and family #44, Thore S Grue (my grandfather). In addition to this, there is a record under family #62 (Martinus Larsen), John E Breony (Broen?), age 22. This all seems to be a bit more than coincidence. It was common that immigrants would first come to an area in North America where they have relatives living.

A second aspect of this record is that the age for Tina puts her birth year as 1866, or possibly 1865. The age of 62 for Isabel makes birth as 1823, and thus a 2 year difference if this person is Ingeborg. Why is the given name Isabel? The only possible explanation is that the enumerater recorded the name incorrectly and that it should have been recorded as Ingeborg. However, there is likely no way to prove this one way or the other.

Another interesting aspect of the 1885 MN State Census record for family #58 is the name Lars E Wold. Who is Lars E Wold? The Bygebok for Os and family researchers Tonseth Nergaard and John Midtdal all indicated that Tina was married or at least had a relationship with someone named Lars Kåsen. The Bygebok for Os states they were married in 1882 (gift 1882 med); however, there isn't a record in the Norway Parish Registers (Narbvoll or Os or Røros) of a marriage of Tina or Thina Engebretsdtr. The Norway Parish Registers record Tina leaving the parish in 1882 and records her as a daughter of Ingeborg. Of note, the Norway Parish Register records Lars Evensen Kaasen as leaving the parish in 1880; a more modern spelling of Kaasen is Kåsen. Tonseth Nergaard records Lars Kåsen as a partner with Tina. John Midtdal also records Thina in a married relationship with Lars Kåsen. It should be noted that both Tonseth Nergaard and John Midtdal have not provided any source information. Tonseth Nergaard records Lars Kåsen's parents as Even Olsen Kåsen (1817-1907) and Ingebor Arnesdtr Tollan (1827-1888). Searching the Norway Parish Registers I have found a birth record for Lars Evensen (born 4 Jun 1857, bap 28 Jun at Os) and his parents as Even Olsen and Ingeborg Arnesdtr Hegkaasen. Of course, this doesn't directly connect Lars E Wold with Lars Evensen, who may have been named Lars Evensen Hegkaasen; however, it is likely they are the same person.

A clue to who Lars E Wold was also arises from John E Broen's obituary of 1933. In this obituary it is stated that John is survived by a nephew Einar L Wold of Fosston, MN. This would mean that Einar is the son of John's older half-brother Thore, or a nephew of Thore's wife. But more likely, Einar would be the son of John's only sister Tina. However, the child recorded in the 1885 MN State Census is named Andrew, born in Aug/Sept 1884 since he was 6 months old in May of 1885 and was born in MN. Is this another recording error and the child was actually Einar Wold?

I have researched to see if there is any record for Einar Wold living in Fosston in the US federal census data. The 1930 US Census (Fosston) records the name of Einar Wold, a salesman with a hardware store. His age (at his last birthday) is recorded as 45 and thus a birthdate of 1885, possibly 1884. His parents were Norwegian; he also was married to Josephine. Einar is also recorded in the 1920 and the 1940 US Census for Rosebud Twp (Fosston Village). On Findagrave, Einar and Josephine are recorded as being buried in Kingo - Landstad Cemetry in Fosston (his birth as 1885 and his death in 1949); he also recorded on the MN Death Index but with no birth date was recorded nor was his mother's maiden name recorded. On the MN Marriage index there is a record of marriage on 20 Jun 1918 in Polk Co for Einar L Wold and Josephine Christianson.

In 2008, I was at the Clearwater County Historical Society Museum in Shevlin, MN to conduct some genealogical research on the family of Claus and Oline Soffie Grue. At the museum I found a family photo album for Klaus J Grue; this contained my photos of familiar members of the "Grue family". One photo was of a child between 6-8 years named Einar Wold. The handwriting for the first name is hard to read; I initially recorded this as Erivan, but on further examination, the name could easily be Einar. There also was a photo of Andrew and Mary Wold with two young children, unnamed. Was Andrew the father of Einar?

To answer the above question, I researched earlier census records for Einar Wold. The 1910 US Census records Einar Wold, age 24 living with the Andrew E Wold family in Brandsvold Twp, Polk Co, MN (just north of the town of Fosston). Einar is recorded as a nephew of Andrew, the head of household. Einar is also recorded in the 1900 US Census with the Andrew E Wold household in Polk Co. His birth is recorded as Aug 1884 in MN; again he is recorded as a nephew of Andrew. In the 1895 and the 1905 MN State Census, Einar again is recorded with the Andrew E Wold household. These records are consistent and fairly convincing that Einar was a nephew of Andrew, not a son, and most likely the son of Andrew's brother or sister.

The above leads to the question of who Andrew E Wold is? A general search on ancestry.com brings a record for the 1940 US Census for Costra Contra Co (a city in the greater San Franciso area). The 1940 US census records Andrew and Marie Wold in the household of Tyness and Selma Hoiland; Selma was a daughter of Andrew. Andrew, Marie and Selma were residents of rural Polk Co, MN on 1 Apr 1935. Further, the California Death Index on Ancestry.com records Andrew's death on 30 Nov 1953 in Costa Contra Co, CA and records his mother as Ingeborg and father's surname as Hegkaasen with Andrew's birth as 24 Aug 1861. Researching through with the Tolga Ministerialbok (Norway Parish Registers) for 1861, there is a record on page 83 line 78 for the birth of Anders on 24 Aug 1861, with father as Even Olsen Hegkassen and mother Ingeborg Arnesdatter. These are the same parents as Lars E Wold who born on 4 June 1857 (also recorded in the Tolga Ministerialbok). It should be noted that the given name Andrew is English for the the Norwegian given name of Anders. This is quite convincing evidence that Andrew and Lars were brothers. One further connection with Andrew and Lars comes from the Compendium of History and Biography of Polk County, MN, 1916 (accessed on archive.org). This book contains a biographical sketch for Andrew E Wold on pages 217-218. This sketch notes that Andrew came to the US a year after his brother, Lars who had first come to Otter Tail Co, MN. The Norway Parish Registers record Lars Evensen Kaasen leaving Narbuboll in 1880; Anders Evensen Kaasen leaving in 1881 (another brother, Arne Evensen Kaasen born in 1854 leaves in 1881, along with his wife Kirsti Ingulsdtr born 1858 and daughter Ingeborg born 1879).

Although the above information is not proof, it leads to the likely conclusion that Einar L Wold was likely the son of Lars E Wold (the initial 'L' likely refers to Lars) and also therefore the son of Tina Broen.

There is one other possible connection for Lars E Wold. The WA State Digital archives record the marriage in 1892 of Lars E Wold and Sarah L Prestlien. Sarah was the widow of Nils Mikkelson Prestlien (1848-1891), a brother to Iver Mikkelson Prestlien, married to Kjersti Simensdtr Grue. If this is the same Lars E Wold, he died in 1895 at Silvana, Washington. Another likely family connection is that Even Olsen (Andrew and Lars' father) was the son of Even Nilsen Søndmør; Even Nilsen was a brother to Mikkel Nilsen Søndmør (he had changed his surname to Prestlien when he was married and was the father of Nils Mikkelson Prestlien).

From this review it appears that both Lars and Andrew had adopted the surname of Wold after arriving in the US. In general, the word "vold or wold or wald" means "forest or woodland" in Norwegian. It is common that immigrants to North America adopted a surname based on a farm that they lived at in Norway or a local landmark.

Hypotheses:

1) Tina Engebrestdtr Broen had a relationship with Lars Evensen Hegkassen who was known as Lars Evensen Wold in the US. Together they had one child, Einar Lars Wold, born in Aug/Sep 1884 in Minnesota, most likely Grant Co
2) Tina died between 1885-1895, most likely in Grant Co, MN
3) Thore Olsen died between 1882-1885, most likely in Grant Co, MN

Much further research is needed to determine the truth of the above hypotheses. Some areas of research include:
(1) Evidence of the death of Tina Broen and Thore Olsen through in-person research for death records or returns at the courthouse in Grant Co (Elbow Lake)
(2) Evidence for the birth record of Einar L Wold, possibly born as Andrew Wold at the courthouse in Grant Co and Einar's parents
(3) Further research on Lars E Wold and the Hegkassen family in US. I have recorded some notes under Tina Broen file.

Note: I have not recorded any footnotes, although all the 'facts' that I have indicated are recorded with the source citations provided on my Legacy database. Therefore this article needs to read in connection with the Ingeborg Thoresdatter Grue family.

You may also see this person referred to as a losjerende or logerende (a lodger). The inderst could be a seasonal worker on the farm or could be self-employed as a tailor, shoe-maker, etc."
--- [ 22 Sep 2014 -- I would think this would mean that the family was very poor in that they only had a room or bed in a building at the Femundshytte farm since they only were a seasonal worker; it is likely they didn't get any patch of land for any vegetables, etc. So how did they live - hunting/fishing and/or food from others?

- the above Public Member Tree has an article (unsourced) about the orgin of the surname Wold: "The Norwegian surname Wolden is of local origin belonging to the category of surnames derived from the place where the original bearer of this surname once lived or held land. The name is derived from the Germanic word "wold", in Old Norse "wald" meaning "forest or woodland". Thus the bearers of this name came from or have ancestors that came from a farm situated in or close to such a place. The "-en" suffix of the name is the Norwegian definite article "The". Since there are many places by the name of Wolden or Volden it was no uncommon to add a prefix to the name for clarity: Fevolden or Listadvolden ar just two examples."

- from Wald or Volden, but Volden was also known as Nóren or Nøren; however 'the suffex' "... vold" is fairly common in farm or location names - Narbuvold; for various farm names in the Tufsingdalen area, see http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?show=88&uid=262735&urnread_imagesize=gigant&hode=nei&ls=1&lc=x%259CK%25B42%25B2%25AA.%25B62%25B4R%25CAT%25B2.%25B62%25B5R222%25B60%2502%25B1%2581b%25C5J%25D6%2599V%2516%2516%25D6%25B5%2500%25C8%25AE%2509%25F4

Most Likely: Tina Broen

1885 MN State Census - Stony Brook Twp, Grant Co , image 71 ancestry; family 58
- Lars E Wold, age 27 <1858>, wife Tina age 19 <1866>, then Isabel, female age 62 <1823> - most likely Ingeborg?, all born in Norway
- then Andrew, age 8/12 <by 1 Sept 1884>, born in MN ??? birth date would be about right, but Andrew, --- I think this is actually Einar, likely a recording error; it might be possible that he later became Einar when he went to live with his uncle, Andrew
- Emma Wold, age 24 born in Norway <1861> [ not in Tolga Ministerialbok, 1860-1862; 19 Sep 2014 ]

bullet  Noted events in her life were:

1. Emigration - 1882, 1882. 561 Leaving Narbuvoll, Os, Tolga parish for North America

2. Residence, 1885, 1 May 1885, Stony Brook Twp, Grant Co, Minnesota, United States. 574 Lars E Wold, Tina, Isabelle age 62 born in Norway [this is most likely Tina's mother, Ingeborg Thoresdatter Grue born 1821], Andrew (age 8 months; birth prior to 1 Sep 1884 and is likely son, Einar L Wold), and Emma age 24 [unclear of relationship to either Tina or Lars)

3. Death - 1886, 9 Aug 1886, Grant Co, Minnesota, United States. 572 Death Record: Tina E Wold, age 21; died in MN and was born in Norway

4. Furneral - 1886, 11 Aug 1886, Grant Co, Minnesota, United States. 575 The cemetery where Tina was buried is uncertain - I have found no burial records. Her funeral (Jordfästede) was held on 11 Aug 1886 as recorded in the United Lutheran Church Records (Elbow Lake, MN). From what I have been able to determine, it appears she lived about 5 kms north/west of Wendell, MN. The Norwegian Lutheran Church at Wendell had not been established (it started in 1891). It appears that the closest church would have been in Elbow Lake of Fergus Falls.
