Email to John Oberg, 6 Mar 2014:
Skinnerhagen and Nøren - both are farms, about 2 kms south-east of the town of Os and about 15-20 kms north of Narjordet (along the valley of the river Nøra). I have not found Nøren, but I have found Skinnerhagen on the following map, <http://gammel.norgeskart.no//adaptive2/default.aspx?gui=1&lang=1>
and on <http://www.visitnorway.com/us/vn/map/?aid=2983&articlex=262796&articley=6552462.5&source=arti>
These maps require using the zoom to find it. From what I have been able to find out, as early as 1723, there was a farm by the name of Skinnerhagen, also known locally as Saragarden. It is likely that in the 1600's Skinnerhagen was created from a larger farm or land holding. At some point in time, Skinnerhagen was divided into smaller units, with one unit named Holm. Holm was later divided with one unit called Nøren. So Skinnerhagen and Nøren would likely have been "next door to each other". From one source I found that at Nøren there was a sawmill that many people had a share in. In the digitalized property book for Os (on <http://www.arkivverket.no/>) there is a notation, roughly translated by me: "deed on 8 Feb 1857 from Ole Pedersen to Esten Olsen Narjord" and then it looks like the sum of 100 spd (speciedalar [an old currency]. That is the only reference I could find. Both the farms Skinnerhagen and Holm are recorded in the 1838 and 1886 Matrikkel listing of farm properties and are recorded in Oluf Rygh's listing of Norwegian farms.

In the 1865 Norwegian Census Esten Olsen's family is recorded on the farm Skinnerhagen. It is on this page that there are a number of information or "sorting" columns with one being "school district" with the name of Nøren. I don't the time frame for school district '96 current or 1865?

(1900 US Census) but there is not another child listed in the 1865 Norway Census nor any US Census nor Emigrants from Trondheim or the Quebec Passenger lists --- most likely this is Sigrid Kjerstine, born 1860 -- --- this is the most likely, a recording error (see note under 1900 US Census

13. Death, Fergus Falls Daily Journal - Esten

- died at 12:15 AM at his home of cancer of the throat

14. Death, Fergus Falls Daily Journal - Ingeborg

- came with her husband to Winneshiek County, Iowa, in the spring of 1869 and to Otter Tail in the summer of 1870

15. John Mason's book, History of Otter Tail Co, 1916

a - under Oliver Olson, page 448

- came to America in 1869, settling for 1 year in Winneshiek Co, IA (note: Esten's sister, Johanna and Mikkel Pederson settled there)
- while in Winneshiek, Esten "...made a trip to Tordenskjold township, Otter Tail county (also it is likely Simen Grue and Tobias Movold also traveled)
- in the fall of 1870, the family moved from Iowa to Otter Tail - first living in a dug-out and later in a log house
- "Mr. Olson was the first clerk in the district" - likely referring to the school, since the first school was held at Esten's home (see below)

b - under C E Olson, page 330

- Esten Olson Norgaard and Ingeborg are "...the oldest living settlers in Tordenskjold township."
- patenal grandparents (of Carl Edward) were Ole Narjord and Sigrid Estensdatter - Ole was a labourer, Sigrid the daughter of a soldier of the War of 1814 [ 15 Aug 2012; this may not be correct since Esten Jonsen Grue died in abt 1798 (accorrding to Klokkervang, page 8; the Napoleanic wars started around 1793, but Sweden became apart of the "Second Coalition" - "The Second Coalition was formed in 1798 by Austria, Great Britain, the Kingdom of Naples, the Ottoman Empire, Papal States, Portugal, Russia, Sweden and other states". See, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napoleonic_Wars; --- it is possible that Esten Jonsen Grue was killed in some type of action or in training in 1798; however, it doesn't appear that Sweden had sent forces during the "Second Coalition" against France and Napolean but much more research would need to be done; there was a 'war' in 1814 between Norway and Sweden known as the Swedish-Norwegian war that had resulted with Norway mustering an army against Sweden as a result of the Napoleanic wars Treaty of Kiel of 1814 where the King of Denmark and Norway ceded Norway to Sweden; Sweden was aligned with Russia and England; Denmark-Norway was aligned with France (this information is from Wikipedia.org, Swedish-Norwegian War of 1814; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish-Norwegian_War_(1814) ]

- they in 1869 came to America, settling at Waterloo Ridge, Winneshiek county, near Spring Grove, IA and worked on a farm until 1870
- 1870 to MN - travel by rail over to St Cloud and from there with an ox team
- 160 acre homestead, "...which at that time was not only a wilderness, but a very tangled wilderness"
- built a dug-out and there spent the first summer; later built a log house where the "present modern buildings stand"
- both [Esten and Ingeborg] are healthy - farm has prospered and grown (now owns 320 acres); "...associated with other citizens of the township in founding the church [Tordenskjold Lutheran Church]

- Otter Tail Co seat was first located at Tordenskjold on 28 Feb 1870 with plans to build county buildings (at least a court house and jail at a cost of $1000) at Hoff's Mill's - a small nucleus of buildings, including a sawmill, general store and residence (a dam had also been constructed here, but it was washed away uring a heavy rainstorm in July 1874); the "town of Tordenskjold" location is at the very close to the junction of Back Lake Road and County highway #39; the Otter Tail Co seat was re-located to Otter Tail City on 16 Feb 1871; in 1872 the county seat was moved to Fergus Falls
- Tordenskjold's post office was not located at Hoff's Mills; 1884 Plat for Tordenskjold puts the PO on the north 1/2 of the SE of Section 29, just off the road (likely the initial road way for present County highway #39) on land owned by Niels Prestlien (son of Mikkel and brother to Iver Prestlien)
- School District # 20, called Rolling Prairie School, was organized on 14 Mar 1871, located on the NW quarter of Section 29 just off present County highway #39 and about .5-1 mile south of the junction with 180th Street - this was only about a mile (cross-country from Simen Grue's home place); initially a log building, with a frame building built in 1890 - when the school was closed, the building was moved to the "treshing grounds" museum at Dalton
- 5 April 1870 - first town meeting held - officers elected - one of the Supervisors was T Movold and "Overseer of Highways" for District 2 was Tobias Movold
