bullet  Research Notes:

NOTE: 23 May 2020: Some revision has been made to the following, in light of the work of Manuel Aguilar Hendrickson and additional information. "Ancestor Report" [Ahnentafel Report] that I received from him in 31 Mar 2019. Also FamilySearch FT again the with most of the information by Manuel with some information added in Apr 2020; and the US Evangelical Lutheran Church Records.

BASED on the Östmark church records and Manuel Aquilar Hendrickson's work, I have researched and recorded Michael Hendrickson's (b 1831) ancestors. AND based on this research, we have a "double relationship" with Michael Hendrickson b 1831. My 7th great-grandfather was Anders Andersson Hotakka (1669-1711). His daughter was Annika Andersdotter, b 1702, and she was married Henrik Hansson Valkoinen (1690-1729)

There are a number of Family Trees on Ancestry.com regarding the Michael Hendrickson family in the US. These include the Spänges Släkttråd Family Tree, Bernstsen Family Tree [see notes under Otto W Hanson], Simonds Family Tree, and Mill Slättråd Family Tree. These seem to be a bit more accurate than ones not mentioned, but none have any definitive proof that the family is in fact "our relations" (other trees have little source information and appear to have copied from other trees). They all record that Helja Andersdotter (it seems that she used the given name of Ellen in the US, although some records in the US use the given name, Helen) is the daughter of Anders Stephansson (Steffansson), but I have not found any direct evidence of this fact in the US. One aspect to keep in mind about the Ancestry.com Public Member Trees is that it is very rare that any 'tree' has detailed research and source information. However, that being said, there is really very little reason that the 'owners of the tree' would deliberately misslead information about the family connections, even if some details (such as accurate dates etc) are wrong or missing or conflict with each other.

I am quite sure that the early US records (1870-1885 census data and the land records of 1865) are most likely correct. I am quite certain of Michael's death on 30 Jun 1890. He was killed at a railroad crossing, after being hit by a Great Northern Railroad train (I created a short document, utilizing newspaper articles; see file folder). After this, Helen or Ellen (Helja) moved into the village of Cokato where she is recorded in the 1895 MN State Census and the 1900 US Census. Helen is not indexed or found on a review for Cokato Village in the 1905 MN State Census. And, I have not found a death record or notice. There is a brief news note from the Willmar Tribune (5 Dec 1900, page 5, col 3) under "Atwater" news, "...Mrs. Nelson was called to Cokato, on Saturday, on account of the serious illness of Mrs. Hendrickson." Mrs Nelson is likely Nellie Nelson (also known as Helen, Ellen, and Helja; she married John Nelson, and they lived at Atwater in 1900 according to the 1900 US Census).

The above note from the Willmar Tribune does not prove that Helja (Helen or Ellen) Hendrickson died in Dec 1900 or in early 1901, but it is likely. I initially recorded her death as "between Dec 1900 and Mar 1901" but with very little evidence to support a date of death. However Manuel ... has linked a FamilySearch transcription: Helene Henrikson death 17 Dec 1900, age 69

BUT: reviewing the FamilySearch FT on 23 May 2020 and 6 Sep 2021, Manuel Aguilar Hendrickson on 31 Mar 2019 has posted indexed MN deaths and burials index from Family Search that note her death as 17 Dec 1900
[ https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FDDW-42Q ]

[ the following may not be correct: 23 May 2020 ]
Some of the above Family Trees record some details about some of Michael and Helja Hendrickson's children (Ida, Otto, Emma, and Emil), but they do not record any direct or original evidence to link them directly with the parents (other than naming them as children of the parents). As a result, I have noted the possible or disproven death of Michael and Helja Hendrickson with "0 level of surety" and the information on some information as "1 or 2 level of surety".

see point 6 below

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. birth/baptism: Not recorded in the Birth/baptism pages for 1830 to 1832. I'm not sure why this is the case. I have reviewed the records for 1830-1832 and there is no one by the given name, Helja, recorded. Her specific date of birth (3 Dec 1831) is recorded in the Husföfhör book, AI:11, page 244, and this date is consistently recorded in subsequent volumes - AI:12, 13, and 14.
- birth is recorded as 3 Dec 1831 by Manuel Aquilar Hendrickson on FamilySearch but NO birth/baptism record

2. There is not conclusive evidence but this is mostly likely, Helja Andersdotter, born 3 Dec 1831 and the daugther of Anders Stephansson (Steffansson) and Helja Svendotter. BUT corresponds to other Family Trees

page 509 (AI:21) records Helja Andersdtr born in 1831 married to Mickel Henriksson born 1831 at Sörmark - Stenbråten ...? with children, Helja born 18 Feb 1856 (CI:377), page , Kasja born 27 Aug 1858, and Emanuel born 5 Aug 1860, and Johan born 1 Jan 1863 and died 14 Mar 1863 or maybe 1865

moved here in 1862 with ref page 303 - on this page, Helja Andersdotter born at Mellmarkstorp

AND, 11 Mar 1863 to Amerika with ref to page 11 (moving out records); actual page is 22, line 11

++++ this the is same page for Sven Anderson -- so the families traveled together === +++ along with Anders Olson and Ingeborg Andersdotter (another sister)

in book, AI:18, page 223, farm Sörmark - Stenbråten
the family is recorded
in book, AI:19, the farm Stenbråten apparently starts with page 375, BUT this is Långerud ???

++ book, AI:20 (1861-1866), page 303 farm Sörmark- Stenbråten, the family is recorded and referenced to page 509 in 1862

3. marriage, 1 Jan 1854 (26 Nov 1853, banns), but this does not record the names of parents
http://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v9163.b286.s563&page=main/index
- the Husförhör book 1856-1859, AI:16, page 190 (Stenbråken) and AI:17 page 335 (Millmark-Stenbråken), has a note for marriage of 1/1 54
- also the above Hus... book on page 335 has Helja Andersdotter born 1831 at Mellmarkstorp

4. book, AI:14, 1846-1850, page 292, Långerud

on page is Helja Andersdotter born in 1847 with reference to coming rom page 197 on 1849 with leaving ... O emrhries ???? 1850
(same page as sister, Karin Andersdotter)

6. update: 16 Nov 2018. And further update on 6 Sep 2021 FamilySearch family tree, id LTPJ-G68 (information added Aug-Sept 2017). Some information added by Manuel Aguilar Hendrickson on some of their children, son Otto Edward, son William August, and daughter Ida Marie and on her file, he has written in Spanish, that she was born, "En una granja cerca de la tienda de Rice Lake" - google translate, "on farm near Rice Lake store". However, there doesn't appear to be a lot of new information that I do not have. Manuel Aquilar Hendrickson is a family relation.

- FamilySearch FT uses the Finnish Family name of 'Hotakka' for Helen Andersdotter (b 1831) and for her husband, Mickel Henriksson 'Valkoinen'. This FT also records that Michael Henriksson died on 30 June 1890 at Dassel, Meeker Co, MN. Manuel .... records a 'translated' source citation from the Swedish Newspaper, Svenska Folkets Tidning, 9 July 1890: Farmer Michael Hendrickson from Cokato was run over last Monday and killed by a railroad train 30 miles east of Darwin. One of the horses was also killed and the carriage shattered." This corresponds to my information that I summarized on the "Death of Michael Henriksson, 1890" article ...." ... Kings crossing near Darwin and Dassel at the Great Northern crossing."
- this FT information records that Mickel Henriksson 'Valkoinen's' parents were Hindrick Hindricksson (1784-1790) and Elin Mårtensdotter (1790-?), both born in Östmark, he at Ärnjsön and her at Gransjön

-- see Michael Hendrickson's research page for a summary of Household Records from Östmark parish.

BASED on the church records and Manuel's work, I have researched and recorded Michael Hendrickson's (b 1831) ancestors.

7. US Evangelical Church Records: Minnesota, Stockholm, Wright county. Stockholm Lutheran Church. Ancestry collection

image: 714: this records Michael Hendricksson, born 1831, and wife Heljä Andersdotter b 1831; both born at Östmark
They were received 1867. On the far right is "Utgå .... "??? - I'm not sure or the word, but likely "left" the church

children:
daughter Helen, born 11 Dec 1855, Östmark; [ this is likely daughter, Helja. But different birth date - Östmark parish record lof birth on 18 Feb 1856 is likely most accurate since it is recorded close to the actual event ]
daughter Lena, born 1858 at Östmark; birth name as [Karin, b 23 Aug 1858]
son August William, b Jan 1864 at De Kalb, Illinois
son Emanual, b 1 Aug 1860 at Östmark
daugther Emily Elisabeth, b 30 Jul 1866 at Minneapolis [ daugther Emma ]
daugther Ida Marie, b 28 Jun 1868, Moores Prairie, Stockholm [image 1046]

- this is all the information there is from this church record - reviewed again on 6 Sep 2021
- it not clear when they might have left this congregation (not noted in the "dismissal' section)
- also Michael (Mickel) died in 1890, but there is no record of his funeral (I also had reviewed funeral records from Cakato Lutheran Church in Cakato for Helja's funeral record - I reviewed 1899-1910 on 23 May 2020, BUT a funeral is NOT recorded] 5709,6818,6819

bullet  Noted events in her life were:

1. Residence, 1856-1859, 1856-1859, Östmark, Värmland län, Sweden. 6820 Farm/locality: 1856-1858, AI:16, page 190 (Stenbråken) and 1859, AI:17 page 335 (Millmark-Stenbråken)

2. Residence, 1860-1863, 1860-1863, Östmark, Värmland län, Sweden. 6821 Farm/locality: Sörmark-Stenbråten (1860-1862, page 303 in book AI:20) and Mellmarkstorp or Millmarkstorp (1863, page 509 in book AI:21). Mickel born 1831 at Sörmark-Stenbråten and Helja Andersdotter born 1831 at Mellmarkstorp, and children, Helja Mickelsdotter born 1856, Kasja Mickelsdotter born 1858 and Emanuel Mickelsson born 1860.

This same record notes the family leaving Östmark parish on 11 Mar 1863 for North America.

There is NOT conclusive evidence that Helja Andersdotter born in 1831 recorded in this record is the same person as Helja Andersotter born on 3 Dec 1861 to parents Anders Stephansson (Steffansson) and Helja Nilsdotter. However, this is most likely the case (see her research notes section).

3. Leaving, 1863: Leaving for North America, 11 Mar 1863, Östmark, Värmland län, Sweden. 5709,6821,6822,6823 Leaving Östmark parish for America.

4. Land, 1865, Jun 1865, Stockholm Twp, Wright Co, Minnesota, United States. 6824 Land: E½NW¼, Sec 24, Twp 118 N, Range 28 W; 80 acres; (this would be on corner of Morrison Ave and 95 St SW/County Rd 30 SW).

US Track books record that Michael Hendrickson made a homestead entry payment of $10 on 9 Jun 1866 (receipt 2382), with final payment 17 Nov 1871, (#1039). And with faint writing and a bit hard to read, it is recorded that Michael had come onto this land [or had staked the land] on June 18-19, 1865. Michael received the letter patent for the homestead on 25 Sept 1872 (BLO-GLO records).

5. Residence, 1870, 1 Jun 1870, Stockholm Twp, Wright Co, Minnesota, United States. 6825 Micheal Hendrickson, head, age 39 [1831] born in Sweden, farmer. Ellen [Helja], wife, age 39 born in Sweden. Daughter Ellen [Helja] age 14 [1856] born in Sweden; daughter Lena age 12 [1858] born in Sweden; Son, Emanuel age 10 [1860] born in Sweden; Son William age 6 [1864] born in Illinois; daughter Emma age 4 <1866> born in MN; daughter Ida age 2 [1868] born in MN; son Arthur age 3 months [Mar 1870; but in col 13 for the month, May] in MN.

Post Office: Moores Prairie

From this record, it is most likely that when the family first came to the US, they likely lived for a brief time in Illinois (birth place for son William) and around 1865 they came to Stockholm Twp, in Wright Co, MN.

6. Residence, 1875, 1 May 1875, Stockholm Twp, Wright Co, Minnesota, United States. 6826 Michael Hendrickson, age 43 born in Sweden. Wife, [?] Ellen or Helja age 43 born in Sweden. Children, Lina age 16 and Emanuel age 14 both born in Sweden; Wilhelm age 12 born in IL; Emma age 8, Ida age 6, Otto age 4, Emil age 1 (last 3 children, born in MN)

7. Residence, 1880, 1 Jun 1880, Stockholm Twp, Wright Co, Minnesota, United States. 6827 Michael Hendrickson is recorded as Michal Hindrickson, age 49 born in Sweden. Wife, Ellen age 49 born in Sweden, August V [or W; must be Wilhelm), age 15 born in IL; Children all born in MN, Emma E age 13, Ida M age 11, Otto E age 10, Emil age 7, Robert age 3.

8. Residence, 1885, 1 May 1885, Stockholm Twp, Wright Co, Minnesota, United States. 6828 Michael Hendrickson age 54 born in Sweden. Wife, Ellen age 53 born in Sweden. Ida age 17, Otto age 15, Emil age 12, and Robert age 8 (all children born in in MN).

9. Residence, 1895, 1 Jun 1895, Cokato, Wright Co, Minnesota, United States. 6829 Ellen Hendrickson age 63 born in Sweden. In the same house is Ole Hagglund, his wife, and Carrie and son Johan age 9, all born in Sweden and having lived in the US for 2 yrs (no indication of a family relationship).

10. Residence, 1900, 1 Jun 1900, Cokato, Wright Co, Minnesota, United States. 6830 Helen Hendrickson (recorded as Hindrickson), age 68 born Oct 1831 [?] in Sweden, Widow, mother of 11 children with 8 living, emigrated in 1863, been in US for 36 yrs.

11. Death: Death, 17 Dec 1900, Cokato, Wright Co, Minnesota, United States. 6831 After the death of Michael Hendrickson, Helen (Helja) moved into the village of Cokato where she is recorded in the 1895 MN State Census and the 1900 US Census. Helen is not indexed or found on a review for Cokota Village in the 1905 MN State Census. And, I have not found a death record or notice. There is a brief news note from the Willmar Tribune (5 Dec 1900, page 5, col 3) under "Atwater" news, "...Mrs. Nelson was called to Cokato on, Saturday, on account of the serious illness of Mrs. Hendrickson." Mrs Nelson is likely Nellie Nelson (also known as Helen, Ellen, and Helja; she married John Nelson, and they lived at Atwater in 1900 according to the 1900 US Census).

See her research notes and her death transcription on FamilySearch.
