bullet  Research Notes:

1. source: 1860 US Census for Bergen Twp, McLeod Co, MN ; post office - Plato [ancestry.com]

- lists Ole, Berit's name as Betsy, Mary age 5 <1855>, born in WI, Julia age 3 <1857>, born in MN & Nils age 1 <1858>, born in MN
- value of personal estate at $200
- first person listed in dwelling 22 and family 22 is Ole Torbenson, age 26; value of real estate at $1000

a . 1855 WI Census for Wingville, Grant Co - no recording for Ole and Berit - enumeration was to be for the first day June 1855. Ole and Beret's brother Elias had left on an exploring trip to MN (The Immigrant Wagon, page 9, 10) but Carl Martin Roan does not say when they left, but he does mention that they arrived at Glencoe, MacLeod Co, MN in the early part of Aug, 1855. So, it is possible they weren't recorded, since it was only the male head of household that was recorded in the 1855 WI census. Ole and Beret's first child, Berthe Mary, was born in 9 Oct 1855 (p 11); Ole arrived back at Wingville after the birth.

In the spring of 1856, Ole and Beret Johnson, and Beret's brother Ole, left Wingville for MacLeod Co, MN [top, page 12)

+++ no listing in 1905 MN State, Little Sauk, Todd Co [ 14 May 2009 - scan ]

*** the child listed in 1865 MN State is not listed in the 1970 US Census or any of the other MN State Census; with the likely birth date between about 1863 and 1865 (after Caroline, born about 1862, and before Charlie, born 1866), the date does not "fit" with other sources - Carl Martin Roan doesn't mention this person, nor the rootsweb.ancestry data bases.

*** perhaps this child was a niece of Ole's and was living with them for a short period of time ???

8. Souces: I have used these (along with Census information) as sources for descendants (I have not cited each of these sources on each event (only on each family, under Research)

ancestry.com --- Public Member Trees - Daniel Haglund; wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com - database from Merry Keith; Carl Martin Roan - "an Immigrant Wagon"

++ These sources provide information that is applicable to the family and descendants

- Carl Martin Roan (family tree) does not include information about descendants; however, his work is direct family information and therefore is the most realiable
- Merry Keith's data includes some source information, mostly US Census +++++ 19 Feb 2012 - database no longer active on World Connect
- Daniel Haglund's data does not include sources; therefore information is not verified (other than it is in agreement with the other three and to some extent US Census

++++ 19 FEb 2012 - World Connect does have some additional database BUT NONE provide any citations or sources for the information

9. ancestry.com -- One World Tree - submitted by unknown, thus information is not verified

- gives some additional dates of birth/death for Caroline Roen Johnsen & Issac Granum (both died in Sundre, AB)

10. Civil War Data base - Vesterheim.org [ link, http://civilwar.vesterheim.org/j/joh/ ]

JOHNSON, OLE
MN Hatch's Independent Battalion Cav Co C. Residence: Glencoe, McLeod County, Minnesota. Born in Norway. Civil War: Age 39. Enrolled 14 Apr 1864. Mustered 15 Apr 1864. Private. Served in Indian and Civil wars. Discharged from the service with his company, 22 Jun 1866. Sources: (MINN p771) (MCIW p606)

- there are a number of people named Ole Johnson on the above data base, but this person is likely the correct person, since his age corresponds to his birth, place of residence corresponds, and the date of enrollment corresponds with the record in The Immigrant Wagon by Carl Martin Roan, page 30 1037
