  Research Notes:

Summary:

Marit Svensdtr Nygaard was my 1 cousin, 4 times removed. Her mother, Kari Nilsdtr Søndmør [1808+1852], was a sister to my 3rd great grandmother, Kirsti Nilsdtr Søndmør - my direct family line ancestor from Olava Olsdatter Røstbakken family line.

Marit Svensdtr's father was Sven Olsen and he was a brother to Ole Olsen Vestgård Røstbakken [1789-1864], my 3rd great grandfather who was married to Kirsti Nilsdt Sønmør - they were the parentsof Olava O Røstbakken

Thus I have double family relationship with Marit Svendstr.

In 1861, Marit Svendstr Nygaard was married at the Os church in Tolga parish in Norway to Anders Rasmussen Røsten, 1832-1905. Anders and Marit lived in a few areas, including Tolga-Os parish in Hedmark Co, Målselv parish in Troms Co, and in Øvre Stjørdalen in Nor Trondelag county. In 1880, Anders and Marit, along with their children, Sven, Richard [Rikard], Nils, Marit, and Elen Marie emigrated to N America [they had 2 other girls and a boy who had died young]. They travel to Trondheim and from there a boat likely to Glasgow and then from Glasgow across country to Liverpool. They boarded the ship Moravian and sailed from Liverpool on 22 Apr 1880 arriving at Quebec, Canada on 12 May 1880.

They most likely traveled west through the Montreal and Toronto areas and to Lake Huron and from there by boat to the Detroit area or by boat up Lake Huron to Lake Michigain to the Milwaukee area. And then across country to Minnesota and to the area around Dalton MN in Otter Tail County. Marit Svendstr Nygaard's brother Nils and his family had emigrated in 1869, ending up at St Olaf Twp in Otter Tail Co. Nils had died early in 1871, but his wife, Sigrud Marie Iversdatter Prestlien [1828-1915] and family continued to farm after his death [note that Marit's brother Nils' wife was also a family relationship through through through the Søndmør and the Grue family lines - see their pages and ancestors]

By 1885, the family had moved to Badger Twp in Polk County, MN [close to 200 kms to the north of Dalton, MN]. It appears that even as early as the summer of 1880, Anders made a homestead entry or declared the NE¼ of Sec 7 as a future homestead. It appears that the family may have lived on the land before making official payment on homestead quarter since they are recorded there in the 1885 MN State Census.

Anders died in 1905. As indicated, Marit's death is uncertain. At the time of Anders' death, only son Richard Anderson Rusten is living - all of the other of Marit's children had died. I have not found a death record or an index that records her death. Nor have a found her recorded [or indexed] in the 1910 US Census on either Ancestry or FamilySearch. I had reviewed the scanned census pages for 1910 at Badger Twp, but she is not noted.

There must be a record of burials at this cemetery and some records for the Sorum Lutheran Church, but Where ?????

...... Sorum Church closed on January 3, 1912
- this cemetery is sometimes referred to as the Wold Cemetery in old obituaries. Sorum Synod Congregation was organized in 1885 by O.T. Wold, Ole Dovery, P.N. Sevelrud and Hans O. Lee who served as trustees. This congregation held their meetings in the schoolhouse in Sec. 8. In 1909 most of the families moved to Canada and the congregation was left with only four families. These four were Henry Anderson, Ole Dovery, O.T. Wold and Hans O. Lee. The church closed in January of 1912. [remaining members joined with Saron Lutheran a few miles east]

Birth: May 26, 1836; Tolga Hedmark fylke, Norway
Death: Oct. 5, 1917, Becker County, Minnesota, USA

"The family also used the last name "Rosten". Merit's first name was typically spelled "Marit". Marit Svendsdatter Nygaard, from Øversjødalen, Norway was born 26 May 1836 to Svend Olsen Vestgård (Andershaugen), and his wife, Kari Nilsdatter Søndmør. She married Anders Rasmussen Røsten on 30 Jun 1861. The family emigrated to America around 1879. "

Note: I have recorded death and location of death as "disproven" on Legacy database --
- on Familysearch.org (MN death & burials, 1835-1990 index), Mari Rosten died on 5 Oct 1917 at Audubon, Becker Co, MN
[findagrave id 189828548] === BUT this person's parents are recorded as Engebret S Jenna and Marit Jenna, and this person was married to Paul O Rosten, 1832-1919. I also viewed the 1900 [Paul O Rosten b 1832 and he emigrated in 1866 and Mary E, b Dec 1835 and she emigrated in 1875] and the 1910 US Census for Audubon Twp, Becker County, Minnesota** - Paul O Rosten and Mari both born in Norway, and in 1910 they were married for 27 years, both in their first marriage. Both Census records record that Mari or Mary E was the mother of no children and that no children living [their findagrave post comments, "Mari and Paul Rosten did not have any children."
- all the Family Trees [FTs] that I have viewed [Ancestry, FamilySearch, Geni.com] record Marit Svensdatter Rusten's death as 5 Oct 1917 and that she died in Becker Co, MN. BUT ...

So, it appears that someone had used the FamilySearch.org MN death index for "Mari Rosten" and then recorded 'my cousin, Marit Svensdatter Nygaard' Rusten's death as 5 Oct 1917. It appears that Dale Rosten then used this date and location on his findagrave post.

Conclusion: from the review noted just above, there is major doubt that the findagrave for Marit Rusten at Badger Twp, Polk Co is accurate. In fact, I think it is wrong.

- I looked at 1910 US Census records for Badger Twp, Polk Co, MN ... I viewed the 8 pages scanned on Ancestry and Marit Rusten is NOT recorded, but Marit's granddaughter and daughter of son Richard Rusten [b 1871] is recorded on page 1 - Manda Rusten, age 11 b in MN, and recorded as a 'boarder' [... viewed again on 8 May 2025]
- after finding Amanda/Manda in the 1910 census, I then did a general 1910 search for Marit Rusten, born 1836+-1yr in Norway and lived in MN. With this broad search, a person name Mari Rosten [age 75], wife of Paul O Rosten, age 78, and both born in Norway and living at Auborn Twp, Becker Co, MN. The record shows that both have been married in their first marriage for 27 years. And they are living at the same place in the 1900 US Census and records farm helpers and 4 daughters
- after finding Paul O Rosten and Mari Rosten, I then searched Findagrave, and Mari Rosten's birth as Dec 1835 and her death as 5 Aug 1917 [findagrave id, 189828548]

-- so if this is the record that Dale Rosten used, then the date and location is incorrect ... this is also noted on MNHS people search website
