Basics (see my Legacy database for source information/citations and for other research notes)

Michel Michelsson's birth and death are not certain. From my research and using other Family Tree researchers,
his birth is likely sometime between 1630 and 1640; on my Legacy database I have noted his birth as about 1632 (see point 2.a. and appendix one).

His death is likely between 1695 and 1700, and this is how I have recorded this on my Legacy database.

His marriage date and location is unknown. His wife's given name is most likely Britta and her efternamn (patronymic name) is most likely "Mattsdotter".

Part A:
What is known with a high surety/confidence level:

1. Both Michel Michelsson and his wife were alive at the end of Dec 1685 when their daughter Kerstin was born.

2. Michel is not recorded in the Gävleborg taxation record [Gävleborgs läns landskontor], volume EI3:b on Arkivdigital collection for the year 1696. He is however, recorded in 1695 (link to Riksarkivet, <https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/A0005613_00159#?c=&m=&s=&cv=158&xywh=2346%2C1419%2C2156%2C1792>). This volume has some written comments on the far right side. However, I couldn't read what the comments were. So I made a post on 30 Sept 2018 requesting a translation on the facebook group, Swedish American Genealogy Group. See appendix two for a complete record of the post and response. Andreas Engström, a group member, responded on the same day with the following:

"Bonden Michell berättas wara mycket g:l och siuk" - "The farmer Michael is said to be very old and sick". Hence there being no [tick mark] in the first column, the one for the male head of the household. He was tax-exempt for being old and weak. His wife is "taxable", though, and also the two sons and one daughter and two male farmhands, all at least 15 years old (younger children were not included) [the actual record has "tick marks" for wife, 2 sons, 1 daughter in law, and 2 daughters; there are no marks for male farmworkers].

Michel Michelsson is recorded in the 1694 Mantälandger, along with his wife (although there is no tick mark), 2 sons (and daughter-in-law), and 2 daughters. Michel Michelsson is not recorded in the 1696 Mantälslandger, although his son Matts Michelsson (b about 1663) is recorded and then 3 years later in 1698 is son Michel Michelsson (b 1672) is recorded as being taxed on Kårböleskog.

2. a Since Michel Michelsson is not recorded in 1696, it is reasonable to assume that he turned age 63 around this time, the age that a person is no longer taxed. If he had turned 63 years old in 1695, then his birth would have been about 1632. As Andreas Engström notes that he comments say that he was "very old and sick" in 1695.

2. b. The name Michel Michelsson is first recorded on Kårböleskog in 1678 according to the tax records. He may have been on Kårböleskog as early as 1674, but there are no taxation records for the years 1674-1677 on Arkivdigital.

3. The 1724 death record for my seventh great grandfather, Michel Michelsson (1672-1724), records his death at Kårböleskog, but does not record his parents.

4. The 1771 death record for Malin Michelsdotter (a sister to my seventh great grandfather), notes that she died at Kårböleskog and that her father was Michel Michelsson from Kårböleskog (the name of her mother is not recorded). Following the Household records, it is noted that Malin lived most of her life at Kårböleskog and also that she was not married. Malin was age 93 at the time of her death, and therefore her birth was about 1677.

5. The 1742 death record for my seventh great-grandfather's sister, Karin Michelsdotter, records that she was born at Kårböleskog and that her father was Michel Michelsson and her mother was Britta Matsdotter. Karin was age 81 at the time of her death, meaning that her birth would have been about 1661.

5. a. On 18 Oct 2018, I requested assistance from the Swedish American Genealogy facebook group for interpretation of daughter Karin Michelsdotter's death record (see Appendix 3). Regina Nordstrand responded and agreed that Karin's parents were Michel Michelsson and Britta Matsdotter. Regina had attempted to translate some of the comments - see her information in appendix 3.

On 19 Oct 2018 (because of the time difference, the date is recorded as 20 Oct) I posted the same question on Anbytarforum. Leif Lundkvist responded on 19 Oct 2018: "Your interpretation is correct."

And on 21 Oct 2018, Bertil_ (Bertil Strömberg) had replied and named her parents - he also provided a full English translation that I have included in appendix 3.

6. The earliest Färila parish birth/baptisms records are found at Färila parish in Vol C:1, 1680-1743. For the year 1680, there is a record for the "20 Trinity … Michel Michelsson on Kårböleskogn, Lars". And, for the year 1685, there is a record for "Die S Steph … Michel Michelsson on Kårböleskog, Kerstin." There is a gap in some birth/baptism records for the years from 1686 to about the early 1690's. I have reviewed most of the pages in the birth/baptism book (C:1 volume) but I have not found any other births on Kårböleskog prior to 1700.

Conclusions:

1. The evidence shows that a person named Michel Michelsson had lived on Kårböleskog as early as 1678 and possibly as early as 1674.
2. Michel Michelsson was born about 1632. He had at least 6 children (as documented on my Legacy database)
3. His wife was known as Brita Matsdotter, and she was likely born aroud 1640, althought this birthdate is not confirmed.

Part B:
What is known with a moderate level surety/confidence (probably or most likely to be accurate):

There are 2 other family researchers that support the above conclusions (from Part A). However, these family trees do not provide supporting sources.

1. DISABYT [Jan Engström] record his birth about 1630 on one post, and then on another about 1640. On the second post, she notes the birth of his son (also named Michel Michelsson, born 1672). In her second post, she notes that his father (our eight great-grandfather) was also name Michel Michelsson and that he was born about 1690 in Finland.

2. The record for family data on the "Genealogy Shortcuts website" [Släktforskningssajten Genvägar] records his birth as 1635. This site also records the name for his wife as Brita Mattsdotter and her birth as about 1640 (but not her date of death); there are however, no sources for this marriage. This site also says that Michel Michelsson's father was named Michel Michelsson, born about 1604 at Wasa or Vaasa, Finland [on the western coast of Finland, about 425 kms north of Helenski].

NOTE: There is an Anbytarforum post that notes a different location in Finland
link, <https://forum.genealogi.se/index.php?topic=10274.msg153543#msg153543>; re: Lars-Erik Almberg (bottom 1/3 page); posted: 16 Mar 2000

This posts makes some initial coments and then, .....

Part C:
What is known with a low level surety/confidence

1. There is one family tree (FT) on FamilySearch (id LZS9-TGT) that records Michel Michelsson's birth as 1635 and his death as 1700. This is likely the same person even though the birthdate is not sourced. Additionally this FT notes that his wife was Margareta Matsdotter Kirjalainen born about 1639.

2. Kirjalainen is a Finnish Family Name and some other researchers have recorded this same name. See my document, "Mickel Mickelsson Huiskainen, b 1687". Torbjörn Näs had posted on Anbytarforum in 1999 and in this post he referred to 2 brothers named Mickel and Mats Persson Kirjalainen who were early settlers at Lillskog and North Los, respectively. It is possible that the above person (Margareta Matsdotter Kirjalainen) was a daughter of Mats Persson Kirjalainen, but there is no direct evidence of this. Additionally there is no evidence that she was married to 'our' Michel Michelsson. In fact, we know that he was married Britta Matsdotter. It is possible that Britta is a "nickname" or a variant of Margareta, but that is a a bit of a stretch - see my research notes under her Legacy page.

3. The above FamilySearch FT records 12 children, but I have only 6 children (see my Legacy data). And this FT records Michel Michelsson's father as Mickel Larsson from Tjärnvall and that Mickel Larsson's father was Lars Staffansson born about 1550. However, as I have below there are a number of people named "Michel Michelsson" in Färila parish.

See research note number 7 (below). Margareta Michelsdotter from Kårböleskog as a witness to the baptism of Karin Matsdotter (b 1691; father Mats Michelsson at Kårböleskog). It is possible that she is a daughter to the above Michel Michelsson and Britta Matsdotter, but I have not found any other reference to her. Thus, I have not recorded her as a child; she could have been someone to came to Kårböleskog as a servant, but was born someplace else.

4. There is one other FamilySearch FT (id KNHG-P4X). This has similar information to the other FT (and I made a correction on his son also named Michel Michelsson born 1672).

Other resources and notes:

As I have been researching Michel Michelsson (born about 1632 and died bet 1695-1700) on Kårböleskog, I have made many google searches. One point that becomes obvious is that there is more than one person named Michel Michelsson in Färila parish. There are numerous Family Trees and forums or blogs that include the name Michel Michelsson. It is quite difficult to keep track of everyone. The given name "Michel" was very common, and any of his children would be name "Michelsson or Michelsdotter".

In order to assist in tracking the various people named "Michel Michelsson" or a patronymic (efternamn) of "Michelsson or Michelsdotter", I had decided to complete a name and place study of the some of farms/villages in Färila parish, and with this I created a number of documents. Also I found blogs and posts that included Michel Michelsson in Färila parish. These documents are all saved on my PC and Google Drive (generally the path is under, Kristina Eriksdotter ancestors and siblings and then to the folder, "Documents, etc - Michel Michelsson" and these are available if requested by others). Specifically I researched:

(1). Lillskog - Michel Michelsson and Malin Olofsdotter
(2). Risarv - Staffan Michelsson, 1660-1727
(3). Tjärnvall - Mickel Larsson, bet 1601-1603 '96 after 1667
(4). Ancestors of Per Michelsson, b 1714
(5). Mantalslängder excel sheet (taxation records)
(6). Mats Persson, b 1785
(7). Michel Staffanson med hustru Margeta/Märta Persdotter
(8). Mickel Mickelsson Huiskainen, b 1687
(9). Staffan Persson at Ryyskog.
(10). Per Nilsson b 1759
(11). Per Persson, b 1723 and Staffan Oloffsson (abt 1610) - Loskog

In addition to the above, documents I also created two other documents. (1) "Färila and Kårböle" (includes information on Kårböleskog), and (2) "Färila church books - other-special". This document covers some specific information about some Färila church books that Arkivdigital doesn't specify. It also includes some other resources and information that I used while researching such as "Finnish Family Names" along with some links and information from the Facebook Group, Swedish American Genealogy and other groups. Additionally I have included some links to various websites, along with a couple of other family researches that I have utilized (Jonas Bjors, Torgny Henriksson, and Froberg and Larson Families of Carlton Co., Minnesota data). I will likely continue to update this document, as I come across new information even if the information is about or from an other parish.

Appendixes

Appendix One

Michel Michelsson (b 1632) is first recorded taxed at Kårböleskog in 1678 (see my excel sheet Mantalslängder taxation records). In the previous available book in 1673, Staffan Olufsson is recorded as taxed at Kårböleskog. I have not found any taxation record on-line covering the years 1674-1677. Michel Michelsson (b 1632) may have been at Kårböleskog as early as 1674, but the only thing that is certain is that he was there by 1678.

Who is Michel Michelsson's (b 1632) father? This is unknown, although one family tree, "Genealogy Shortcuts website" (see point 3 below) records his father at Michel Michelsson born 1604 in Finland, but no source is given, and so this may or may not be accurate (I am skeptical that this is accurate, but it is of course possible).

The first time that we find the name "Michel Michelsson" in the Mantalslängder is in 1653 being taxed at Risarv (the previous years there is only a grouping of people under the category, "finnar". This Michel Michelsson would have to be at least 15 years old (a person was not taxed before the age of 15) and so his birth would then be earlier than 1639 (thus, a birth about 1635 is reasonable). However, it is NOT possible to determine if the person named Michel Michelsson at Risarv in 1654 is the same as the Michel Michelsson being taxed on Kårböleskog in 1678. This is a possibility since the person in 1654 at Risarv is NOT recorded at Risarv in 1678 or later. And it is possible that Michel Michelsson (b about 1635) was initially at Risarv as early as 1654 and then moved to Kårböleskog in 1678. In 1670 Michel Michelsson was recorded as taxed at Risarv, along with a person named Lars Oloffsson.

It is reasonable that this Michel Michelsson (b about 1632) died after 1695 ????, but I haven't found a date of death record although a Family search family tree records death as 1700, but I have no other evidence that this would be correct. See my document, "Risarv; Staffan Michelsson b 1660", page 7, point 5. As I have noted there is a family tree ( Froberg and Larson Families of Carlton Co., Minnesota) who records the Michel Michelsson born 1630 and died 1673 at Risarv. If this is accurate, then my above statements regarding Michel Michelsson (b abt 1632 and from Kårböleskog) first settling on Risarv could not be supported.

At this point there is no reasonable conclusion to be made regarding the possibility that the person named Michel Michelsson at Risarv had moved Kårböleskog around 1678.

Hi. Thanks for the acceptance to the group. I'm looking for translation assistance for a record of my 8th great grandfather, Michel Michelsson (abt 1632-bet 1695-1700). His death/burial is recorded in the Färila parish records from Gävleborg lån (vol EI:1, 1711-1769, page 45, 2nd from bottom on the 1st side - my 7th great grandfather).

The image is from Riksarkivet collection, Mantalslängder Västernorrlands (Gävleborgs) län 1654-1820, year 1695. Reference: SE/RA/55203/55203.26/24. Bild 159 / Sida 1561 (2nd side). I can't make out the comments on the left side of the page. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have tried to enhance the image, but the over-all quality is not great.

Andreas Engström post and response, 30 Sep 2018:

"Bonden Michell berättas wara mycket g:l och siuk" - "The farmer Michael is said to be very old and sick". Hence there being no 1 in the first column, the one for the male head of the household. He was tax-exempt for being old and weak. His wife is "taxable", though, and also the two sons and one daughter and two male farmhands, all at least 15 years old (younger children were not included).

My response: Thank you so much. This is great! I couldn't make it out. And thanks for the information on who was taxed. I estimated his date of death to be after 1695 (I haven't found a death record) and that his birth was around 1635 or possibly earlier; I understand that since there wasn't a "tick mark" in the first column, in had turned age 63, since he was the only name recorded in the taxation books since 1678 at Kårböleskog (I understand that after age 63 a person was not taxed). In the next year (1696), his son Mats Michel Michelsson is shown as the first male taxed, and in 1698, my 7th great grandfather, also with the name Michel Michelsson (1672-1724) is shown as the male taxed. It is interesting that only year 1695 on Mantalslänger for Färila parish that additional comments were written on the far right column.

If Michel Michelsson turned age 63 around 1695, then his birth would have been about 1632.

Concluision: Using all the information available, I have concluded that my 8th great grandfather was born about 1632 and this is the year that I have recorded in the Legacy database.

3. ... family tree at "Genealogy Shortcuts website" [Släktforskningssajten Genvägar;
link, https://genvagar.nu/show.asp?PersonId=203731 ]

- records Michel Michelsson's (b abt 1632) father as Michel Michelsson born 1604 at Wasa or Vaasa, Finland [on the western coast of Finland, about 425 kms north of Helenski] [ named after Swedish Royal House of Vasa; At first it was called Mustasaari or Mussor after the village where it was founded in 1606 - see Wikipedia ].
- the following is a link to the parish of Mustasaari-Korsholm and has a partial list of births BUT only starting 1671;
link, http://hiski.genealogia.fi/hiski/9iy5gy
- *** it looks like the records are recorded in "Korsholms församling", BUT there are likely to be many place names within the parish - many farms and villages. From a brief survey [20 Oct 2018] NO records from the late 1590's or earlier and nothing in the early 1600's and it seems about the earliest record is around 1670 , but most are mid-late 1700's and into the early 1800's

- this person's efternamn may very well be following a more modern, fixed surname process; AND NOT a patronymic naming pattern typical in Sweden and Finland??

4. Based on the gaps in the birth years as noted, it is likely that this Michel Michelsson (born about 1635) had additional children. However, I have not found any other children recorded in the Färila birth records on Arkivdigital or on other family trees - the noted Familysearch tree records other children, BUT I cannot verify those (some of the names appear to be other people living on totally different places that are not likely connected to 'our' family). [ 12 Apr 2018 ]

a. See Family search FT, id# LZS9-TGT

- this family tree has Michel Michelsson born 1635 from or lived on Kårböleskog married to Margareta Matsdotter Kirjalainen
AND that his parents Michel Larsson (b 1626 at Tjernvall - Tjärnvall) and Karin Palsdotter (b about 1600 at/from Kårböleskog)
AND that Michel Larsson's parents were Lars Staffansson born 1550 (from Finland) and unknown Michelsdotter born 1600 (from Finland)

AND Michel Larsson and Karin Palsdotter had 8 children: Olof b 1620, Thomas b 1622, Michel Michelsson (1624-1705), Lars (1626-1703), Margtha (b 1630 from at/from Kårböleskog), Michel Michelsson (1635-1700), Anna (1637-1727), and Olof b 1641. The location for births of the children is simply "Gävleborg".

As with most FamilySearch 'trees' source information is very scarce. None of these have any sources or verification - one note for Michel Larsson is that the information comes from Legacy NFS - which is from old information. There is also a note for a old dispute that says Lars Staffansson was married to "Han Tord", born 1580 and that they had one son, named Michel [of course, the efternamn would have been Larsson] and that his birth was 1604.

5. son Lars - I can't find anymore on him
- there is a Lars Michelsson at Los, but this is not likely the same person - re, says father was Michel Michelsson who is someone else that has been at Los

6. daughter Kerstin
- this is a pige Kerstin Michelssdotter at Tjärnvall (p 61); household of Purr Olofsson or Olsson, married to Karin Michelsdotter ?????

7.
*** witness - Margareta Michelsdotter from Kårböleskog for Karin Matsdotter, born 1691 baptism; and her parents Mats Michelsson and Karin Grelsdotter ;;; C:1, page 64

- the above FamilySearch tree (id# LZS9-TGT) records that Margareta Michelsdotter was born in 1682 and the parents as Michel Michelsson (1635-1700) and Margareta Matsdotter Kirjalainen (1639-?) . I have reviewed the birth records in vol C;1 for the year 1682, but there is NOT a person born in 1680-1685 named Margareta. So, it is likely that this tree has the wrong birth date or there is a slight possiblity that the child was not named or baptised since the baby may have been stillborn or died at childbirth and the family didn't get to a parish priest [??].

?? BUT then, who was the person named as a witness to a baptism in 1691?????

8. DISBYT: Jan Engström family data = family card [id 35341] ; date 27 Sep 2012

NOTE: some dates do not correspond

Michel Michelsson born about 1590, Finland
son, Michel Michelsson, born about 1640 in Färila [4]
son, Michel Michelsson, born 1675, Farila and married to Margreta Larsdotter, b 1675 at Los [3]
son, Staffan Michelsson, born 1700, Karbole, died about 1750, Farila;

Michel Staffansson, b 1735 died 1808; married 1763 Karin Olofsdotter, b 1744 died 1805

notes:
1 dates, etc correspond with my records
2 no record of birth in 1708 in Ytterhogdal for Brita Michelsdotter
no marriage in 1730 record in either Ytterhogal or Farila
no parents are recorded for Brita Michelsdotter
3 birth dates etc do not correspond with my information
4 various FT's record his birth, 1630 or 1635 or 1640

Jan Engström has another family card that puts "our Michel Michelsson (b 1672) and Margaret Larsdotter" children correct but has him born in 1681 but died in 1729 - the only Michel Michelsson that died in 1729 was from Lillskog (see my document, Lillskog)
- this incorrectly has Michel's birth as 1681 and died as 1729 and Margaret's birth as
- but interestly you can follow the children - Per Michelsson b 1714 - and down to Kerstin Jönsdotter (b 1852) and married to Jon Anderson b 1819 in Ytterhogdal ** she uses the name Jon Andersson Ny

- the other interesting part of this family card, is the person she names as Michel Michelsson's (1681-1729), father was Michel Staffansson (b 1662; d 1716 - EI:1, image 32) and that this Michel Staffansson's father was Staffan Olofsson (no birthdate) and then she has Staffan Olofsson married to Margaret Michelsdotter b about 1630 and that she was a sister to Michel Michelsson born 1640 (see above) AND that her father was Michel Michelsson born about 1590 in Finland (see above)
--- this does not correspond to my information that Staffan Olofsson born between 1610-1625, lived on Kårböleskog and was
married to Karin Olofsdotter (according to the death record of daughter Ingrid Staffansdotter (see my document, Per Persson
b 1723)

** But Katarina Sohlberg [id 603; date, 5 Dec 2003] dates of Michel Michelsson born 1672 and their children including two daughters, named Brita, with the first died annd the second Brita Michelsdotter born 1708 married to Staffan Michelsson
