Summary:

Lars Nilsen, 1807-1870 was my 3rd great uncle. He was the son of Nils Mikkelsen, 1765-1841 who was my 4th greatfather and who is my direct line ancestor of Lars Mikkelsen, b 1830.

From the information researched, Lars Nilsen was born at the farm/house/hut called Bakken, a little to the north of the Femunds hytte smelter complex on the west side of lake Femund. This area was called Femundshytte or Femundshytta and at times called Femunds plads - the village or community held a number of smelter workers and their families, all within short walking distance to the smelting complex. The Smelting complex was opened aroung 1743 and continued in operation until 1821/1822. At that time, this area was a part of Røros parish, but later came under the boundaries Engerdal parish.

The first of our family to work at the smelting complex was Lars' grandfather, Mikkel Larsen, 1729-1783. Nils Mikkelsen, Lars' father continued to work to at the smelting complex. It is thought that Lars Nilsen spent most of his time at Femundshytta. When the Femunds smelting complex closed in 1821/1822, many of the workers moved to the new site for the smelting complex at Drevsjø, a short distance from the southern shores of lake Femund.

Lars Nilsen married Sara Johnsdatter at Femunds hytte on 3 Mar 1833. Lars and Sara had 6 children [see point 3], with the first born dying within a year. I have not researched all of Lars Nilsen's children, but I have reviewed information on 2 of his childern [see their research pages] ... John or Jon Larsen married to Tora Sofie Embretsdtr Grue [she was my 2nd cousin, 3 times removed on my Grue direct line] .... and, Lisbeth Sofie Larsdatter. Lars Nilsen's children are my 1st cousins, 4 times removed.

Lars Nilsen died in 1870 at the age of 62. His residence [oppholsted residence] at death is unclear as it is hard to make out the handwriting. The last 5 letters are 'hytte', but first letter are uncertain. At first I had thought it is referring to Femundshytte since his name is noted as Lars Nilsen Femundshytte, with Femundshytte seemingly a place of residence. However, the place recorded under the "oppholsted" doesn't seem to be Femundshytte, but something '.....hytte' [possibly, Drivsjøhytte, re: smelting hut at Drevsjø].

His wife died on 14 May 1891 with residence as Femundshytte [her place of birth was Elgaaen].

.. since Sara Jonsdtr died 1891 and her death is recorded [and was indexed], it is likely that both Lars Nilsen and son Jon Larsen died after 1865 and before 1891 ... But ???
