  Research Notes:

Summary:

There are a number sources and many Ancestry Family Trees (FTs) that record differing dates for George Nelson's date of birth [see below, point 1]. But the Norway Parish Registers records his birth as 14 Jan 1847 at Leksvik parish, Nord-Trøndelag, Norway. This birthdate is likely to be the most accurate since it was recorded very close to the actual event, likely at his baptism. Another aspect from the Norway Parish Registers is that his birth name is recorded as Jørgen with his parents recorded from the farm Hougsbakken [Haugsbakken] as Nils Johannesen and Johanna Jonasdatter. Note that the farm noted in the births of George's siblings was also recorded as Hougsbaktröen.

Most of the US and Canada records record his name as George. Most of FTs and record his place of birth as Haugsbakken. When I did a general ancestry search [George Nelson, b 1845+/- 5 years in Nor; lived in Wisconsin and in Alberta Canada, 34 family trees are generated for the name Joergen (George) E. Nelson. I then clicked on "view all" and the list is generated. However, some of the FTs record his birth as 29 Jan 1847 at Haugebakke, Aust-Agder, Norway. This location doesn't make sense. I couldn't understand why this location and at first thought most of the FTs are wrong, and discarded looking at or reviewing them further. But later I decided on clicking some of those trees, and the birth location simply records Norway and some recorded his birth as Haugsbakken, Norway . Only a couple of the FTs record his birth location as Leksvik, Nord-Trøndelag. Where does this as 'Haugebakke, Aust-Agder, Norway' location come from? I discovered that if you start to type "birth location" on the Ancestry search page, starting with "Haug ..." Ancestry auto loads the location as 'Haugebakke, Aust-Agder, Norway'. It is so unfortunate that many family researchers just accepted 'Haugebakke, Aust-Agder, Norway' and didn't make any corrections. For me, this 'Haugebakke, Aust-Agder, Norway' was confusing, and since most FTs do not record any addition explanation, I had to spend a fair amount of time searching for more details.

There are 3 other aspects of the FTs that need an explanation. First, most FTs record Jørgen's father as Nils Johannesen Killingberg Haugsbakk. What I don't understand is the name "Killingberg" - the Norway Parish registers do not record the name "Killingberg". Secondly, the 'Rasmussen/Angam FT' uses the initial "E.", persumably as a middle name, but again the parish registers do not record "E." in relation to George. Thirdly, most FTs record his given name as Joergen - this must be a mistaken English translation of his given name. Norway records record his given name as "Jørgen" or "Jörgen".

George Nelson married Marie Berg, my half third cousin twice removed. Marie Berg's sister, Anna Christina Berg [b 1861] was married to a person named John Nelson and for while both families lived at Ashland, Wisconsin. I wondered in John Nelson and George Nelson were related?

The 'Rasmussen/Angam FT' provided a link to the 1880 US Census for Taintor Twp, Dunn Co WI. This records George and Marie Nelson and family, and also recorded in the same household, John Nelson as a brother to the head of household, George. And also recorded is Niels Nelson, also as a brother to George [I haven't researched for more information on Niels]. A few other FTs record the family of Nils Johannesen. By researching these FTs, and the records for Leksvik parish under Nord-Trøndelag 'county' Norway, Wisconsin 'pre-1907 vital records from the Wisconsin Historical Society, US Census Records, and other collections on Ancestry, I was able to find some additional information.

George's father Nils Johannessen, b 1820 and his mother had 9 children, with one boy dying at age 6. From my research, 4 of Nils' children left Leksvik parish in Nord-Trondelag for North America, and all were traveling to Ashland, Wisconsin:
George, b 1842left in 1869
John, b 1854left in 1879
Nicolai, b 1858left in 1879
Ludvig, b 1863left in 1884

Of course, I am not related to the Nils Johannessen family or his children. However, with both George and John, I do have a family connection through their marriage to two of Magnhild Jonsdatter Grue [1756-1832] great-grand daugthers, Marie and Anna, respectively. Because of this family marriage connection, I have entered the information on George and John Nelson's parents and their sibling. It may be possible that more information will be obtained in the future that impacts the information I have on my third half cousins.

I have researched the families of George Nelson and John Nelson. Additionally, I have researched Nicolai, although I have found very little information about him, beyond the 1895 WI state census - see his research page for the information that I did find.

There is a number of FTs for Ludvig - it appears that he use the given name of Louis in the US. It appears that around

- Holly Tomeren's database .. Jan 1847
- from grave marker at Five Mile Cemetery, Claresholm ... findagrave id 111020841 ... notes birth as 8 Jan 1850
- and a calculated birth based on the age at death recorded on the gravemarker .. Birth: Cal 8 Dec 1855
died: 11 Jul 1906 at the age of 50 years, 7 months, and 3 days
- Census records: 1880 US Census, birth 1842; 1900 US Census, birth Jan 1857; 1906 Canada Census (Alberta) birth 1847
- most Ancestry family trees record his birth as 29 Jan 1847

Noted events in his life were:

1. Emirgation, 1869, 14 Apr 1869, Leksvik, Nord-Trøndelag, Norway. 4298 Jørgen Nielsen left Norway on 14 Apr 1869. At that time he was single, and he may have been traveling with Bremer Olsen Mohold, age 37 since they both were recording as traveling to La Crosse, WI. There is no evidence that Jørgen was married in Norway. Additionally, the Leksvik parish "out-migration" records Jørgen as "single" or "bachelor" = ungkarl.

It seems as though the transcriber for Ancestry suggested he was married, since the next line [256] records "kone Kristina Oseaas" and then her two children. However Kristinna was a wife, of someone named Nils ...? Biosvold? [this name is the father of Kristinna's daughter Anna Marta, but the spelling of the name is difficult to read). See Leksvik birth records on Norway Digitalarkivet. Additionally, the Leksvik parish "out-migration" records her and 2 children leaving Leksvik parish, but her name is recorded as Christiana Guneried, with age as 40, and also records her son, Krog Gunerius, age 3, and daughter Anna Marta, age 6.

George married Marie Berg, daughter of Ole Olsen Berg and Johanna Jonsdtr Dahl, in 1874.987 (Marie Berg was born on 24 Nov 1856 in Nardo, Strinden, Sør-Trøndelag, Norway 970,988,989, baptized on 26 Nov 1856 in Lade, Strinda, Sør Trøndelag, Norway,989 died on 22 Jun 1907 in Claresholm, Alberta, Canada 970,990 and was buried on 28 Jun 1907 at Five Mile Cemetery, Claresholm, Alberta, Canada 988,991.)
