3. Military Service, 1943-1945, 1943-1945, United States. 3097,3100,3101 Orval served with the US Marines in World War II and was a Marine with the 5th Marine Division, in the South Pacific. His unit is recorded in the book, The Spearhead: the World War II history of the 5th Marine Division, as a Corporal with unit, the 13th Marines (page 279, image 293) - this was an artillery unit. The 13th Marines were involved in the Battle of Iwo Jima, from 16 Feb to 26 Mar 1945.

According to the BIRLS file, he enlisted on the 17 Nov 1943 and was released on 26 Oct 1945.
