bullet  Research Notes:

1. No 'official obituary' was published after Mark's death. See file folder "Journal of Mark's Last Week", written by Rueben D Grue, 9-19 Nov 2014

The following is a modified note, written by Rueben D Grue in late Nov 2014:

Mark was born on 11 Sep 1944 in Camrose, Alberta. He was the second oldest son of Oliver Thurston Grue (1915-1992) and Mary Elizabeth Grue, nee Lofgren (1915-2001).

Mark was raised on the family farm in Armena, Alberta. He was active in sports and in 4-H as young boy, and of course, farm work. As a boy, he attended Scandia Lutheran Church and was confirmed there. He attended Armena School for grades 1-10, grades 11 and 12 at Camrose Lutheran College. After high school graduation, Mark attended the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton, AB, graduating from the 2 year Civil Engineering Program in 1965, part of the first graduating class at NAIT. Mark worked with various Enginneering firms in AB and BC and a number of years with the Enivronment Department, Government of Alberta (Calgary office). After this period, he worked with the Engineering department at the City of Calgary. After moving to Cobble Hill near Duncan on Vancouver Island, Mark worked for a number of Engineering contractors through BC. He last worked for the Engineering Dept at the City of Surrey in BC. But with ailing health he had to stop work and the last few years he has had to manage various medical conditions and complications.*

Mark was married in 1980 to Anne Patterson at Calgary. In 1982 their daughter Amy Marie was born. In addition to his daughter, Mark was active with the life's of Anne's boys from a previous relationship (Donald, Ronald, and Todd Russel).

He is survived by his friend, partner, and wife Anne (Patterson) of Duncan, BC; his daughter Amy Grue of Nanaimo, BC; and Don and Ron Russel of the Lower Mainland, and Todd Russel in Mexico; his grandsons, Isaac and Andrew Reid of Nanaimo. Mark is also survived by his brother Glen of Leduc, AB, David of Camrose, AB, and Rueben of Kelowna, BC; and many nieces and nephews.

Mark requested that no church or memorial service be held. He requested cremation, and that his ashes be laid to rest next to the graves of his parents at the Wilhemina Church Cemetery in rural Hay Lakes, AB and in the Cowichan Bay near Duncan BC.

-------------------
* according to an article in the Camrose Canadian regarding my (Rueben's) confirmation on 9 May 1965, those who were guests at the Oliver Grue's were ".... Mark Grue of Edmonton who is attending Institute of Technology in that city."

2. Around 2012 (fall) or spring of 2013 Mark moved to Duncan, to Ts'i'ts'uwatul' Lelum Assisted Living; Pronounced (Ts-ee-tsu-wa-tul Lay-lum)Hul'qumi'num ( http://www.makola.bc.ca/Makola_Group/Makola_ILBC.html )
- 5755 Allenby Rd, Duncan BC V9L 0E6; 250-597-225.

I think he wanted to be closer to Amy; but also he couldn't continue to manage the 2 story townhouse (with the bedroom/bathroom upstairs). Anne has said that Mark was finding the townhouse too difficult to manage - up and down the stairs, with the dialysis supplies in the garage.

After Mark died, the Assisted Living home had posted a note of his passing. Anne sent me a copy of the note (see scanned copy in the folder). This is a transcription:

Mark Grue, September 11, 1944 - November 16, 2014

"Mark was the quiet gentle man that enjoyed a good laugh. Always very courteous and respectful of others. He was a great addition to Ts'i'ts'uwatul' Lelum Assisted Living. Mark will by missed by staff and residents."
