Mikkel John Bakken

  Research Notes:

Note: Mikkel Bakken (1879-1972) is my 6th cousin 2 times removed.

Mikkel Bakken's mother was Ingeborg Sophie Johnsdatter Moen (b 1847) and her parents were John Johnsen Moen (1822-1912 - he died at Westerose, AB) and Sara Torgersdatter Movold (1817-1876; died in Norway). Sara Torgersdatter Movold was a sister to Tobias Torgersen Movold (1823-1907)but not a family relationship Sara Torgersdatter. Tobias was married to Marit Olsdatter Røstbakken (1820-1904). Marit was a sister to my 2nd great-grandmother, Olava Olsdatter Røstbakken (1823-1919) who was married to Simen Thoresen Grue (1823-1903).

I also have a double relationship with Mikkel Bakken, b 1879. Mikkel's father was John M Bakken, born 1844, and John M's father was Mikkel Johnson Bakken, b 1804. My relationship to Mikkel [and his sister, Sofia b 1873] is quite distant, but the family relationship is through the ancestors of my second great-grandmother, Berit Sophie Mikkelsdatter Midtdal, 1832-1899, who was married to Lars Mikkelson, 1830- 1922.

Mikkel Bakken came to the Hay Lakes, AB area in 1906. Mikkel was the same generation as my grandfather, Lars Thoresen Grue (1887-1958). Mikkel Bakken had 8 children. Mikkel Bakken homesteaded on the NE¼ of Sec 26, Twp 49, Range 21.

Mikkel Bakken's sister was Sofia Mikkelsdatter Bakken (1873-1955) who was married Ole Feragen. The Bakken and Feragen families travelled together from Olso, Norway to Hays Lakes, but note that Mikkel and Olava did not have children when they left Norway - Lillian was born in Nov of 1906, after they had arrived in the summer of 1906.

- filed homestead on NE Sec 26, Twp 49, Range 21, W 4th ... see below
- first families (along with Ole Feragen) on the North side (and west) of Miquelon Lake) .. this would be along the road that as a kid, we traveled to Hastings Lake
- along with Ole Feragen, he bought a quarter on the south end of the Lake - Sec 23, Twp 49, Range 21
- in 1915 bought the north half of Sec 18, Twp 49, Range 21 - built a new house and this is the quarter that John Bakken lives on
... on the County of Camrose maps, 1955, this Sec 18 is about 3 kms west of Grandpa Jonas [Twp Rd 492] to the junction with Range Road 220 and the about 1 km north of the Rge Rd.
