5. findagrave, id 123307297;
Per Jansson Modig/Moody, b Sept 1825 died 12 Mar 1905, Stockholm Wright Co
- posted "biographical sketch" and photo of family, along with links to his children
and notes about some of his siblings
Findagrave id, 123307297; posted biography [the poster of the bio is not certain; original entry was "Joanne" in 2014; the later managed by KayMBN - this is likely. 'Kay Breding Netz' ]
[the following is information that I didn't have]
- Otto had received his name since he was child number 8 [?]
- family first came to Quebec and then to St Paul.
- then to Carver Co, MN by mule team; a year later, started homestead in Stockholm Twp [sec 14]
- "the land was covered with woods ... no roads ... bought a pair of steers to help break the land ... paid $20
- Per owned 240 acres
- was a charter member of the Swedish Lutheran Church [Stockholm Lutheran ?]
- Otto and Rev James Moody are the only offspring to have descendants [but see Kjerstin notes]
- In Sweden, the name was spelled Modig - meaning "brave." It sounded like Moody so that spelling was used in America. Since their father's name was Johan, sometimes they were called by patronymnic form of last names - Johanson, Jansson, or Johnson.
BUT: the home farm in Sweden was known as Moditorp under Fäbacken - the first use of this name in the
Lekvattnet parish was in household record volume for the years 1856-1860 [vol AI:2]
Another possible explanation for the surname was that it may someone adopted the home farm name, and with
spelling "Modi" and in the US [English] the spelling becaming "Moody". I don't know the orginal of us of
"Modig" unless it had become a Americanized spelling or someone had misspelled it, with some descendants using
"Modig" as the surname

- the above findagrave posts also lists the names of Per's siblings and links to their findagrave posts.

* re; "story" posted on findagrave id 189733974, re; Olaf J Modig and Mary ....
BUT on page viewer 562 of this resource: [somewhat different]

"The first winter was an especially hard one. One night when he [Peter Moody] and his brother Ole [Olof] had driven to Watertown and were on their return, the cold was so intense that Ole was frozen to death. Before the house was reached a heavy snow began to fall, and the people in the cabin were soon snowbound with the dead body.
A rude coffin was made, and it was several days before the burial could take place."
