bullet  Research Notes:

Summary:

Karin Olofsdotter was born in 1833 in Östmark parish in Värmland, Sweden. Her parents were Olof Jönsson b 16 Dec 1800 and Marit Jönsdotter, b 1799. I have not found a direct family relationship to her parents. For an unknown reason, Karin is not recorded in the Östmark parish birth/baptism records. However, her birth is noted in the Östmark parishHousehold Records at the farm Sorktjärn [Mellmark]. Her parents had moved twice during the time frame between 1830-1835 - first at the farm Runsjönviken in 1830, and then S Metbacken in 1831 and then they moved again in 1831 to Sorktjärn.The family likely stayed there until at least 1835. Karen is only recorded at Sorktjärn and so, it is most likely she was born at Sorktjärn.

In late Dec 1858, Karin married my 3rd cousin, Anders Jonsson, 1827-1875. They lived at the farm/village of Ulfsjön/Fäbacken. Anders' ancestors go back to the beginning of the farm Fäbacken [Finnish Family Name, Porkka]. See summary notes under her husband. As indicated Anders Jonsson and Karin had 2 boys. Anders died in 1875. Karin Olofsdotter remarried to Halsten Hallstensson (b 1843), and he then became the stepfather of Anders Jonsson's 2 boys, Jons Mons (b 1865) and Johan Aron (b 1872). Karin's 2 boys left for North America in 1892-93 and traveled to Sheyenne, Eddy Co, ND.

Halsten Halstensson and Karin emigrated to North America in 1900 and went to Sheyenne ND. They may have lived with Karin's boys, but I am not sure of that. Halsten and Karin did have a farm, likely in Benson Co, only a short distance north of Sheyenne.

Karin Olofsdotter died in 1917 and is buried at the Riverside Cemetery in Eddy Co. Halsten returned to Sweden shortly after Karin died - he died sometime after 1920 in Sweden.

NOTE: there is a major mistake in the findagrave record [id 135009779]. The person who entered this record, mistakenly recorded the person as Karin Halsten and her spouse as Pere Halstensson Hanson [b 1823]. This is NOT correct. Unfortunately many of the Family trees on Ancestry repeated this mistake. I had contacted the 'manager' for this findagrave post in Oct 2021 - she indicated she will make the necessary changes, but as of 26 Jul 2023, the error is still evident and no changes have been made. Unfortunately, this error created a lot of confusion. But this mistake shows again how important it is to review all available information, and never assume a statement is true until it can be further verified.

NOTE: There are 2 sources that I have consulted that records this correctly. First, the local history book for Sheyenne, Eddy Co, ND [Our Heritage, 1883-1980, Sheyenne Area] notes that she died in 1917 [image 225/page 222 - this is included in the submission for her son Johan Aron Anderson], and records the death of Karin in 1917. Secondly, the booklet "North Dakota, U.S., Cemetery Records, 1877-1999" [image 517, 2nd col, 10th line, Ancestry.com collection]. This transcription of the records for Riverside Cemetery in Eddy Co, ND was completed through the Red River Genealogy Society. The records are available through Ancestry.com and are searchable by name [North Dakota, U. S., Cemetery Records, 1877-1999] - unfortunately, Ancestry does not differentiate the various volumes from the Red River Genealogy Society. Familysearch.org has scanned the microfilm copies and divided them in the various volumes to browse. Each volume is scanned indiviually, but there isn't an easy was to find one specific volume - it seems that you have to open each volume to obtain an idea of the area that volume covers.

Image 219: Halsten Halstenson b 1 Feb 1843, Östmark and his wife, Karin Olsdotter b 4 Jul 1833 at Lekvattnet; received 1904; came to this area 1900;
- but Karin Olofsdotter death/burial is NOT recorded image 347 [1917]

they are also recorded in 1915 ND State Census, Eddy Co (image 18; he is age 72, she is age 82)

See, "Our Heritage, 1883-1980, Sheyenne Area"; Sheyenne Historical Society, 1980 (North Dakota)

- this records that she died in 1917 and then her husband Hallsten Halstensson b 1843 had returned to Sweden.
- Hallsten had homesteaded in Benson Co

Findagrave, id 135009779; Riverside Cemetery, Sheyenne Eddy Co, ND BUT this is the WRONG id for Karin Olofsdotter
but this is NOT Correct, since her and her husband was Hallsten Hallsten
b 1843 emigrated in 1881
[ Riverside Cemetery: near the corner of 29 St NE and 70 Ave NE, east of the town of Sheyenne; further, Eddy Co, ND plat, 1910, image 25, records a Cemetery on the far north part of NE sec 10 ]

and a link to Per Halstensson's wife, Karin with a date of death in 1917, with the notation: "She was married to Pere Halstensson/Hanson on 9 Dec 1860 in Sweden [wrong !!!!!! ]. She gave birth to her first child, Nels Uranus Hanson on board ship crossing to America. Her husband died in January 1905 and is buried in Riverside Cemetery."
the findagrave source/contributor is Jonelle Hvinden, and information added 28 Aug 2014
AND, this post also links to a "baby girl Halstensson" born 4 Nov 1871 and died 8 Nov 1871 and buried at Stockholm Lutheran Church cemetry, Stockholm Twp, Wright Co, MN [see image 1088, 3rd from top, in the Stockholm Lutheran Church funeral/death records: "Barn till Carin Halstensdotter", age 4 days" ;, but no other identifing information on Carin Halstensdotter. BUT with the patronmyic "Halstensdotter", this must be the daughter of Halsten but what is his patronymic???
- this cannot be Karin Olofsdotter since she did not come to the US until 1900. I do not have a person named Carin/Karin Halstensdotter on my Legacy database within this time period. BUT not there are other people named Halsten (thus Halstendotter) in the Stockholm Twp area in MN, and other people with the name Halstensson.
It is possible this burial record referrs to a daughter of Per Halstensson and Karin Nilsdotter, but there is no evidence that they had a daughter b in 1871 and died 1871.
It is likely that the only way to prove this would be to review the original cemetery records from the Stockholm Cemetery, if they even exist - but there might be a transcription ????
