Mats Larsson Porkka
- Born: Abt 1632, Fryksände, Värmland län, Sweden
- Marriage (1): [—?—]
Research Notes:
Summary: Matts Larsson Porkka
There is a fair amount of agreement amongst family researchers that Mats Larsson Porkka was born about 1632, with most agreeing that he was born at Runnsjön which at that time was within the boundaries of Fryksände parish in Värmland. There is also agreement that Mats Larsson Porkka's (b 1632) father was Lars Klemetsson Porkka, but not a lot of agreement on Lars' date of birth. I have recorded his birth between 1595 and 1600 in Finland [see his page for research notes].
There is NO agreement on the death or location of Mats [Matts/Mattes] Larsson Porkka, but he likely died around 1690 at Runnsjön. There is some agreement that he was married to Karin Eriksdotter [Luikoinen] b abt 1632, with agreement on her birth location Some family reseachers record her Finnish Family Name as Luikoinen. If this is the case, then it is likely she was born at Lekvattnet. However, this may OR may not be correct - that is, her name, birth or birth location [see: Lennart Eriksson FT records this name as do some other FTs] but there is no evidence presented for the name of his wife.
Jarl Ericson [see point 6] notes that Mats Larsson Porkka's wife was unknown and that he had at least 4 sons. And as Jarl Ericson notes, one of the sons was named Erik Mattsson, but his birth is not known. He was likely born around 1675 at Runnsjön.
Fryksände or Östmark parishes, as I have indicated previously, have very limited research records prior to the early 1700's since the those records have not survived.
Since the most of given names and patronymic names are very common, it is very hard to distinguish family members in the early Household Records in Fryksände [it wasn't until 1750, that a birth record was first recorded]. The Household records with the birth years is more helpful in developing a family outline. But one aspect that I have found researching in the Fryksände household records is that the birth year does not always correspond with the birth/baptism record, and in the household records the birth year is often 1-2 years younger than what the birth/baptism record records. Birth, marriage and death records for Fryksände start around 1707. There are some early court records, and many family researchers have posted some court records. Usually these do not provide much information on family relationships. The are sometimes helpful establishing a person and farm/village they were a resident of. I have not reviewed many original court records, since it is almost impossible to make out the handwriting. There is a summary of some court records [from Gunnar Almqvist's summary] that many researchers post - my experience is that 'google translate' often misses the older usage of words. The taxation records for Fryksände parish do not show family relationships.
There are some "facts" that we can be certain of:
1) Lars Klemetsson Porkka (b bet 1595 and 1600 in Finland) was the father of a son named Matts Larsson Porkka. 2) Matts Larsson Porkka was born around 1632 at Runnsjön, Fryksände parish in Värmland and he likely died about 1690 3) Matts Larsson Porkka's (b abt 1632) wife is NOT known or at least who she was is NOT proven. 4) Matts Larsson Porkka (b abt 1632) had at least 5 children [see point 6 below] 5) One son of Matts Larsson Porkka (b abt 1632) was Erik Mattsson Porkka 6) Erik Mattsson Porkka was likely born around 1675 at Runnsjön. [His death and death location is often recorded as 1744 at Åskagsberget in Fryksände parish, but this is NOT Proven]. 7) Erik Mattsson Porkka (b abt 1675) was likely married to Annika Johansdotter [b abt 1680]. They had at least one daughter, Annika Eriksdotter Porkka [b 1708]. They likely had other children, born before 1707-08, but no Family Trees record other children. 8) Annika Eriksdotter Porkka [b 1708] was likely married but there is no marriage record in the Fryksände parish records [or other surrounding parish records - Gräsmark, Lysvik, Sunne]
As indicated there are a number of Family Trees (FTs) and family researchers for Mats Larsson Porkka (b abt 1632) and his son Erik Mattsson Porkka (b abt 1675) and that Erik had a daughter named Annika Eriksdotter. BUT there is no direct evidence of the accuracy of these FTs
There are 2 FTs in relation of Annika Eriksdotter Porkka (b 1708) and her ancestors that are may be relevant to 'our' family ancestors. Lennart Eriksson FT on Ancestry [see end of point 2] and a FT on Disbyt by Lennart Thegel [see point 3]. These 2 FTs note that:
Annika Eriksdotter Porkka [b 1708] was married to Nils Jönsson Karttuinen [b 1709] and then Lennart Eriksson FT records that a great great grandson of Annika Eriksdotter Porkka and Nils Jönsson Karttiuinen was: Bengt Nilsson Backstrom, 1830-1920, and Bengt was the grandfather of Anna Marie Shinnes married to my 2nd cousin twice removed, Nels Martin Olson (b 1886 in MN and in 1941 at Stettler, AB)
HOWEVER, There is no marriage record for Annika Eriksdotter Porkka and Nils Jönsson in the Fryksände parish records. I do not know why this is the case. The only records that exist are the Household records in Fryksände starting in 1741 [vol AI:4] and this volume records a person named Nils Jönsson and his wife Annika [without a patronymic name] and daughter Kerstin living at South Lekvattenat. By following this family, we are able to eventually go to a person named Bengt Nilsson (b 1830) [Backstrom in the US and Canada].
SO, we can follow the ancestors of Bengt Nilsson (Backstrom) b 1830 through the Household records to the "first" ancestors, Nils Jönsson and wife Annika in 1741 at south Lekvattnet.
BUT THERE IS A MAJOR PROBLEM: I cannot reasonably conclude from my research that the person named Annika in the 1741 household record and married to a person named Nils Jönsson, is in fact my ancestor, Annika Eriksdotter Porkka b 1708 and then her ancestors going back to my "9th great grandfather", Lars Klemetsson Porkka, b bet 1595 and 1600 in Finland.
There is no evidence who the person name Annika in the above record actually was. In subsequent volumes, her birth is recorded as 1713 - this is a 5 year gap from her birth record of 1708, and gap is unusual. And often Nils Jönsson's wife is recorded as Anna Eriksdotter. Anna or Annika are likely interchangeable names. And later in the household records, a patronymic name "Eriksdotter" is added. However, this does not prove that she was Annika Eriksdotter Porkka b 1708.
Annika Erikdotter b 1708 and Annika Eriksdotter b 1713, may or may not be the same person. More research will be needed

1. - See my document, "Porkka - Bork/Bürk surname posts ......." [in z-folder] and page 7 and post by Lise Stensby, 17 Apr 2000 - He was of Finnish genus Porkinen? or Suhoinen? - further descendants, etc: son Erik Matsson b abt 1651 at Ulfjsön Fryksände (Lekvattnet). Gift med Annika Samuelsdotter, f. 1665 Långenäs Grâsmark i Värmland av slekten Suurinen BUT there is no source material and reviewing the above document of mine [29 Jun 2021] it is almost impossible to develop a genealogy some of that information
2. geni.com [1] https://www.geni.com/people/Mattes-Mats-Larsson-Porkka/6000000021095607095 AND [2] https://www.geni.com/people/Lars-Klemetsson-Porkka/6000000021095518033 - but this link, records Mattes Larsson Porkka [abt 1632-1690] and Karin Eriksdotter Linkoinen [b abt 1632] with son Erik Mattesson Porkka but born in 1651 at Ulfsjön [currently a part of Lekvattnet pairsh] and then married to Annika Samuelsdotter Sunnroinen, but likey Suunroinen -- the other possibility is Suhoinen [more common and on Norwegian FFN] and they have a son, Samuel Eriksson, b 1701 from Stensgårdskogen - Samuel is recorded in the Household records at Stensgårdskogen (and family) [his birth is recorded as 1704???] from 1730-1757, but there is no indication of his parents. Some children with the FFN Suunroinen - Samuel Eriksson is noted in the mantal books (taxation) with the earliest 1731 and up 1750, the latest volume transcribed But again, you cannot determine who his father his.
NOTE: Finnish Family Names: Gabriel Bladh, Jan Myhrvold and Niclas Persson; Skogsfinska släktnamn.... DOES NOT record the above FFN, either spelling??? - Sunnroinen or Suunroinen. However, Slektsnavndatabasen, does record this FFN along with an alternate name of Suran/Soran - note that the geni.com FT [2] and clicking for Samuel Eriksson, references the Slektsnavndatabasen [page 133] and records that Samuel Eriksson was at Långtjärn in Gräsmark parish in 1664 mantal ??? BUT of course, this does not prove his genealogy only the name
AND the above geni.com [2] recors that Samuel Suran/Soran was born about 1645 at Soranstorp in Låntjärn and that he was the father of the Annika Samuelsdotter Suurroinen born about 1665 at Långenäs, Gräsmark and married to Erik Mattsson Porkka, b 1651 at Ulfsjön. Their son, Samuel Eriksson Porkka b abt 1701 and died 1 Jun 1758 at Stensgårdskogen [Fryksände (S) FI:1 (1749-1807) Page 27, no 38; died at age 57, thus birth abt 1701]
There is one Disbyt FT [Lorraine Hladik, id 53059 ** last update 31 Dec 2019]. BUT this FT does not record Samuel's Eriksson's father
There are 5 of Family Trees on Ancestry - but none give his parents; 1-2 record Finnish Family Name [FFN] as Suunroinen; 1 FT records that his wife, Karin Persdotter, b 1710, was also known as Käck / Kähköinen, and her father as Per Mikelsson b 1686 at Fäbacken and 1744, likely at North Lekvattnet [from transcribed ...]
Ancestry FTs [Family Trees] andersson Släktträd [mattsoandersson]; accessed 28 Jun 2021 - not reviewed in detail, but NOT very useful https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/26331493/person/330145954236/facts - Mats Larsson born abt 1632 in Lysvik parish - BUT I doubt that this is accurate
search: Mats Larsson, b 1632 +-5yrs, Fryksände, Varmland - a number of hits and FTs - actually about 60 FTs that have this name; most unhelpful Problems: most say that he was born in Hedåsen Lysvik parish then a number have Klemet Pedersson Porkka b 1575 in Finland but with 2 marriages Helen Andersdotter Tarvanian (1580-1663) and then other marriage Karin Örjansdotter (1590-1663] but it seems the children are the same - AND this is similiar to the problems I noted previously -- see research notes under Peder Pedersson Porkka b abt 1535 in Finland, point 7
Problem: the given name and efternamns are very common and so it is very easy to record the wrong person

3. Maybe ???? DISBYT (old version: https://disbyt-classic.dis.se/searchindex.php)
Lennart Gustavsson, id 36681, date 2 Mar 2014 [last access, 9 Jul 2021] Lars Klemetsson Porkka b abt 1605 died abt 1665 and connects some of the ancestors Mats Larsson b abt 1632, married abt 1665 to unknown and then sons, Anders, Erik, Mats, Olof, and Lars Matsson Porkka - unfortunately, this FT DOES NOT record any specific birth dates or more information on any of the children: - for son Erik - born about 1671 - but gives no further information
Another DISBYT; accessed 9 Jul 2021; Lennart Thegel, id 58715 with an update on 30 Apr 2021 re: Mats Larsson Porkka, b ?, died abt 1690; m. unknown ; child: Erik Mattsson, b abt 1675; died 1744; married to Annika Johansdotter, b abt 1680, daughter: Annika Eriksdotter Porkka, b 1708 died 1788 married to Nils Jönsson b [2 Aug 1709] d 1774 [his parents, Jöns Jakobsson and Kerstin Jonsdotter, Lekvattnet] daughter: Kerstin Nilsdotter, b 1734, died 1813; m. 1761 to Hallsten Hallstensson, b 1735, d 1821 [ last searched, Kerstin Nilsdotter, Fryksände; 3 or 4 pages in ]
--- this is similiar to Lennart eriksson FT on Ancestry
4. From: Runnsjön as it was by Roland Kihlstadius, http://start.varmlandsrotter.se/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/va2011_2.pdf [a basic translation - currently in z-folder, 28 Jun 2021] - on page 2 there are a couple of references 1) - in 1674, Mattes Larsson, married and a young man and is living with or near by with his father, Lars Klemetsson 2) - in 1688 - Mattes Larsson is recorded in the mantal (tax book) in 1674; and in 1688 he as a grown son, Lars Mattsson - there is no further mention of Mattes or his son Erik Mattsson
5. Richard Broberg, "Svenska Landsmål ....." [28 Jun 2021, path: genealogy - general resources - Forest Finns .....] - this is a bit confusing for me, But: it seems that Mats Larsson Porkka [son of Lars Klemetsson] had been the first to settle Ulvsjön around 1653, but he had left with and his location then became unknown. He may have been in 1663 at Stengards (mantal) as Matthis Burke and then the next year, 1664 at Norra Lekvattnet ... old Matz Burke - ? this may be unlikely, since Mattes Larsson Porkka would have been about 30 yrs old in 1664. Broberg mentions he may have gone to Runnsjön - but this is likely likely referring to old Matz Burke .... [note that this is likely referring Matts Klemetsson Porkka, b abt 1610 and a brother to 'our' Lars Klemetsson Porkka born abt 1595 in Finland].
6. Finnar i Östmark, Vitsand, Nyskoga, Södra och Norra Finnskoga" by Jarl Ericson. 1996, Arvika, Sweden ; link, https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSVL-VGZ?i=1347&cat=773942 image: 1357
Mats Larsson Porkka b abt 1632. i ntl 1669-1671; hans hustru okänd till namnet. Enl domboken hade Matts Larsson en kvintett söner; dessa uppräknas härnedan, om i rätt ordning dock tvivelaktigt! his wife unknown to the name. According to the court book, Matts Larsson had a quintet of sons; these are enumerated below, if in the right order, however, doubtful!
all born abt or between 1665 to 1675 Lars Mattsson Porkka [old Disbyt, deceased member; married unknown; 3 sons, Lars b 1695, Olof b 1697, Johan b 1700 ] Olof Mattsson Porkka Mats Mattsson Porkka Erik Mattsson Porkka Anders Mattsson Porkka
Av dessa fem har inte mycket framkommit ur arkivalierna. Dock omtalar tre domboksprotokoll att Lars Mattsson Porkka hade tre söner Of these five, not much has emerged from the archives. However, three court recordings mention that Lars Mattsson Porkka had three sons
Lars Larsson Porkka, b about 1695 Omnämnd som omyndig i F 03h11 [mentioned as a minor in court record of...] Olof Larsson Porkka, b abt 1697 Johan Larsson Porkka, b 1700
Unfortunately, Jarl Ericson's book does not record anything further of Erik Mattson Porkka
a. The Above says that Mats Larsson Porkka [b abt 1632] was married but his wife was not known. BUT: Lennart eriksson FT on Ancestry and the geni.com FTs record that his wife was "Karin Eriksdotter Linkoinen", b abt 1632 but death unknown and another ancestry FT suggests marriage about 1665 with no source information [Ahonen Vittone Clans, 2017 FT - Nora Ahonen] AND son Erik Mattsson Porkka was born in 1651 at Ulfsjön - this birth is much earlier than the above information from Jarl Ericson. Jarl Ericson's work is likely a bit better researched
b. the Finnish Family Name of Linkoinen, that is Karin Eriksdotter Linkoinen [b abt 1632] and married to Mattes Larsson Porkka.
- On the Finnish Family Names .... document: by Jan Myhrvold and Niclas Persson http://kau.diva-portal.org/smash/get/diva2:278627/FULLTEXT01 THERE IS NO record of the "Linkoinen" FFN - since the above work is likely to be well researched the use of this FNN is unlikely to be correct. However, the above document does record some possibilities [page 114 of the PDF] with the spelling "Liukkoinen" with many at N.Lekvattnet, in particular, there is a person name Erik in 1669 tax records. [referring to source : SRA:LR:Fryksände - Riksarkivet Stockholm county accounts; as well as mantle 1669]. This is likely the person noted in point 6.e.
- this spelling is recorded a number of times [spelling, Liukoinen] in the Fryksände parish household records volume AI:15 (1820-1824), starting with page 381 to 390 [... 3 more mentions of the FFN of Liukoinen in the next household record volume - but not very helpful. At the time of Gottlund's travels and research throughout the area, he and written the Finnish Family Name that could be traced to individuals in Fryksände and Östmark parish books, along with others parishes [ http://www.nordvarmland.com/istid/page.php?id=2522 ]
- the handrwriting of the letter 'u' and the letter 'n' in some of the records is hard to determine and can easily look like either letter. Thus, it is likely that the most accurate spelling is "Liukkoinen" and either over time the spelling changed or some family researchers misspell the FFN.
c. The Norwegian based, Slektsnavndatabasen, records a number of people with the FFN, Liukkoinen, starting on page 72. Most are all named as being from North Lekvattnet in Fryksände parish. On page 72 there is one person named, Erik Liukkoinen [page 72 no 2867], variant of Lukan from North Lekvattnet - mantal 1669
d. C C Gottlund travels ... 8 Sep - 29 Octr 1821 [there are 5 hits, but it is hard to make out everything since google translate isn't exact] ... Finn Erik Jansson Liukoinen from N. Lekvattnet ... 1769 [maybe born in 1737 at N Lekvattnet ... see point 6.e. but this is likely a different person in the point 6.e The first, who came to Norra Lekvattnet, was a Liukoinen, which is why the village was then also called Liukola. He has lived there, where Jan Jansson Kössinen now lives, although a little further north.
e. then, 2 FTs but it is impossible to connect the three, other that the use of the name Erik Jansson Luikoinen mentioned in Gottlunds's work.
