Samuel Harvey Svensen was the first of his family to be born in Canada. On 27 May 1918, when he was just two months shy of his 19th birthday, Sam volunteered to fight in World War I. His enlistment form says he was 5' 7", with blue eyes and brown hair, and a "fresh" complexion. He was working as a chauffeur at the time, and listed his father Gilbert as his next of kin. On 11 July 1924, he served as best man to Walter Greiner, who was marrying Sam's youngest sister, Agnes. Sam himself married Rose Dorothy Tooke some years later, having and raising their children in the area. 6204
