  Research Notes:

Summary

Ingrid Olsdatter was my 1st cousin 5 times removed. Her direct ancestors go back to one of the earliest settlements in Tolga parish at the farm Søndmør. Her father was Ole Evensen [1782-1872], also known as Ole Evensen the younger. Ole Evensen was a brother to my 4th great-grandfather, Niels Evensen Søndmør, 1768-1819. Their father was Even Bersvendsen Søndmør [1734-1795].

Ingrid Olsdatter was most likely born at the farm Heggkåsa Vestre in Tolga parish in 1808. In 1833 she was married to Lars Estensen from the farm Hodal Vestre, also known as Utistu or Utistuen. It is most likely that all of their children were born at Hodal Vestre. Lars Estensen and Ingrid Olsdtr Kåsen had 5 children: Esten born 11 Mar 1936; Marit born 1 Mar 1839; Ole born 8 Feb 1842; Kersten born 3 Feb 1845; and, Sigrud b 21 Jan 1847. Lars and Ingrid did have another daughter, a twin to Kersten named Sirgud but had she died on 15 Jul 1846.

Ingrid Olsdtr and Lars Estensen left Tolga parish on 9 Mar 1852 to emigrate to North America.

In addition to Ancestry Family Trees, in particular West Plus 2023 FT [see below for link to this FT], there are 3 other narratives that record some information on Ingrid and Lars Estensen's travels [see below for links to John Mason's book, Bersvend Blikstad's manuscript, and "Faded Footprints". "Faded Footprints" seems to be based on Bersvend Bilkstad's book, and both are concentrated on the family of Ingrid's daughter, Marit Larson who was married Tollef Nelson. But both these narratives has some information that conflicts with other information that I have researched. The major conflict is that these 2 last narratives record that Lars Estensen was married to Marit Olsdatter Hægkaasen, but the information from the Bygebok for Tolga by Eystein Eggen, clearly records that Lars Estensen was married to Ingrid Olsdatter Kåsen [or Kaasen and sometimes referred to as Hægkaasen] in 1833 - this is confirmed by the marriage recorded in the Norway Parish Records for Tolga parish.

I have no explanation for the discrepancy regarding the Marit Olsdatter Hægkaasen and Ingrid Olsdatter. My only explanation is that either Bilkstad made a mistake or had received some misinformation from some relative and this misinformation carried forward to the narrative in "Faded Footprints" and to many Family Trees. Although not always the case, sometimes family members and family 'traditions' are sometimes loose with facts or verifiable evidence. But to be fair, it is likely that Bilkstad did not have access to the Norway Parish records. It is possible that the misinformation arises from a confusion with Lars Estensen's mother who was known Marit Olsdatter [Eide].

John Mason's book records Lars Estensen and Ingrid as "E. and Inger (Olson) Larson". It appears that John Mason received his information from Ingrid and Lars' son, Ole Larson. Again, the name "E. Larson" is not accurate, since the parents of Ole Larson were Lars Estensen and Ingrid Olsdatter, and "E. Larson" should be Lars Estensen. It is not clear why there was this discrepancy, other than John Mason, an independent author, would have gathered a large amount of biographical information from a large number of people and sources. Part of the name issue in John Mason's book is due to the "analyzation" in the US.

Regardless of the discrepancies, the three narratives have some commonalities with regards to Ingrid and Lars Estensen's early travels in North America. They arrived at the port of Quebec and from there they made their was to Racince County, Wisconsin [likely at a community known as Yorkville Prairie]. From there they moved to Spring Grove, Houston Co, MN around 1856-57. After about 6 months the family then moved a bit further east to Fillmore Co, MN, and farmed likely in Rushford Twp. Lars Estensen and Ingrid moved to Jackson Co, MN around 1861, but because of the Dakota Sioux uprising, they only stayed in Jackson Co for about a year. Around 1861-62, Ingrid and Lars returned to Fillmore Co. Around 1869 they left Fillmore Co for Otter Tail Co and farmed at Dane Prairie township. Of course both Ingrid and Lars were in the 60's when they arrived at Otter Tail Co. Their sons Esten and Ole, both took out homesteads in Otter Tail Co - Esten at Tumili Twp and Ole at Dane Twp. It is likely that both Lars and Ingrid lived with or near their son Ole.

Although the evidence is somewhat unknown, it appears that Lars Estensen died in 1877 and Ingrid Olsdatter died in 1885. Apparently both are buried at Sarpsborg Cemetery in Tumili Twp - this is based on a comment made on the findagrave id 62057942 for their son Ole Larson.

In conclusion, I am not sure what further evidence or sources I will be able to find. I have researched some information for Ingrid and Lars' childrenn - see their research page.

- also has additional information on Esten's children, but not others; limited information on Ingrid and Lars Estensen
- note ... names Maria Larson as a daughter of Lars, but also says she was born in 1859 in Norway - Lars Estensen left Norway in 1852, so this can't be the right person ... this FT has Maria Larson married to Knut Brandvold in Tumuli and the 1900 US Census records her birth year as 1859

NOTE: some FTs on Ancestry record the birth of a person named Lars Larson b 1830 [a couple FTs recrd his birth record 1 Jan 1830] and record this Lars Larson as a son of Ingrid Olsdtr and Lars Estensen. There some census records for Tumuli Twp that also record this family. However, I don't believe that this Lars Larson b 1830 was their son. I reviewed on 9 Apr 2024 the Tolga Parish birth records for 1828-1832 and there is no person born named Lars with a patronmyic of Larsen. Thus, these FTs are NOT Correct, and it is most likely that this Lars Larson, b 1830, was born in some other place in Norway.

- then moved to Jackson Co, MN and entered a homestead for 160 acres but left the following year [1862] "..driven away by the Indians [Dakota Sioux uprising of 1862]
- returned to Fillmore Co, until until moving to Otter Tail Co [with son Ole Larson]
- E and Inger were the parents of Esten, Maret, Ole, Chesten [likely Christine or Kersitn] and Segri.
