1. Birth and location of birth: Conflicting Evidence [ 27 Jul 2017 ]

I have looked at a number of sources for Paul Henry Norby's birth, but there is little consistency in both the date and the location of his birth. These are the sources and the information they record

a. California death index: birth as 1 Jul 1904
b. US SSDI index: birth as 1 Jul 1902
c. Newspaper Article: age at death, 66 - thus birth 1904 (no location); see point 6, death 6 Dec 1970
d. Arizona marriage license: age as of 26 Dec 1936, age 32 - thus birth in 1904
e. 1910 US Census (15 Apr 1910): age at last birthdate - age 7 - thus birth in 1903
f. 1920 US Census (1 Jan 1920): age at last birthdate - age 17 - thus birth 1903
g. 1940 US Census (1 Apr 1940): age at last birthdate - age 35 - thus birth 1904
h. WW 1 US Draft Reg (12 Sep 1918): 1 Jul 1900, age 18

Based on the family history written by Allen Dale Anderson (Ancestors and Descendants of Pernille and Halvor Norby, Mar 1979, Seattle), Paul Henry Norby's father was Paul Halvorsen Norby born in 1872 in Norway. Paul Halvorsen came with his family (Pernille, nee Skaret, and Halvor Norby) from Norway in 1866 and settled on a farm at Hoodsport, Mason Co, Washington. Paul Halvorsen had lived with his parents (he, his wife, and his daughter Vesta are recorded with his parents in 1900 US Census at Hoodsport. The obituary (24 Apr 1905) for Paul Halvorsen records that he died at this parents home in Hoodsport, but this obituary also says that he leaves "... his wife and three children of Olney, Oregon..." Paul Halvorsen Norby was a miner and Allen Dale Anderson records very little information, other and he moved to southern OR as a miner [Olney OR is only about 10 kms south of Astoria, in the North West part of Oregon].

Paul Halvorsen Norby's parents both died in 1907 at Port Townsend, Jefferson. Thus they must have moved to Port Townsend between May 1905 and Mar of 1907 (death of Halvor; Pernille died in Nov 1907).

Depending on the date of Paul Henry's birth, it is likely that he was born at Hoodsport, Mason Co, WA, but there is no direct or orginal evidence of this. I have not found a birth for Paul Henry in Washington or Oregon State. I also have not found an obituary (this might record his birth location and date), and I had reviewed issues of the Los Angeles Times (Dec 6-11, 1970). It might be possible that the original death certificate records birth location and date of birth). I also have not found any further information on his wife Opal or his son Dallas, other than Dallas died in 1981 in Sacramento, CA.

Conclusions:

1. Paul Henry's birth date is likely 1 Jul
2. Year of birth is likely 1904
3. Location of birth is likely Hoodsport, Mason Co, WA

However, as indicated there is no direct evidence of the above conclusions. Therefore on my Legacy Database, I am recording is birth as Between 1 Jul 1902 and 1 Jul 1904 and that the location of birth is Washington, United States




2. US WWI draft Registration

3. 1920 US Census - Los Angeles

- family - Thomas S Burwell
- children are all listed with surname of Burwell; and relation to head of household is son
- Paul, age 17 <is listed as a clerk in a Bank; Vesta as a bookkeeper in an auto shop; Bernice ????
- also is listed as a son, Lawrence age 9

line 75 - Paul Norby, brother in law to head of household; age 35 born in WA; grade 8, worked 30 hrs the last wk of Mar, worked 22 weeks in 1939, earned $440; occupation is Actor in Radio; both Paul and Opal in Los Angeles in 1 Apr 1935
- wife, Opal G (sister to Dallas) age 29, born in NE, 4 yrs high school
- son, Dallas P (nephew to Dallas), age 1 born in CA



4. California Voter Registration, 1900-1968

- two listings for Paul Norby, 1940 and 1942, 5815 S Arlington Ave, Los Angeles Precinct
- he is listed as Actor - ?????; IMBd website - uncredited on the Gay Falcon, 1941; the Falcon takes Over, 1942; and a couple of episodes of a TV series, The Gang Busters, in 1951

- there are a number of short notices of his acting in various plays in 1931 1935, 1937

BUT in general search, it appears there are a few people named "Paul Norby" - one is actor, see above, the other a golf player, and then a police officer (Van Nuys; actually with middle name of 'Stoecker); and then the articles from the Chula Vista re; Mr and Mrs Paul Norby with son Mark, and daughter Barabara visiting with Mr and Mrs Roy Peters (point 6a below)

- Paul Norby, age 66 - so date of death would have been 6 Dec 1970; BUT his age at death was 68, not 66

Paul married Opal G Belville in Dec 1936 in Arizona, United States ^3625,3756.^,3757 (Opal G Belville was born about 1910 in Nebraska, United States.)

Arizona, County Marriage Records, 1865-1972 (Ancestry.com Collection, accessed 25 Jul 1927). Yuma Co, AZ issued a marriage license on 26 Dec 1936 to Paul Norby age 32 of Los Angeles, CA, native of Hoodsport, WA and Opal Belville age 26 of Los Angeles, native of Nebraska. Their address is likely, 1201 So. Cochran, Los Angeles.

Although this records does not record the actual date of marriage, it is likley their marriage took place on 26 Dec 1936 or a day or 2 later.
