Research Notes:
Summary:
Mikkel Nilsen was born on 13 Dec 1797, likely at the farm Bakken in Femundshytte in Røros parish. Røros Copperworks had built the Femunds Smelting House complex and with this, a small village developed. The Smelting hut complex was built in 1736. Mikkel would have grown up in the area of his father's house/cabin known as Bakken, and likely at young age, and his brothers would have worked taking care of the farm animals etc. I'm not certain if his father, Nils Mikkelsen, had worked at the actual smelting house, but he most likely worked at supplying the smetling house/hut with wood and timber and the making of charcoal. With this, it is likely that Mikkel Nilsen [and his brothers Erik, Lars and Simon] also had helped their father in the gathering wood and making of charcoal - this would have likely been at an early age, possibly even starting at age 10.
At any rate, we know that the smetling house complex at Femundshytte closed for the final time in 1821. Mikkel would have been about age 23 at that time. We also know that in 1827 he married Ingeborg Larsdatter who was born in 1798. And we also know that Mikkel had a relationship with at least 2 other women prior to his marriage with Ingeborg. Mikkel first was in a relationship with some one that is not known, but they had a son named Mikkel. This Mikkel was born in 1820 or 1821 - note that I have not found a birth/baptism record for a boy name Mikkel Mikkelsen [father, Mikkel Nilsen].
Mikkel Nilsen also had a daughter, Gjertrud Mikkelsdatter born in 1824 at Femundshytte. Gjertrud's mother was Ingeborg Olsdatter. She was likely born in 1798 with her parents Ole Olsen Femundsenden and Margrathe Olsdatter Kvilten [see Ingeborg Olsdatter page]. Also see Gjertrud's page for detail - Ingeborg Olsdatter had married in 1830 to Ramsus Amundsen, b 1782, from the farm Røsten in the Tufsingdalen area of Tolga parish. This is where Gjertrud grew up.
On 27 Feb 1827, Mikkel Nilsen married Ingeborg Larsdatter, b 1798 in the Røros parish. Ingeborg was the daughter of Lars Mikkelsen Hulbækal and Inger Olsdatter Dybdal.

Hans [Jensen] Syl and Ingeborg [Eriksdatter]. Hans Jensen Syl came from the Härjedalen, Sweden - this area borders the Norwegian border and is about 20 kms from the northern section so Lake Femund. Hans Jensen Syl was most likley the first settler at the farm Sylen at the northern shores of lake Grøvelsjøen in Norway [most of this lake is in Sweden]. It isn't clear if Hans Jensen had 'title' to the land. He had come to this area about 1766 and built his mountain home. It was also in 1766 that Hans was married to Ingeborg Eriksdatter from Langen nordre. The Bygebok doesn't clearly give much background for Hans Jensen Syl, but it reasonable to think that Hans had been in the eastern Røros and lake Femund area for sometime, likely working on providing timber and charcoal to the Femunds Hytte on the western shore of lake Femund. The Bygedbok for Engerdal on page 203 says "... Hans Jensen Syl has probably worked at Femund smelting house from the beginning [so since 1743]. Hans Jensen and Ingri Olsdatter had a son, Jens born was born about 1768 but he had died at age 27 in an avalanche in 1795. Hans Jensen Syl died in 1798. Ingeborg Eriksdatter is recorded in 1801 census at the farm/house Grúeldal or sometimes recorded as Grúldal - it is possible that Grúldal is located close to Sylen. She is living with her niece Ingri Olsdatter and her husband, Lars Mortensen Hulbækal [Holbekkmoen].
Hans [Jensen] Syl and Ingeborg [Eriksdatter] were in their "seventies" when they had taken in her niece Ingri Olsdatter, who was married in 1797 to Lars Mortensen Holbekkmoen from Tolga. Lars Mortensen and Ingri Olsdtr's daughter, Ingeborg Larsdatter, was married in 1826 to Mikkel Nilsen Femundhytte. He was a brother of Erik Nilsen who built vestre Bakken near Drevsjø. Mikkel Nilsen built both a sawmill and a wool homespun cloth mill** at Sylen. The latter was in use for a long time and took in wool the making of wool cloths that came from many places, including from Engerdal well after 1900.
Mikkel's son, Jens, fell into the sawmill pond and drowned in 1856, just 15 years old. This was the second tragic accident at Sylen. Mikkel became crippled with gout in his later years. During that time, he practiced writing. One can see his neat, beautiful handwriting in devotional books and other books that have been kept on the farm.
Their eldest son, Lars Mikkelsen became the tenant at Sylen for a time [Lars was born in 1830]. In 1856 [actual 12 Mar 1854], he married Berit Sofie Mikkelsdatter Midtdal from Tufsingdal, and she was born in 1830 [actually, 1832]. In 1865, they had many farm animals at Sylen, including 18 reindeer, and they were the only ones, apart from the Sami, in Engerdal known to have domesticated reindeer in their herd (excluding Pastor Fretheim, who had a draft reindeer for a time one winter).
Lars Mikkelsen of Sylen emigrated to America around 1871 [actually 1870] with his entire family. His sister Ingri [Mikkelsdatter] was married to Ole Eriksen [Langen] from Søndre Svukuriset. They [Ingri Eriksen] now moved to Sylen and allowed their daughter Berit and son-in-law Jørgen Jakobsen to take over Søndre Svukuriset, and they sold Søndre Svukuriest to Ole Torbersen* for the same price, NOK 1,000, before emigrating to Canada in 1885. [this would be about $135 Canadian at todays rate] * Ole Tobersen b 1856 was the grandson of Jon Olsen Langen [1768-1838] and a great-grandson of of Ole Eriksen Langen [ 1737-1807]

** homespun cloth ... the phrase in Norwegian was "tok mot stamping av vadmel" and the translation is a bit uncertain. What I presume this means is: Mikkel and Ingeborg had set up a larger "free standing loom" and were able to weave cloth from the spun wool from the sheep. The process would have been: shear the sheep, clean and dry the wool, spin the wool into vats and then use the loom to weave cloth etc. Likely some of the wool would have been dyed, to add a bit of color. The cloth would have various uses including cloths for cloths, bedding, blankets, and sown together and stuffed with wool for a type of "comforter". This page implies that they took in wool from others living in the area, or possibly, others used the larger "free standing loom". I would expect that most families had a small, maybe a table top looms for basics, but not many would have larger looms, and thus would use Mikkel and Ingeborg's loom or possibly Mikkel and Ingeborg would do the work in exchange for other items.

The Risbekk stream comes up from Bjørnberget near Gullsmedtjønna, so it is perhaps likely that the "haunting" originated from the legend of the goldsmith

Before the Supreme Court ruling of 1952, it was still unclear whether Sylen was a freehold property. Sylset is part of this and is therefore freehold property like Sylen. But when Ole Iver Sylen built there, he had to lease from the forestry department, just like his brother Johan at Ryvang, in order to receive new cultivation contributions, etc. The 3 brothers divided Sylen after the Supreme Court ruling with 1/3 each. Ole Iver was supposed to have somehow lost the right of inheritance to the old farm, which his half-brother Ole then took over. Through his mother Ingeborg, Ole Iver is from the old family in Sylen, while his half-siblings come from other families. He has been a skilled hunter, fisherman and trapper. As a shepherd boy, he went against and scared away wolves that wanted to take the sheep in broad daylight. He was disabled in his right arm by a shooting accident, but he made himself tools, e.g. a scythe, so he could hit well with the left-handled scythe. He had the King's Medal of Merit. Before he died in 1963, he had given up the farm to his son Kåre.

5. b. Engerdal, vol 2, pages 201-203 -- early history of Sylen farm
Gr.nr. 48/1 Sylen, formerly serial no. 200, is an old mountain farm in the far east of Femundsmarka. \emdash Before the Strømstad Agreement in 1751 and the resolution at the opening of the national border in 1757, the Swedes considered the areas here and westwards as far as Femund to belong to Sweden. In 1644, the priest Daniel Bochovius in Elfdalen with 200 dark-eared men had "conquered Särna, Heen and Idre, and taken hostages who, on behalf of the population, swore an oath of allegiance to Queen Christina, Gustaf Adolf's daughter. The Swedes claimed that these hamlets belonged to Herdal (Herjedalen), which had been ceded to Sweden by the Danish king at the Treaty of Bremsebro in 1645. (See above under Femund cabin).
After the Great Northern War 1700-1721, it was decided by a treaty between the kingdoms that a commission from both of them should go up and survey the border along its entire length, in order to avoid frictions about hunting and fishing etc. in the border areas. Now the question of Särna and Idre also came up, and there was great activity on both sides. (The matter will be discussed at the end of this volume [I haven't reviewed this further]) Carl von Linné, Sweden's since famous scientist, makes his great Dalaresa in 1734 up past Gravelsjøen and through Femundsmarka right up to Recos. He spends the night with his large flock at the north end of Gruvelsjøen, where Sylen was built about 30 years later. There was no farm here, without a cookhouse or fisherman's house and he praises the water that tastes like nothing else.
The border agreement in Stromstad in 1751 put the national border from Herjohngna in a straight line to Vonsjogusten. Thus, the northern end of Gravelsjøen [Grøvelsjøen] came with the outlet of Gruvla [this most likely means the point where lake Grøvelsjøen empties into the Grøvlan river on the Swedish side of the border] and left Rensjøen [about 40+ksm north of Røros over to the Norwegian side of the border.
It was here that Hans Jensen Syl from Herdal around 1766 built his mountain home. He was married this year to Ingeborg Eriksdatter from Langen, just south of Femunds Hytte [Langen nordre is just to the north of the northwestern arm of Lake Femund, and is about 30+kms in a north easterly direction to Røros] and is about 20 kms south of the Feragen district, cross country.

Note: there are a number of place names on these pages, but I have not searched thoroughly on a map. One of the main difficulties with finding place names or lakes or rivers, is the I have not been to locate an historical map of the area [1700 or 1800s] ... most of the maps I can find a 'more modern' and it seems that the places have changed names and/spellings on more 'modern maps'.

7. family records - family group sheet, Myrtle Elton, about 1979 - compiled by Mary Grue
- gives oldest child as, Inger (no other information); - Jens, the youngest with death year as 1856 - lists Mikkel Nilssen's death as 1869
note: some of my early information that my mom had received from Myrtle Elton as family group sheets and that my mom had compiled in 1979 [large turquoise scrapbook] had limited information ...... I had initially used this in my first attempts at genealogy back in the early 2000s. Since then I have researched more and have found many more resources, as indicated above [Rueben D Grue, 22 Dec 2024 ] 2113,2272,2273,2274
