Another name for Mikkel was Michel Michelsson.
Research Notes:
Summary;
I haven't found information to confirm Mikkel Mikkelson's birth or his family in the Røros parish records or the Bygebok for Engerdal. However the Røros Parish moving out record notes that he left Røros parish on 23 Jun 1852 travelling to Idre parish in Sweden. He went to an area just across the border. If Mikkel Mikkleson was living with his father, Mikkel Nilsen at Sylen, then it only about 10-15 along the lake Gravelsjøen into Sweden and at the southern end of the lake there are a number of farms, with Huskleppen about 5 kms from the southern end of the lake.
Birth: Mikkel's birth is uncertain. There are conflicting accounts of his birth. On page 206 of volume 2 of the Bygebok for Engerdal, records his birth as 1820. But on page 312 of the same book, Mikkel's birth is noted as 1821.
In the Røros parish register, 'confirmation' for the year 1839, Michel Michelsen is recorded as age 17 - a calculated birth in 1822. His residence is recorded as 'Syhl'. Michel's parents are noted as Michel Nielsen and Ingeborg Olsdatter. There is no other identifying information on this Ingeborg Olsdatter - is she the same person who was the mother of Gea Mikkelsdatter, b 1824 [see her page]?
We know that Mikkel Mikkelsen left the Femunds area for Idre parish in Sweden [just across the border]. In the Røros parish register 'moving-out' record, Mikkel is recorded as leaving on 23 Jun 1852, and this records his birth as 4 Jun 1821.
In reviewing the Swedish Church records, Michel Michelsson is recorded with a birth of 1826, throughout the Swedish household records volumes.
Over 3 or 4 occasions, I have reviewed the birth records in Røros parish from late 1819 to early 1828 [I have also reviewed births in Tolga, Rendal, and Trysil parishes]. But I have not found any record of birth for Mikkel/Michel.
Is it possible that Mikkel was not baptised?. It seems unlikely. However, it might be possible he was home baptized and that the actual record of his baptism was somehow not recorded by the parish priest or sexton. I don't have any explanation for this. It's possible that the page in the parish register was lost of misplaced and over time, his baptism was not noted. I should also point out that his brother Lars Mikkelsen's baptism also has not been found in the parish registers. [I have reviewed all the possible parish registers for Lars' baptism but haven't found it - Lars was born in 1830].
The only person named Mikkel in the all of the parishes is a record for the birth/baptism for a person named Mikkel [born 31 Dec 1822 and baptised on 6 Apr 1823], but the father is recorded as Jon Jonsen.
The most reasonable conclusion is that Michel was born sometime between 1820 and 1826, and this is what I'm recording on my Legacy database. The location of his birth is also uncertain, but the most likely is that he was born in Røros parish. The smelting hut at Femundshytte was closed 1821 or 1822, and it is not clear where Mikkel Nilsen went to [Mikkel Nilsen is the father of Michel/Mikkel Mikkelsen]. He may have stayed at Femundshytte or he may have gone to the area around Drevsjø where the new smelting house/complex was built. His brother Erik Nilsen had moved to this area, but it is not clear what year he moved.
Another interesting note is that Michel Michelsen's father Mikkel Nilsen who was born in 1797, had at least one relationship before he was married with Ingeborg Olsdatter, with the subsequent birth of Gjertrud Mikkelsdatter. Ingeborg Olsdatter was from Femundsenden, a farm area along the southern end of lake Femund. Femundsenden is about 10 kms north/east of Drevsjø, the location of a new smelter that built in the early 1820's and replaced Femundshytta. Many of the workers that lived at Femundsytta moved closer the area of the newer smelter. It is quite possible that Mikkel Nilsen and been at the Femundsenden/Drevsjø area in the early 1820s.
As I noted in Michel Michelsen's confirmation record of 1839, his parents are recorded as Mikkel Nilsen and Ingeborg Olsdatter. At some point before Sept 1830, Ingeborg and Gjertrud Mikkelsdatter moved to the farm Røsten in Tufsingdal. It was in Sep 1830 that Ingeborg Olsdatter married Rasmuss Amundsen - he was previously married and had 3 children with the youngest born in 1809. His first wife died in Apr 1828.
Had Ingeborg Olsdatter moved to Røsten before Rasmuss Amundsen's first wife died in 1828 to either work or to help with the care of his first wife? But is more likely that she moved to Røsten when she married Rasmus. Whenever Ingeborg did move to Røsten, Gjertrude Mikkelsdatter went with her. If Michel Michelsen's [b bet 1820 and 1826] mother was this same Ingeborg Olsdatter, we know that Michel did not go to the farm Røsten. Did he stay with his grandparents until Mikkel married in 1827 and then moved to the farm Sylen? This seems reasonable, but I have no proof or evidence that this happened. As of 7 Jul 2025 I have not recorded Mikkel/Michel Mikkelson/Michelsen mother as Ingeborg Olsdatter Femundsenden [born bet 1798 and 1800].
Sweden
We know that Michel Michelsen left Røros Parish on 23 Jun 1852 [see Røros parish 'moving out' records]. He was going to Idre parish, Sweden, possibly to Margaret Persdotter. We also know that he arrived in Idre parish but the actual date is not recorded. Irdre parish notes that he was going to the place or farm Løfåsen.
Michel Michelson first is recorded in the Idre parish records for the years 1850-1860. The Household examination book notes that he is married to Margrete Persdotter and that he has four children. This notes he arrived in the Idre parish in 1852 and that he was married on 27 Sep 1852.
I have reviewed the household examination volumes for the years starting in 1850 and the last volume that I reviewed was volume AIIa:1, 1990-1914 - see below. Michel Michelsson [Mikkel Mikkelsen] and Margrete Persdotter. Following the Idre parish household records, we have an outline of his family, children's birth and their marriages and children. See below the notes from the household records. Note that most of the Swedish records spell his name as Michel Michelsson.

. Both the Bygebok for Engerdal [vol 2 - see below] and John Midtdal's book, Tufsingdalen [see Nils Mikkelsen's page] note that he was a son of Mikkel Nilsen, b 1765, and that he lived in Huskleppen - see below. However, I have not found any other references.
The Bygebok for Engerdal suggests he was born at Sylen, but this would mean that his father had been in the area prior at that time. However, Mikkel Nilsen's daughter Gjertrud and Inger and son Lars [by family tradition] were all born in the vicinity of the Femunds smelting house.
