Summary

Joe Jacobsen, aka Joakim Perrson, was born in 1891 at Idre parish, Sweden. In Canada he used the name Joe Jacobsen which is the name that I am using and recording on Legacy. His mother was Elin Sophia Jacobsson/Jacobsen, b 1872, who was living with her parents at Grøvelsjøn. Joe's parents were not married. Joe's father was Per Michelson Huskleppen born 1859 at Idre. It's not clear how much involvement Joe had with his father, but they lived close together, less than 10 kms. Joe was my half 2nd cousin, twice removed. His great grandfather was Mikkel Nilsen, 1797-1869. Mikkel Nilsen was my 3rd great grandfather with my direct line through Lars Mikkelson b 1830.

Joe and his mother left Idre parish in 1905 and going to, America. Their designation is Dalton, MN, in Otter Tail Co. They were traveling with Elin Sofia's brother, Olaf Jacobsen, b 1869 and his family. Olaf or Ole Jacobsen is recorded in the 1905 MN State Census for Tumili Twp, Otter Tail Co. Joe's mother is recorded with her brother, but Joe is not. Joe would have been 14 years old in 1905 - he may have been working at some other farm [I have not reviewed all pages of this MN census].

The next record we have for Joe is the 1906 Canada Census for AB, SK, and MB. He is living with his uncle Ole Jacobsen and Ole's family on Ole's homestead. Joe's name is recorded as Joseph Pearson [I'm not sure about Joseph, but likely an Anglicization of Joakim; Pearson would also likely an Anglicization for Persson or a mis-spelling]. Ole Jacobsen had taken out his homestead entry on 14 Dec 1905 for the NW¼, Sec 16, Twp 42, Range 18, W4th. Joe's mother, Sophia Jacobsen had taken out a homestead entry on 24 Jan 1907, about 2 kms to the west of Ole - Sophia's homestead was along the valley of the Battle River. It is not clear when Sophia came to the area - she is not recorded with her brother Ole in the 1906 Canada Census, but in her homestead file she indicated that she lived with her brother.

A question remains on who the father was for Sophia's daughter, Elsie who was born in Aug 1907 - the 1911 Canada Census record's Elsie's birth and notes that she was born in Alberta. This would mean that she was in Alberta in early January 1906, but she is not recorded with her brother's family, but I haven't found her in the area [Strathcona district] in th 1906 Canada Census.

It appears that Joe lived with his uncle and mother, but he isn't recorded with her in the 1916 census. Note that his mother Sophia Jacobsen married in 1914 to Olaf Nordvie and she and her daughter Elsie lived with him. I haven't found any record of Joe in the 1916, 1921, 1926, or 1931 Canada Census. But according to a local history book, "50 years on the Coulee Rim", 1963, Joe worked with the Canada Natioan railroad [CNR] and later around 1920 at the railroad 'office' in the Donalda. He continued with this until he retired in 1956. He continued to live in Donalda. There is no suggestion from the information that I have reviewed that Joe was married or had children

Joe died in 1983. His mother died in 1950.

Note: many FTs on Ancestry record Thomas with a surname Westgard. As indicated I haven't found a birth/baptism record for him, but most likely he was the son of Ole Jacobsen, and was born outside of marriage - his mother is not known. One FT on Ancestry notes that he was born in Røros parish - the area in the southern part of lake Femund and around Drevsjø is very close to the area in Sweden where Ole lived. Thomas also had taken out a homestead entry the same date as his father, with Thomas' homestead on the NE¼ of Sec 16

Note: Joe Jacobsen, is not listed on AB Homestead index ... he would have turn 18 in 1909.
.. according the the HeRMIS map, SE¼ Sec 18 is likely in Battle River Valley with the western boundary east side of the river, and a portion of the quarter is on the eastern side of the river valley
.. google maps shows the east boundary of the SE¼ is along Range Road 184A and just to the north of Twp Rd 422 [Rge Rd 184A curves north-south and on the north end and south end of the curve, the Rge Rd is labeled as "185" - to the south about 2 kms on Rge Rd 185 is the town of Donalda]

note: Ole Jacobsen and Thomas Westgard on NW¼ and NE¼ of Sec 16 is about 2 kms to the east and north of Sophia's. Today, google maps doesn't show a road, but at Twp Rd 422 to the junction with Rge Rd 184 north another km or so is the NW¼ of sec 16 on the east
