Summary: Gjermund Gjermundsen Hammersgaard, b abt 1682, is my 7th great great uncle. He was also known as Gjermund Gjermundsen Higgeriset. He was a brother to my 7th great grandfather, Ole/Ola Gjermundsen Hammersgaard [1679-1756]. Gjermund would also have been an uncle to my 6th great grandfather, Otter Olsen Skaaret [1705-1768] - Otter is my direct line "Skaret" ancestor.
Gjermund Gjermundsen along with his brother Embret Gjermundsen left the Hammersgaard farm area and settled at what became known as Heggeriset, around or before 1714. Their half brother, Halvor Gjermundsen Hammersgaard, likely came to the Heggeriset a few years later, maybe 3-4. The brothers were likely familiar with area, since many people from the Øverbygda [Hammersgaard area] and Innbygda [Trysil area] had come to the northern end of lake Engeren for the whitefish that were plentiful, particularly in the autumn during spawning.
Heggeriset is about 30+kms to the north of Hammersgaard, and is located at the mouth of the river/creek known as Hundsbekken that according to the Bygebok for Engerdal [vol 1, page 84] flowed out at Sjølandet - I can't find this place name on OpenStreetMap or Googlemaps. It may be referring to a higher elevation or a mountainous area to the east and north of Heggeriset. Or possibly it is referring an earlier name of a larger lake labeled as Hundsjøen on OpenStreetMap. Using Google street view at Heggeriset, there is a small road called Heggerisgutua and following to the west the first place of the on the left of this is the farm, Lillestu - futher west is the farm Gjermunds and futher yet is the farm Vestues at the end of the road. The farms border Hundsbekken on the north and the farm Vestues borders the river Søndre Engeråa that flows south to lake Engeren, about 0.5 km. I have taken some screenshots of the farm areas using OpenStreetMap and Google - on MyPC, see Skaret folder - Hammersgaard - Heggeriset.
Using the Bygebok for Engerdal, both Gjermund and his brother Embret had left the Hammersgaard farm area before 1714. It is at this point that they had persmission to build. "It was the brothers Gjermund and Embret Gjermundsønner from Hammarsgarden in Trysil who settled here in 1714. Their building certificate states that one was an infantryman [grenader] and the other belonged to the skier patrol or corps [koret?] [page 84].
Both Gjermund and Embret, "built the first house with 2 rooms together. Gjermund lived at the western end and Embret at the eastern. Gjermund's farm was therefore called Vestugus [but later was spelled Vestues], while Embret's became Gjermund's after the second user there [Embret's son, Gjermund, took over the farm when Embret died in 1744]. Otherwise, both farms are called Heggeriset store, meaning large, in the land register, in contrast to a new farm Heggeriset lille - small, which was deeded in 1747, around the time that Halvor Gjermundsen died [but was initially settled by Gjermund and Embret's half - brother, Halvor Gjermundsen Hammersgaard].
Sometime in the 1740s both Heggeriset farms [Vestues and Gjermunds] were divided. Gjermund Gjermund's oldest daughter, Gertrude Gjermundsdatter was married in 1734 to Jons Jonsen from the farm Nes in Øverbygda. They obtained half of Vestues, and eventually builds a farm call Jons in Heggeriset. The other half was taken over by the son also named Gjermund Gjermundsen, 1731-1784.
The farm Gjermunds in Heggeriset [settled by Embret Gjermundsen] taken over by his sons, Gjermund Embretsen [b 1715] and Ole Embretsen [b 1717]. Ole Embretsen builds what was known as Opgards on his half of his father's farm.
Thus, the original Heggeriset farm, known as Heggeriset stor [large] is now 4 farms: Vestues, Jons, Gjermunds, and Opgards. And then there is Lillsetu or Heggeriset lille, initally settled by Halvor Gjermundsen Hammersgaard in the early 1720s or late 1710s.
