Research Notes:
Summary:
Johanna Olsdatter Narjord, b 1843, is my half-second cousin 3 times removed. Her mother's [Sigri Estensdtr Grue, 1795-1871] great grandfather was my 4th great-grandfather, Jon Simensen Grue, 1729-1807. Johanna's grandfather was Esten Jonsen Grue, Jon Simensen's oldest son. My family descends from Thore Jonsen Grue, a son of Jon Simensen Grue's second marriage.
In 1867 Johanna married in 1867 she married Mikkel Pedersen [Narjord; b 1825]. Mikkel had 2 previous relationships and had 2 children, Kari and Martin born outside of marriage. Johanna had a previous relationship and she had a daughter, Sigrud, born outside of marriage [Sigrud's father was Thore Thoresen Grue, 1829-1899, a brother to my 2nd great grandfather, Simen Thoresen Grue, 1823-1903].
On 15 Dec 1886, Mikkel and Johanna Olsdtr Narjord had a daughter, Kari Mikkelsdatter. In 1869, Mikkel and Johanna, along with their daughter Kari b 1866, Mikkel's son Martin Mikkelson Fåset b 1863, and Johanna's daughter Sigrud Thoresdatter, b 1863 left Togla parish for North America. It appears that for the most part, Mikkel Pedersen used the surname "Peterson" in the US.
Many Family Trees on Ancestry [FTs] have the wrong location for Mikkel Pedersen Narjord's birth, and subsequently record a number siblings that were not related to Mikkel and a number of children that were not the children of Mikkel and Johanna.
The 1900 US Census for Highland Twp, Winneshiek Co, Iowa, it is recorded that Johanna was the mother of 10 children with 5 living as of 1 Jun 1900. I have not been able to determine with a reasonable degree of confidence who were the children that had died prior to 1 Jun 1900. I do know that a daughter Sophia who was born in 1878 died in 1882. It is likely that Johanna and Mikkel's daughter Kari died between 1869 and 1885 and it is also likely that Johanna's daughter, Sigrud b 1863, also died between 1869 and 1885. The reason that I record this is that because I have not been able to find any US records for them.
The 5 children that were living at the time of the 1900 US Census were: Ole Mikkel Peterson, 1871-1963; Peter Mikkel Peterson, 1871-1917; Christine Peterson, 1875-1958; Anne Elisabeth Peterson, 1881-1934; and, Sophia Peterson, 1878-1908. Note that the 1910 US census also records that Johanna Olsdtr [b 1843] was the mother of 10 with 5 living. However, it is confirmed that Sophia Peterson died in 1908, meaning there should only be 4 children living. Is the 1900 census correct or is the 1910 census correct? Did the enumerator missed noting that there were 6 children living in the 1900 census? I don't think there is likely to be an answer to this conflict.
There is a record for the family arriving at Quebec, Canada on 31 May 1869 - see Canada Passenger Lists, 1865-1922. Mikkel and Johanna arrive along with Martin, Sigrud and Kari. With a reasonable degree of certainty, I believe that Mikkel's son Martin had died on 20 Jun 1869 and is buried at Waterloo Ridge Lutheran Cemetery, near Dorchester, Allamakee Co, Iowa [see findagrave]. Since I haven't found any US records for either Kari b 1867 or Sigrud b 1863, it is likely [but not proven] that they died on route from Quebec to Waterloo Twp, Allamakee Co. There is a possible exception - see point 5 below.
Mikkel and Johanna continued to live on the farm on Sec 14 in Highland Twp. They had a small farm [55 acres], but Mikkel was a skilled carpenter and furniture/cabinet maker and so is it possible that he supplemented some cash income from this type of work. Mikkel died in 1913 and buried at Waterloo Ridge Lutheran Church cemetery.
Johanna continued to live by herself on the family home and farm after Mikkel died for another 20 years. She died in 1933 and also buried at Waterloo Ridge Cemetery.

- Johanna born 1843 was married to Mikkel Persen Narjord and traveled to America
2. Sigrid Marie father is Thore Thoreson Grue, 1829-1899 ... Sigrid's father was a brother to my 2nd great-grandfather, Simen Thoreson Grue, 1823-1903 .... and so there is a double relationship - mother Johanne (Johanna) Olsdtr Narjord (born 22 July 1843) married on 28 July 1843 Mikkel Pedersen Narjord, born 22 March 1828 - Johanna and her husband Mikkel Pederson Narjord emigrated to US in 1869 .. 3. Findagrave id 66831526 posted by Cheryl Looker Moonen 21 June 2024 - parts of this post is NOT Correct: [1]. The photo posted is NOT Mikkel and Johanna Peterson [Narjord] - it is of someone else but I researched the names. [2]. The post records the wrong date of Mikkel and Johanna's marriage - correct date is 27 Dec 1867; [3] The post records that they buried a child in Norway. However, the Norway Parish records do not support this statement, since no child of theirs is born or buried before they left Norway in May of 1896; [4]. The post states that Kari and Sigri were twins, but there is no evidence of this.

4. Ancestry Family Trees [FTs]
SG FT; [sgbygdebok]; access 10 Jul 2024 https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/11224970/person/118766994/facts - notes Johanna's mother was Siri Estendatter Grue, 1795-1872 [she was the daughter of Esten Jonsen Grue, 1754-1797 the eldest son of Jon Simensen Grue, 1729-1807, my 4th great-grandfather] ... but note that this FT only records Siri, but none of her ancestors - records Johanna's marriage: 28 Jul 1867 .. see parish register ... Mikkel Pedersen Narjord, father Peder Jonsen Narjord - I am not sure of relationship, if any ... looking a vertical tree, it is not clear, but maybe a family connection through a marriage ????
... BUT this FT and most FTs have the wrong location for Mikkel Pedersen Narjord's birth ... his birth, 22 Mar 1828 at Tolga parish, Hedmark .. Parish register (official) no. 4, 1815-1836, p. 56, no 17 - his father Peder Johnsen at Narjord and mother ?? too difficult to read ... but mother was Kari Mikkelsdatter
- marriage: 28 Jul 1867 ... Norway Parish record ... location of either Mikkel or Johanna are not recorded
Also note: that the SG FT also includes the family of Martin / Mathais Petersen [Smeby] b 17 Nov 1857, Oppland Co, Norway - a number of photos of the family ..... - this Martin Peterson lived on Sec 27 of Highland Twp, Winnesheik Co [1905 plat map] [I had checked this Martin since his name was recorded on the plat along with Mikkel Peterson and post office of Spring Grove; but he is NOT the son of Mikkel] .....18 Jul 2024 ]
Another FT, Miller FT [Curtis_Miller90] ; access 11 Jul 2024 https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/7931141/person/-928531673/facts - the above FT has a lot of INCORRECT info, such as a son Peder A Pederson, 1870-1899 ... ... BUT this is NOT CORRECT - this Peder A Pederson is the son of Anders/Andrew Peterson, Mikkel Peterson Narjord's brother

Barn: a. Kari f. 1867" ... has a photo of Mikkel Perssen, Johanna and Kari - must have been taken in the US, since Kari is at least 15 or 16 or 17 yrs of age [about 1882 or 1883 or 1884]
above photo: As I have indicated I have not found any evidence in US records for Kari, b 1867. I wonder if the photo is labelled incorrectly and the daughter is actually, Sophia b 1884? The girl in the photo appears to be maybe 15-17 years old. If the girl is Kari, b 1867, then the photo would have been taken possibly 1882-1884. Johanna Olsdtr would then have been about 39-41 years old, and Mikkel would have been about 54-56 years old. From this photo, both Johanna and Mikkel appear to be about those ages. In order for the girl in the photo to be Sophia, the photo would then have been taken around 1899-1901. Johanna would then have been about 56-58 and Mikkel would have been about 71-73 years old. In this photo, Mikkel does not appear to be 71 years old. Mikkel died in 1913 at the age of 84; Johanna died in 1933 at the age of 89 [the age difference between Mikkel and Johanna was 15 years.
Thus, it seems likely that the photo was mistakenly labelled and that the daughter was actually Sophia rather than Kari. But what happened to Kari??? 1. she may have died between 1882-1884 and the date of the 1885 Iowa State census ... Kari is not recorded 2. she may have gone to work at some other farm or family 3. she may have married and lived somewhere else 4. she may have use a different given name

"This family emigrated to America in 1869, together with Johannes' daughter Sigrid Marie and with Mikkel's son: Martin Fåset, b 27 December 1863 which he [Mikkel Pedersen] had before with Marit Estensdtr Fåset"

Additionally, Mikkel's son from a previous relationship, Martin Mikkelsen Narjord, also left with Johanna and Mikkel.
The family arrived in Quebec, Canada on 31 May 1869. It appears that they then traveled to Allamakee County, Iowa and possbly stayed with relatives at Dorchester, and to the area known as Waterloo Ridge. It is likely that they arrived there by the middle of Jun 1869
