Research Notes:
Summary: [ May 2022]
Marit Erickson/Eriksdotter (b 1843) and Olof Jonsson Modig (b 1836) were not only husband and wife, but they were also 2nd cousins. Their shared ancestor was Erik Andersson (1786-1826) and Marit Andersdotter (1747-1838). Erik Andersson's direct ancestors lead to one of the early settlers at the farm Fäbacken that was initially settled around 1650. His ancestor originally came from Sweden and was known with the Finnish Family Name of "Porkka". Erik Andersson (b 1786) was my 2nd cousin, 8 times removed. My direct connection to the Porkka family is through my grandmother, Avey Rangborg Skaret (b 1890 in Sweden).
Marit Erickson was b 1843 in Östmark parish. Her first marriage was on 16 Jan 1863 at Lekvattnet parish to Olof Jönsson. Olof and Marit had one daughter, Inga Christina born on 15 Nov 1863 at the Fäbacken farm in Lekvattnet parish.
On 23 Apr 1865, Olof, Marit and Inga Christina left Lekvattnet parish for North America. It is most likely that they arrived in Jun 1865 to Carver Co, Minnesota. And they most likely went to the farm of his sister, Kjerstin / Christine Jonsdotter who was married to Nils Larsson Mattson.
Many of Olof's brothers/sisters had previously emigrated from the Lekvattnet parish. His brother Erik J Modig emigrated on 19 Jan 1863. Erik was married in Östmark to Gertrud Jönsdotter, born in 1800. Gertrud was my 1st cousin, 5 times removed - her ancestors were some of the early settlers on Arnsjön. Her ancestors lead to one of the early settlers at the farm Arnsjön around 1650. Her ancestors initially had come to Värmland, Sweden from Finland. The Finnish Family name was "Hotakka". My connection is through my grandmother, Avey Rangborg Skaret, born in 1890, in Sweden.
Another of Olof's brothers was Johan J Modig emigrated in 4 May 1863 and lived in Stockholm Twp, Wright Co, MN. He was married in Wright Co, MN to Marit Bollman, born in 1845 at Östmark. Marit was my 2nd cousion, 3 times removed. Her ancestors leads to my 4th great grandfather, Sven Nilsson (1746-1855). Again my connection is through my grandmother, Avey Rangborg Skaret, born in 1890, in Sweden.
Olof's sister, Kajsa Jonsdotter (b 1829) emigrated on 15 Apr 1864 and lived in Stockholm Twp. She was married to Jöns Erickson (1834-1912). Kajsa and Jöns were 1st cousins, once removed. Their common was Erik Andersson (b 1786), and in Sweden was known to have descended with the Finnish Family Name, "Porkka". And again my connection is through my grandmother, Avey Rangborg Skaret, born in 1890, in Sweden.
One other of Olof's brothers was Jöns Jonsson Modig, born in 1833. Jöns was first married in 1855 to Britta Eriksdotter, b 1835 in Östmark. Jöns and Britta were 3rd cousins with the common ancestor, Anders Eriksson (1720-1794. Anders was also known with the Finnish Family Name, "Porkka". Jöns and Britta emigrated on 12 Sep 1867 Britta died in 1868 in Wright Co, MN. After her death, Jöns Modig married in 1873 to Britta's younger sister, Helga b in 1743. Again my connection is through my grandmother, Avey Rangborg Skaret, born in 1890, in Sweden.
In the US, Olof used the surname of Modig. He most likely first went to Watertown Township in Carver County and likely to the farm of his sister Kjerstin (in the US records her name is usually recorded as Christine). Kjerstin was married to Nils Larsson Mattson.
Most other researchers note that Olof Modig died the "first winter in MN" and so his death would have been during the winter of 1865-1866. It is most reasonable his death location was in Carver Co. However, it is possible that his death occurred in Morrison County, MN. As previously indicated
After he died, his wife Marit/Mary used the surname Modig. She remarried at Watertown, Carver Co, MN on 25 Feb 1869 to Mads Peter Hansen. Mads was born in Denmark. Mads Hansen and Mary Modig homesteaded in Two Rivers Township, Morrison Co, MN and are recorded living there in the 1870 US Federal Census.

re: Olaf Jansson (Modig) Moody, b 7 Apr 1836, Värmland, died 1865 at Elmdale Twp, Morrison Co, MN [abt 100 kms north of Cokato] but also records an alternate place of death in Carver Co - But no sources - has the right father and records the right marriage date to Marit Ersdotter, so most likely he died at Carver Co
records: Marit "Mary" Eriksdotter Erickson Jensen, b 16 Mar 1843 at Fäbacken [records the right parents] her second marriage in 1869 at Elm Dale, Morrison Co, [references another FT, Francisco File.RTW - which must be a personally held GED) to Mads Peter Larsen [but also references 1900 Census that says they were married 21 year and thus 1879] and records 5 children with birth/death; and, one unknown child
BUT there seems to be conflicting information
Also: on FamilySearch 9FMN-6PG - Olaf Modig - but records he died 1865 in Elmdale, Morrison Co, MN [but this is not certain] KFR2-2QX - Marith Erickson - but records she was born in Ingeborg, Uppsala, Sweden in Mar 1843 and died 16 Feb 1906 at Fairfield, Spokane Co, WA ???? - 2 people have entered data: most by Robert L Mallory in 2014 and he references "Larsen family history"; and, Dorothy Jean Leo in May 2018 BUT again more "orginal data" is not noted.
